We’ve seen this link before – that Barcelona may be interested in Newcastle left back Jose Enrique.
Jose Enrique – wants Champions League football next season
But Jose’s agent at the time said there had been absolutely no contact with Barcelona, so whether this is just a regurgitation of that same old story, we don’t know.
It’s in the Evening Chronicle, and the news is that Jose may be on the shortlist at the Spanish Champions.
Jose will be at the Benton training center today, and he has annoyed Newcastle officials over the summer by avoiding the club’s attempts to contact him to discuss their contract proposal.
But Alan Pardew will corral the player today presumably, and see where he stands about wanting to stay at Newcastle, or whether he wants to go to pastures anew.
If the story of Barcelona’s interest is true, Joe would probably swim across to Spain, because it would put him at the best club in the world at the moment, and his chances of playing for Spain would be improved big time.
Barcelona can play Eric Abidal in that position, Brazilian Maxwell and promising youngster Andreu Fontas could also be fighting for that left-back spot.
But there is an interesting quote by Enrique today, as a source said to be close to Jose (Enrique himself?) told the Evening Chronicle that Jose wants Champions league football:
“Jose is not convinced that Newcastle have enough depth ahead of the new season.”
“At 25 he is keen to look elsewhere and has a burning desire to play in the Champions League next season.”
As we’ve said many times before, if Jose wants to go – sell him for the highest transfer we can get for him – and Jose has given four good years to the Newcastle club.
Arsenal are also said to be interested in the player, and they can offer Champions League football, but Liverpool could not meet that requirement, although Liverpool are also said to still be keen on the Spanish U21 International.
