Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has said he will take his time before he appoints the new Newcastle captain.
Alan Pardew – will take him time over choosing new captain
And that’s a good policy, because there are one or two decent candidates like Stephen Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini and Joey Barton – who finished one, two and three in our recent poll for the Newcastle captaincy with 36%, 31% and 20% respectively.
One thing with Stephen is that he must secure his first team place and Mike Williamson, a terrific £1M signing from Portsmouth just 18 months ago, kept him out for most of this year, before Mike sustained his broken arm in training.
The thing with Joe Barton (and even Fabricio to a lesser extent) is that he may not even still be at Newcastle come September.
This is what Alan told the club’s official website today :
“I have ideas, but I will probably pick it with a week to go.” “We will see how pre-season unfolds and see how the squad assembles itself, how it looks and what shape it is in.”
“I will then take a view from there because it is an important role, and possibly a few players could wear the armband during the pre-season friendlies.”
Kevin Nolan has of course left the club so Alan will need to pick his new captain, and the only real surprise would be if he chooses Joey Barton, and he gets on very well with the Liverpudlian.
Goalkeeper Steve Harper has captained the side in the past, but the36 year-old veteran will have a fight on his hands (so to speak) with both Tim Krul and Fraser Forster, to keep his place this summer.
Maybe Fabricio or Stephen would be the best choices, and we’d be happy with either of those two, and we wouldn’t mind Joey Barton getting the job either, in his last season, but that would be a surprise choice.
What do you think?

Comment #81Cabaye can’t speak English. You can’t give the captains armband to someone who doesn’t speak the language

Comment #82Do we suppose to expect anymore signing today? I’m very impatient for any more news, I know all of you are very eager. Sincerely I don’t have big hope on Bashley but I am sure one day the club will fly high. I think all fans must be feeling like this. I don’t care for the unwashed or livercock. i’m interesteds only in NUFC

Comment #83Lads, was in town earlier and saw Danny Sturridge comin out of Poundland. Apparently Mikey and Del had ran out of paper to print out his contract and nobody had a pen to hand so he had to nip out and get some stationary.
It’s okay, he said that it’s just a case of waiting for the Dot Matrix printer they have at SJP printing out the contract and he’ll be a Toon player!

Oh, is that right? I thought I read somewhere that he was quite fluent in English. Oh well, never mind, at least his French is pretty good 😉

Comment #93@Jack Yes, I agree, which is why I thought that it would be more likely that Cabaye would be offered the vice captaincy instead

Did Cabaye ever captain Lille???
————
No, I think he was vice captain:
“Vice captain Yohan Cabaye has been the subject of speculation from Bayern Munich and Arsenal, among others. He has been a main cog in the Lille midfield who has helped to keep the scoring machine running.
His nine assists and two goals don’t fully represent his value in the team. The French international is a glue-type player, doing all the little things to go along with setting the table and providing another attack option from the midfield. His leadership will be hard to replace if he moves on this summer.”

Comment #97Enjoyed reading a lot of the posts above and one or two of the links were good (e.g Boro applicant for vacant manager position with FM 2005 experience).
Also, I wish you all the luck in the world Ed, you do some cracking articles but also provide a great place to read the bizarre rantings of others. Further, I was pleased to see you give your lad a crack, always something he can ad to his CV. Not really interested in the other try hard blogs, they try but I find them really boring.
