Alan Pardew has said that owner Mike Ashley is spending big time to build Newcastle United into a good side again.
Mike Ashley – the Newcastle owner
Last night Alan Pardew tried to reassure Newcastle fans that the massive £35M that was raised from selling Andy Carroll to Liverpool in January, is being used to build up the side.
But those seem a little bit like empty words, at least at the moment, as with four players brought in, the Newcastle fans are not daft, and know the net spending of Newcastle this season is currently at zero.
Kevin Nolan brought in around £4.5M on his move to West Ham, and Newcastle paid a £4.5M release clause in Yohan Cabaye’s contract at Lille, and Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux and Mehdi Abeid were all free agents and cost nothing in transfer fees.
Pardew has also surprisingly said that Kevin Nolan was sold to West Ham because he didn’t want to stay at Newcastle, which will come as a surprise to many Newcastle fans, after Kevin had often talked in glowing terms about Newcastle and their fans – and he elected to join a second division side? Strange indeed.
Of course the little bit of magic is that Alan Pardew said the £35M would also be used to pay the wages of new players – and we estimate that the new recruits have around £22M in wages over the length of their contracts.
But there again Sol Campbell, Shefki Kuqi and Kevin Nolan have gone and they had cumulative wages of around £100K/week at Newcastle this year.
This is what the Newcastle manager said last night:
“But Mike and Derek’s backing has been excellent. I have to say that. And the noises on the last two planned arrivals are also positive.”
“I know where that Carroll money goes, I assure you. It will be invested in the club. So far, the button is being pressed and I can’t ask for more than that.”
“We have done more business than anyone else.” “If you add up the money and think we have not spent the £35m, you will be way off. I have to mark the cards of the fans on that.”
That’s potentially good news on the two possible arrivals, so let’s hope he is talking about Mevlut Erdinc and Charles N’Zogbia, because if Newcastle can get those two through the door, things will certainly be looking up.
It’s going to be very difficult, as we have said before, to know just how much of the £35M will be reinvested – but it hardly looks like it’s much at the moment, but of course there are still almost two months to go in the transfer market.
We continue to live in hope.
What do you think?

Comment #2Not N’Zogbia unfortunately, he’ll be going to Villa. I hope it’s Erdinc, and towards the end of the window Chelsea make Sturridge available for loan and we get him.

Comment #4N’Zogbia would be great but I think that after moaning to get away in the first place Ashley won’t take the chance. However, it was reported that after Carroll was sold in January we did try to get him then.
Who knows?

Comment #5I also think that although Pardieu has the title of manager, he is more in the style of head coach as they have on the continent. He can ask for players but his job is to do the on field business with what he is given.

Comment #8“We have done more business than anyone else.” “If you add up the money and think we have not spent the £35m, you will be way off. I have to mark the cards of the fans on that.”( Pardew)
The above statement is an absolute disgrace and an insult on a massive scale to Newcastle United supporters
They have not spent a dam penny
What about the £60 million tv money ?
What about the season ticket sales ?
What about the merchandising sales ..Shirts etc ?
And what happened to the £20 million per season to pay running costs ? surely that pays for undersoil heating etc?
They and yes man Pardew are taking the absolute Piss with that statement above .
We have not spent a dam red cent on buying any player
And signing on fees can not amount to more than £3mill
As for wages should that not come out of TV money and Season ticket sales season to season ..after all we turn up and pay the money …What a regime. What a bunch of Fru**ng con men.

Comment #9Pardew seems to think that it’s ok to be misleading and say the 35m will be spent and leave people thinking that is on player transfer fee’s but actually it’s spent on the training ground and other things that would have had to be paid for anyway if they hadn’t sold Carroll. They sold a really good player, what matters is replacing that on the pitch. making excuses on agent fees for freebies is just a joke. Not being spoilt here. I never expected us to spend every penny on players but we could at least buy significant players to take us forward. A replacement number 9 is not a maybe, it’s a must. You love and die by your goal scorers. I will reserve judgement until September 1st as to how much they have lived up to that promise or if it is yet another slap in the face for the fans. I don’t expect trophy signings, just quality strength in depth. That’s what the majority of the cash from Carroll and Nolan should go on. This is not a cheap sports shop, it’s NUFC.

