The Newcastle United squad return to pre-season training today.
Jose Enrique – still on his way?
And the news is that manager Alan Pardew will hold showdown talks with Jose Enrique over his long-term future on Tyneside.
Now when have we heard that one before?
The news for the last couple of months has been that Newcastle have offered Jose a bumper five year contract, but Jose and his representatives have been avoiding discussing it with Newcastle.
Hey, if Jose wants to move on he should leave, and Newcastle should sell him this summer – it’s as simple as that.
Enrique first said he would have contract negotiations with Newcastle, once the club were safe in the Premier League, but then didn’t do that and has refused to say if he wants to go or if he wants to stay at Newcastle.
Enrique just yesterday was linked with a move to Liverpool or Arsenal, and the news was that Liverpool may try to buy him this week to fend off possible interest from the London club, after they agreed to sell Gail Clichy to Manchester City for £7M.
It seems that Jose wants to play European Champions League football, and his ambition is to make the full Spanish side, and he thinks he can do that with a club with a higher European profile than Newcastle have right now.
And it seems the news yesterday in the Sunday Mirror that Wayne Bridge would be coming for a season long loan seems not to be true.
That’s a pity because it even made some sense for Newcastle to bring Wayne in as a one year replacement for Jose, and then Shane Ferguson (or Neil Taylor if we can get him in from Swansea) could have taken over next summer.
It would have given the two youngsters a year to mature and become better players, before one of them became the first choice left back at Newcastle .
Oh well – you win some you lose some.
