Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has said he will take his time before he appoints the new Newcastle captain.
Alan Pardew – will take him time over choosing new captain
And that’s a good policy, because there are one or two decent candidates like Stephen Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini and Joey Barton – who finished one, two and three in our recent poll for the Newcastle captaincy with 36%, 31% and 20% respectively.
One thing with Stephen is that he must secure his first team place and Mike Williamson, a terrific £1M signing from Portsmouth just 18 months ago, kept him out for most of this year, before Mike sustained his broken arm in training.
The thing with Joe Barton (and even Fabricio to a lesser extent) is that he may not even still be at Newcastle come September.
This is what Alan told the club’s official website today :
“I have ideas, but I will probably pick it with a week to go.” “We will see how pre-season unfolds and see how the squad assembles itself, how it looks and what shape it is in.”
“I will then take a view from there because it is an important role, and possibly a few players could wear the armband during the pre-season friendlies.”
Kevin Nolan has of course left the club so Alan will need to pick his new captain, and the only real surprise would be if he chooses Joey Barton, and he gets on very well with the Liverpudlian.
Goalkeeper Steve Harper has captained the side in the past, but the36 year-old veteran will have a fight on his hands (so to speak) with both Tim Krul and Fraser Forster, to keep his place this summer.
Maybe Fabricio or Stephen would be the best choices, and we’d be happy with either of those two, and we wouldn’t mind Joey Barton getting the job either, in his last season, but that would be a surprise choice.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #41Enrique if he stays. If not then Coloccini or maybe even Cabaye. Barton is a good shout if he can keep his mouth shut long enough.
Definitely not Taylor, too immature and not good enough to be starting.

I’d definitely take Dann, I think he’s quality but apparently they want £14m for him! I also think Roger Johnson and Ben Foster would improve us.

Just watched a film called One Night in Turin. A 2011 documentary on England’s Italia 90 World Cup experience. Great Film!
Covers everything from in-game highlights, UK media coverage, UK political scene, and had a huge focus on the Geordie contingent of Gazza, Waddle, Sir Bobby, and Beardo to a lesser extent. Great memories and really reminded me of how important that was for me personally (I was 10 and it started my obsession with football) and how unfairly treated the media was to Sir Bobby. They should be ashamed looking back.
Roll on the good times when we have 3 geordie startes on the England team…wait maybe Carrick, Carrol, and Johnson count. Doesnt feel the same 🙁

Comment #57Barton is probably the only one with a big enough mouth to do the job properly and he has balls and a lot of fight in him to win games and that rubs off on the team as it did with Nolan and the others mentioned don`t really have that on the field.
If he goes or not i am not so sure who should get it.

Comment #59Marty-Toon the only problem with Barton was everytime I saw him last season wear the armband he looked a little out of his depth, his normal energy seemed focused elsewhere.

Comment #61I’d say Barton all the way if he stays. He has shown dedication to this team (even threatening the bosman ruling).
Yes his twatter account gets him into trouble, but thats what we need. It shows he is a leader not a follower and one to speak his mind. He definitely mellowed out this season and even showed some real professionalism, especially when he was stepping in for Nolan.
Fact is, Barton is International standard in my opinion and together with Nolan was the heart and soul of the team last season. Give him his chance and he will shine I reckon. Only problem is, where does he fit into the team.
On another ridiculous note. I wish Pardew and the staff would really put the heat on Ameobi. I really want him to step up…finally. Maybe he will next season knowing he has some competition.

My source told me that sturridge is signing for 16m to so we must have the same source. He also said mike ashley will be playing left wing next year wearing a long black wig and a sweaty spiderman mask down his pants. He said thats why enrique hasnt signed yet because he wants to see how good he is. Dont know if our source is full of shit though planb!

Comment #66Out of the 8 games we played without Nolan as captain we won none of them. When Barton was captain he seemed to interested in contesting every single decision with the ref instead of just getting on with his game. Don’t think the owner would be v happy to see someone publically slating him to become captain either so there is v little chance of Barton being captain

Cabaye for Captain! world class player, saw him live in lille´s last game for the season. he will be our new gary speed
————-
Good shout, mate. He’d be my choice too. Not just a world class player, but a model professional who’s got the right attitude and good leadership skills too (I believe he was captain of the French U 21 side and also vice captain of his club side?).
It’s probably a bit too soon to give him the captaincy straight away, so I’d expect him to be appointed vice captain at the start of the season, but I think it’s only a matter of time before he takes over the captain’s role.