Comment #11The whole “wages come out of the £35m” line is a load of tosh. So what does all the other club revenue go on?
Surely if that’s how they’re spinning it, the figure would be higher than £35m as there’d be the saving on Carrol’s wages and bonuses paid out on his brand new 5 year deal.
Pull the other one Pardew!

Comment #12So Pardew says Nolan didnt want to stay.No its not surprising Ed.As usual with the Pardew spin, its what he doesnt say ie why Nolan didnt want to stay- how about Nolan not being shown any respect or loyalty back or being encouraged that there is a clear development plan.Having seen his mate Carroll shipped out with Barton next,he knew his card was marked. It all says to me the players dont trust the owner(and probably not the manager)
And as for the 35mill – dont get me started – patronising or what – telling us money is invested when clearly only a fraction is

Comment #14Im sorry, but I just dont get this club at all anymore.
At what point did the £35m become our sole budget for incoming players? We’ve so far made a few free signings and we are being asked to swallow the fact that the agents fees for these players has come out of that particular pot. We couldve signed these same players without having sold AC first – THEYRE FREE.
Im all for the club not being held to ransom over transfer fees and definately would hate to see any repeat of the Owen type fiascos that have plagued us over recent years, but with the utter drivvel that pours out of Pardews gob on a regular basis, Im inclined to believe we will see very little money given over in actual transfer fees. I honestly dont know how that man can look at himself in the mirror every morning knowing that he is either a bare faced liar or a pathetic little lap dog for a big fat sweaty rich fat twunt.

Comment #19Pards might as well just say “we’re not going to spend much if not any of the £35m.” £35m spent on wages?! Give over! What if we didn’t sell Carroll?….we would have no money for wages? What a load of rubbish! The club brings in millions every season from tv rights, merchandise sales, ticket sales and money from Ashley’s pocket which pays for wages, so why is the whole £35m not being used for players?! Bring in 2 players for £10m each and use the £15m left for wages over their 5 year contracts, sorted!

Comment #21Nightfall – dont think onlineguy is being a spoilt brat here.None of us want the bad old days of mortgaging the future against over the hill big names – its just that Pardew constantly comes out with platitudes and crap and insults our intelligence. How many times in his tenure has he made bold statements about what he wants and what he has been assured of by MA only to backtrack when the fat one pulls the rug from under him.I’ve some sympathy for him but he is a mouthpiece for Ashley and has no real influence.
If MA made some clear statement to the fans of his vision and the longterm plan, there wouldnt be such hostile opinion

Comment #22Look the players brought in so far are excellent business, for someone not a big fan of the present owner or his co-horts, thats a concessiom ok!
However the fans do have a point as far as the £35m. is concerned.
In fact very little has been spent to-date, but i will judge the summer window when the dust settles and we see what kinda side we have.
Appears we are playing a game of working to-wards a compromise with PSG for Erdinc, Nickel and dime stuff.
But my fear is that we ignore a still weak defense, with Enrique probably on his way and a lack of quality
backup across the back 4,cause all i hear about are midfielders .

Comment #24read between the lines gents. pardew never said the 35 mill was gone… he said it went a long way to getting us our current new employees… we aint that big a name and money talks. theres an amount of political correctness, management PR.. yeah for sure but this isnt lining anyones pockets justs some cant see the wood and the others cant see the trees. as fans we have never had a right to the clubs financial decision making process and we never have cared. we just want to watch the team and for me the overall frustration is simply that some cannot cope with the lack of control. if they leave whos gunna take over and do better? at this comparative level of wealth your not going to persuade anyone you know better..

Comment #25I’m sorry, but I agree with Nightfa11. I’m not getting into the whole mud slinging thing, but some posters on here need to realise that being outraged over the way the club is being run at the moment come across as very entitled. We’re not owed a damn thing by the club.
It’s amazing how people say that the club is run by liars, then go blue with rage when they feel we’ve been misled. What do you expect?
You think we’re about to lash out £20m on Sturridge?
Wake up. It ain’t gonna happen. We’ve had a scouting network in place that has identified quality players at very good prices which is to be applauded. Even if the money that people seem to think we are owed goes into Ashley’s back pocket, it’s still being invested in the club because it’s paying off the money the club owes him.
I still think we’ll have a good team come the end of this window, and that’s all I really care about. We still have six weeks. I’m not looking forward to the departures that are sure to be coming, but what I’m dreading the most is the reactions of fans who seem determined that we spend as much money as we can muster on players.

