If anybody was going to get the number 9 shirt at Newcastle this season, we would have thought it could have been Demba Ba.
Daniel Sturridge – is this lad a contender for number 9 shirt?
But the number 9 shirt was never mentioned to the Senegal striker, when he signed on two weeks ago today, and he took his lucky number – 19.
So if there are to be contenders to wear the number 9 shirt next season, you have to think that there could be a couple of decent strikers still to come in this summer – that seems fairly logical.
This is what Alan Pardew said today about the number 9 shirt, to the local Newcastle press:
The number nine shirt is equally important. I will leave the number nine as late as I can.”
“I know just what that shirt means to this football club, but there will be a few contenders who could wear that shirt and do it justice.”
“It is an important shirt and I might think of giving it to a player who doesn’t get weighed down by it. I will have to assess the characters of the players to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
If nobody comes in that deserves the shirt, then it should not be given to anybody.
But don’t you think young Daniel Sturridge could wear that shirt with some pride and distinction?
In our active poll on whether Newcastle should go after Daniel Sturridge at around £10M, a huge 95% of readers think Newcastle should do just that.
Wonder if Alan Pardew ever reads this blog?
😀

Comment #13One thing’s for certain there’s no one at the club at the moment worthy of wearing the famous shirt. My hope is that in a few years time someone like Airey is good enough to wear it.

Comment #14Am tired of seeing Sturridge’s name on here. He had a lovely 12 games for Bolton….but it was only 12 games and the kid has a huge attitude.
He is at Chelsea FC so we will be a rather large step down to him…really think he wants to come to us? Anyone? If he comes to us and does well next summer he will be flashing his backside to any top 6 side he can. Liverpool Spurs Arsenal and Man Utd.
Am not saying I wouldnt be happy if we signed him tomorrow dont get me wrong but he isnt Gods gift

Shola should get captaincy and no. 9, Its just the sort of motivation he needs to start playing. Then the joke will be on every other football supporter we have told he is our next big thing.
Failing that let tell him we will give him it if he scores 10 goals this season

Comment #16Mike Ashley spent 10 million on Coloccini and that was long before we sold AC. So thats nonsenes that he won’t spend that amount on a single player.

Comment #18If one of our strikers scores 20+ goals this season, then they may have earned the number 9 shirt. Unless we bring in a top class striker who gets it because of their previous goal scoring prowess like Shearer did.

Comment #19Sign Sturridge, even if the asking price is up to £20 million. He is going to be one for the future. I mean look at how many goals he scored for Bolton.

Comment #20If Henderson is worth 18mil, Carrol 35mil, does anyone really think we could get Sturridge at a price MA would be prepared to pay.

If, and its a big IF, he were to come to us I think we could be close enough to the top 6 in the league not to have him wanting to get away from us, but then again I’ve always been a dreamer

Comment #23Agreed, leave it as an incentive to all the strikers and the one who scores the most gets the number 9 (if it’s more than 15 league goals?)

Haha mate I love a dreamer but I cant see that happening. The lad loves his money (take a deeks at why he is at Chelsea now and not Man City) and we wont pay what any of the teams I mentioned pay. IF we get him he will either flop/be average and stay with us or he will be good and jump ship. He will drop a transfer request like no ones business if the money was right somewhere else

Comment #32Sometimes I wonder about some of you on here..
Sturridge is not over-rated at all, and is probably the only English player currently who is worth his valuation. You saw what he did to us, and he was class at Bolton and has scored for Chelsea in the Champions league.
I wonder if sometimes people actually watch football or just voice opinions on it.

Comment #33Chelsea’s new manager had two 30+ strikers, 1 50mil striker who’s form is questionable to say the least and a young English striker who had a great 6 month loan spell where he scored regularly in what is an average Bolton team.
Can anyone see him allowing Sturridge to move before he get the chance to work with the lad???
MA is a great businessman but even the head of the Russian Mafia would not take 12-15mil for the lad.

Comment #34I wish Pardieu would shut up with his flappy gob. He know’s nothing. He talks crap and is made to look a fool time and time again.
I want to hear from Ashley or Llamearse about what plans they have. Do they intend to bring in a striker or two?

Agree with you to a certain point. He is at Chelsea and we are not Chelsea. But he knows that none of the top 6 would have him as first choice. What he wants is consistent play. Yeah he would be using us as a “stepping stone” but thats just the game these days.
Looks at the teams interested? Bolton, Stoke, West Brom
I know who i’d go to over them. Our biggest competition were we to go into it would be Bolton because he’s been there already.
And say we spend £15mil on him and he does well and wants to fuck off next season to a bigger team, he will have had more premiership experience than Carroll had and we could easily sell him for more than he was bought (especially if we only got him at the beginning of the season).
I’m sure Pardew will be watching him and playing it by ear. You can tell that we are avoiding bidding wars as much as possible.
