The Daily Mail is reporting today that Alan Pardew wants Real Madrid’s 20 year-old Sergio Canales.
Sergio Canales – 20 year-old Real Madrid midfielder
The attacking midfielder was bought by Real Madrid last summer from Sergio’s home town club Racing Santander.
At that time Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal were also said to be interested in signing the young prospect, but the lad has failed to make a big impact at Madrid.
The player cost Real Madrid €6M (£5.3M) plus some add-on payments, depending how successful he becomes at Madrid.
Canales is now available for a season long loan deal, but at least two other clubs in England, Aston Villa and Everton are said to be interested, as are QPR, who will need to strengthen their side with quite a few new players, if they are to stay in England’s top league.
Sergio played 39 times with 7 goals for Racing Santandar, and played 15 times for Real Madrid last season, and has played for all the Spanish Youth sides at U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 level.
In total he has played a total of 29 times for the Spanish Youth sides with 7 goals.
On the Wikipedia site for him today – this is what has been added for him:
On 4 July 2011, Canales signed a Five year contract with Newcastle United for a fee believed to be around £12m. Sergio said in an interview that he wanted to play for a big team in the EPL and to win trophies!
Don’t get too excited because this is 99% certain to be a prank, since almost anybody can enter stuff on Wikipedia, until it’s seen – and then deleted.
Do you think it could be a Sunderland fan? How many years ago did we last win a trophy – oh yes 42 years.
Comments welcome.

But i have to agree with newcastle knight,Canales is too similar in style to Vuckic,i’d rather we gave Haris a chance this season

Comment #10All i know about Canales is, before he joined Real Madrid he was taking the spanish league by storm for her previous club. Scored some outstanding goals in the la liga at the age of 18. Seen him play a couple of times and a great passer of the ball. Good dribbler and can score the odd goal.
But since then i don’t know anything about him in Real Madrid shirt i’m afraid. Will he adapt to English football? I don’t know. Just know that he’s a player of great potential. Hope we don’t sign him, unless he’s going to join us permanently. With Nuri Sahin there, there’s plenty of competition there. Hope he signs for us in a permanent deal!!!

Comment #12wouldnt be a bad loan, wondering though if this happens will it be part of a plan to make sure jose stays? adding a spanish winger to play in front of him make him feel a bit more at home, i know jonas is spanish speaking to but to have a proper spaniard might persuade jose to stay perhaps

Comment #13Canales is quality. He is a young, skillful, technical playmaker who would be a fantastic addition to our side were he able to adapt to the physical nature of English football. BUT, this sounds like total nonsense. I read the Spanish papers every day (Marca, AS) which are Madrid biased, and not a word of this has been mentioned there to my knowledge.

I share your concerns about physicality;
“Canales is quality. He is a young, skillful, technical playmaker ” – he won’t be once Nigel De Jong has finished with him.

Comment #23ganiyu – yes, if there is no initial interest. Canales is wonderful, but we have Cabaye and Ben Arfa for creating through the middle.

This list is slightly out of date now (doesn’t include Joey’s account) but it’s a good place to start:

Comment #29Vuckic is also untested, but I think Canales is further along. If we got this lad on loan (which I appreciate is unlikely) it would make sense to get Vuckic into a championships side who would give him regular first team action. If not, maybe it’s time to start getting Vuckic off the bench a bit more regularly.

Comment #30Sound thinking, chasing all these class midfielders.
We will need to create about 30 goal opportunities a game to score the occasional goal with the strikers we have.
Oh yes, and if you see a No. 9 next season, it’s the No. 6 fallen a**e over tit.
All toonincheek, of course.

Comment #33This is the best news I’ve heard in ages, really hope this is true! I’ve seen Sergio play a few times, and watched him train on several occasions and I’ve been boring my m8s to death with tales of how good this kid is, I honestly believe he’s one of the best young players around, sign him up asap!

Comment #34I don’t see this happening as he was BIG news not so long ago. Most Spanish players prefer to move to another Spanish team or to Italy. The odd few make the longer trip to the EPL. If he does go to Newcastle it would be a fantastic coup.