Comment #28ONLINE GUY says it all for me but I will add that Pardew said after Carroll was sold:
“One of the things I said to Mike was that if the boy was going to go, the money must be reinvested in the team. All of it.
“He assured me of that, so to all of the Newcastle fans that is the message I would give them: All of the money from Carroll will be used.”
but now he’s saying after spending atmost £5 million:
“We have done more business than anyone else.” “If you add up the money and think we have not spent the £35m, you will be way off. I have to mark the cards of the fans on that.”
What a joke, I only hope it’s “kidology” telling other clubs that we aint got much to spend whereas we have but somehow I doubt it.

Comment #29If we get erdinc and n’zogbia, neil taylor and replace any first teamers that leave then we have a pretty strong squad, as long as foreigners adapt to the pace we are only maybe lacking at right back and maybe a centre half after colo but simmo and taylor/willo are hardly dreadful

Comment #30Why is everyone talking about the AC money bein spent on wages. what about the money saved on AC wages which were over 40k a week and Nolan which was 50k a week. surely that money saved from those contracts have been transfered onto the much cheaper contracts the new signings are on so most of that ‘£35m’ should still be there.
We all new it wasnt goin to get spent we just did wat us Newcastle fans do best which is try to passionately believe maybe…..just maybe this time will be different.
Dont get me wrong i dont agree with the silly panic buys of previous owners and our scouting team is doing a good job so far. But most clubs are run at a debt so the way we were run before is not much different to that of any other team. But what player in this day and age when football is run by media and money is going to accept contracts when bonuses are not involved in them and that is FACT in many a situation at the club.

Comment #31i will bet any of you the club will not spend £20 of that money in fact id be surprised if £15 was spent on transfer fees.
More than likely from all the transfer speculation:
£1m on NTaylor
£7m on Erdinc
Nice £27m in Ashley pocket ooo no sorry forgot about wages, under soil heating. infact why dont we build a new stadium with that £35m cause its getting the credit for every other area of the clubs development, what about our hard earned cash we pump in2 the club for merchandise and tickets.
(before you start the underground soil was me exaggerating, just trying make a point)

Comment #32The quotations above are totally out of context, you missed out what happened before he said the quote about the 35M. He was talking about the end of the transfer window in august when he said:
“If you add up the money and think we have not spent the £35m, you will be way off. I have to mark the cards of the fans on that.”
They were talking about the end of the transfer window!

Comment #33I don’t see why people are presuming money is going to be spent soon from this comment. It sounds far more like he is validating the lack of obvious spending by saying some of the 35m has already been used (presumably in wages) for these signings and “invested into the club”- which means not pocketed by Ashley!

Comment #36Of course Nolan wanted to leave. He wouldn’t make the bench unless we had injuries. And no one with any ambition (or even in their right mind, enter stage left Sam A) would offer someone already that slow a five year contract that takes him into the Zimmer years. So yes of course he wanted to leave and it’s only a surprise if you are not paying attention.

Comment #37I’m glad Pardew said we don’t have as much money, it means other clubs will think we have a smaller transfer pot and thus be less prone to charge us ridiculous prices.
For those who say we haven’t spent anything, here’s a scenario to consider.
Rangers have signed McGregor and Whittaker to new 6 and 5 year contracts at about 26k a week for both players. The estimated total amount to be paid for these new contracts? 12mil.
12 mil on two players getting resigned and thus no transfer fees involved.
Now, let’s analyze this with Marveaux and Demba Ba. Two free agents who would normally command a decent transfer fee, and as such would probably normally have a decent wage. Add this in that they are free agents and they will probably get a nicer wage packet and signing on fee. Now, if the two rangers players cost 12mil for their new contracts, we can probably say that Marveaux and Demba Ba cost more than that, as I feel that they are both probably on higher wages.
Thus, I completely disagree with those of you who say we haven’t spent a penny, in reality, Newcastle have spent quite a bit and more will be bought even yet. There are two whole more months to come, pipe down.
Four players were signed before window officially opened. That is a type of planning Newcastle are not generally known for. I was very happy with that personally as these deals must have been started some time ago, which means the club weren’t lying when they said back so many months ago that they were already looking at new players. With two more months to come I am excited to see who else gets tied up.
