Alan Pardew has said that owner Mike Ashley is spending big time to build Newcastle United into a good side again.
Mike Ashley – the Newcastle owner
Last night Alan Pardew tried to reassure Newcastle fans that the massive £35M that was raised from selling Andy Carroll to Liverpool in January, is being used to build up the side.
But those seem a little bit like empty words, at least at the moment, as with four players brought in, the Newcastle fans are not daft, and know the net spending of Newcastle this season is currently at zero.
Kevin Nolan brought in around £4.5M on his move to West Ham, and Newcastle paid a £4.5M release clause in Yohan Cabaye’s contract at Lille, and Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux and Mehdi Abeid were all free agents and cost nothing in transfer fees.
Pardew has also surprisingly said that Kevin Nolan was sold to West Ham because he didn’t want to stay at Newcastle, which will come as a surprise to many Newcastle fans, after Kevin had often talked in glowing terms about Newcastle and their fans – and he elected to join a second division side? Strange indeed.
Of course the little bit of magic is that Alan Pardew said the £35M would also be used to pay the wages of new players – and we estimate that the new recruits have around £22M in wages over the length of their contracts.
But there again Sol Campbell, Shefki Kuqi and Kevin Nolan have gone and they had cumulative wages of around £100K/week at Newcastle this year.
This is what the Newcastle manager said last night:
“But Mike and Derek’s backing has been excellent. I have to say that. And the noises on the last two planned arrivals are also positive.”
“I know where that Carroll money goes, I assure you. It will be invested in the club. So far, the button is being pressed and I can’t ask for more than that.”
“We have done more business than anyone else.” “If you add up the money and think we have not spent the £35m, you will be way off. I have to mark the cards of the fans on that.”
That’s potentially good news on the two possible arrivals, so let’s hope he is talking about Mevlut Erdinc and Charles N’Zogbia, because if Newcastle can get those two through the door, things will certainly be looking up.
It’s going to be very difficult, as we have said before, to know just how much of the £35M will be reinvested – but it hardly looks like it’s much at the moment, but of course there are still almost two months to go in the transfer market.
We continue to live in hope.
What do you think?

Comment #42to all of you who has doubts about the foreigners … let me tell you that they are much better players than english players .. they are ahead by a mile … you need english players when you are playing against scumderland .. i can tell you for sure that hatem ben arfa and ba and marveux and abeid are much better players than what we’ve had over the last 5 or 6 years ….. and i forgot cabaye ….
Would you rather spend 12 mill on wickham, and then spend more on gardner, larsson, don chin wang, almuhammadi, and then get brown gibson and oshea … we’ve bought more quality in our team .. and for much much less

You have to be a mackem, case no true Newcastle fan would speak of the club as you do.
You are the kind of person that bring things down rather to build them up.
I hope you get blocked from coming on here cause your comments are way out of line.
You know NOTHING about what truly goes on behind the scenes at NUFC.
I bet you are the kind of person that backs people like freddy sheppard. Who buys injury prone players for 18£ mill, they play 9 times a year, and gets paid 100.000 a week.
Now shut up with your negativity and wait until the end of the transfer window.
We have brought in 2 internationals, one on the brink and upcoming youth. Thats an improvement u twat.

Comment #44I don’t care if we spend the £35 million completely on this or that.
The team looks much better than last season with the 4 new players already signed.
Add to the frame that Pardew has already stated we’ll be getting 2 more in, then that’s 6 new players into a team that is already half decent….
Wonderful.
Some of you lot just don’t know when you have it decent.

Comment #46come on lads lets have some sense here!
are we bringing in quality players, yes!
are we buying good and early so they can get settled in. yes
is the squad looking better than last season. yes
given the new buys was Nolan going to be in the 1st eleven. probably no. and in 4 years time he will be even slower.
will we be making more signings. probably yes
so why all this negativity, talk of liars, keegan this keegan that, and as for the £35 million not being spent , where is this realy relevant, if we are a better side and continue to improve it doesn’t matter where the money goes as long as it stays in the club somewhere, even if MA takes it out it comes off the debt.
some of you realy need tothink before you post.
mike ashley cant spend £35 million of the clubs money in casinos there is still law in the land and the cash belongs to the club!!! if he takes it of the debt then he can do whatever he wants with it similar to what we do with our own cash!
final point would any one even now not take £35 million for Carroll?

Comment #47Strange how so many fans on here think Pardew is a liar, puppet, Bshitter, spin merchant, cr%p manager … and yet player after player has said they really like working with him.
So … either the players, the professionals, who work with him every training day and on match days have got it wrong … or the know it all bigoted fans on here have got it wrong.
I think the answer is a no brainer.

Comment #48Well put davvrus m8. Let the facts speak for themselves. We’ve had a brill close season so far with good quality signings with more on the way.
But all the kids want to do is moan, moan, moan. Ashley is having his best transfer window yet so it’s about time his critics put up and shut up cos they’re turning this blog into a right MoanFest.

Comment #50all u lot do is moan ffs! weve signed four quality players with another poss 2-3 still to come in, weve upgraded and improved our training facilitys WHICH DESPERATLY NEEDED DOIN how much have valuable players being injured in training cost us in the past? not just money but league positions? and of course nolan wanted to leave why would they offer a 5 yr contract he would be the next alan smith in 2 yrs!

Comment #51I think that something has been misinterpreted here. Pardew and the hierarchy thought that Nolan didn’t have another 5 years at the top as did some supporters. So, when they wouldn’t offer him that length of contract he decided to leave. He didn’t have to as he still had 2 years to run but he did. Why is the insinuation always that Pardew is lying or that he is forcing someone out? Footballers are very quick to enforce the terms of a contract but the clubs are always under pressure to give in to their demands. And we’ve brought in four highly regarded players that have cost us nothing so far and according to some that’s not good business! The window is open and there’s still money there but some will not be happy unitil it is all blown on some big-name star who doesn’t really want to come to us but wants to get a foot-hold in the PL! Do we want another Michael Owen?

Comment #52we were promised the £35mil would be spent on the SQUAD this has now changed to the CLUB, as for people saying what about other wages off the books or money re-couped from Nolan tv money etc realistically without the Carroll sale our funds available would have been well over £35mil after sales of Nolan and probably Enrique so when Ashley promised us the Carroll money he did so to reduce how much he would give so of the £35mil promised with the 2 bids already in place it will be gone and those two bids are not collossal. as for N’zogbia And Erdinc very unlikely Pardew said 1 offensive addition which leaves the other likely to be defensive i.e. Erdinc and Taylor any players sold may have their transfer fees reinvested in the squad if Pardew bangs the door hard enough i was never adamant that the £35mil should be completely invested over this summer i would have preferred £25mil then another £10mil emergency fund in January however the principle of lying to us fans is not very good really. but there we go i guess if it gives us longevity and stability then fine but i feel we need more than 2 more players as its evident we are not going to be using smith perch etc one really good thing is we can see some of the kids getting a chance cause i reckon Fergie will eventually be better than N’Zog (i hope so)

Comment #53I don’t care how much we spend on transfer fees as long as we get the right amount and quality of players in. However the whole ‘wages come out of the £35m’ thing is bollocks. What if we hadnt of sold Carroll? would we have not bought anybody and not paid anybodies wages? NO. The club has a wage budget, we lost Carroll, Nolan, Campbell, Kuqi and even Ireland off that wage bill, which will probably be somewhere in the region of £150k/week, and the players coming in will amount to much less than that, so how on earth do there wages need to come out of the £35m when the wages freed up by the leaving of those others will more than cover it.

Comment #55I’m glad we got rid of a trouble maker like Andy Carroll and brought in three talented players. I don’t think it matters how much of the 35 million is spent as long as we bring in decent lads like Cabaye, Ba and Marveaux. I think Pardew made a good point when he said “We have done more business than anyone else.” I’m sick of people who come on this site and start bashing Ashley and Pardew without giving them a chance of a full transfer window. We cannot compete with the likes of Chelsea, Man U, Man City and Arsenal so we have to be realistic with the types of players we can attract. Good job so far Pardew.

Comment #57Theres a few things I dont understand here.
We are acquiring (decent) plyers for free, and people are complaining that we should be throwing cash around like a headcase. Good sense really as long as the squad is strengthened. However, when the window closes, and we can see that we are no further forward except we have a smaller wage bill………
And another thing. How come when you open a tin of evapourated milk, its still there?

Comment #60And another point, how many people have been on hear not that long ago castigating Nolan for being fat and slow? however, the minute he is sold suddenly he is the best thing since Gregg’s Cheese and Onion Pasties. Ed , you like your polls . how about a poll to see how many people think Nolan would actually be a1st team regular next season if he hadn’t been sold.
