Newcastle To Go After Long If They Cannot Get Erdinc?

There are reports in Ireland today that Newcastle may be after Reading striker  Shane Long.

Shane Long – is this lad worth £10M?

We’d be just a little bit surprised if there is any truth in these reports, since the number one target at Newcastle  is still PSG’s Mevlut Erdinc, and we are awaiting news if that deal has been successful.

The report in Ireland suggests Newcastle could make a player plus cash deal, and maybe Newcastle will offer 24 year-old Leon Best in part exchange, that could be a possibility.

The Newcastle Journal is reporting this morning that while Alan Pardew is keen on Long, other Newcastle management may not be so keen – so we assume that is Mike Ashley and Derek LLambias, although it may also be Chief Scout Graham Carr.

Wolves, Everton and Sunderland (of course),  are also said to be interested in the Irish International striker,  who scored 25 goals last season for Reading, and looks a natural goalscorer.

Reading are said to want £10M for the striker, but in our poll on that fee, 79% of our readers think he is not worth £10M, with almost 900 votes in – but maybe he’s worth Best plus say £2M.

That’s because if Shane is worth £10M then Best is probably worth £8M – how about that for some decent logic?.

At least Leon Best has shown he can score goals in the Premier League, with 6 goals in 12 appearances this year, and we think he looked very good,  and we’re not sure why the club are selling the lad.

If Newcastle do not get Mevlut Erdinc through the door, they may go after Shane Long or even Daniel Sturridge of Chelsea, but first of all we await  news on whether the club have been able to get Erdinc.

Maybe that news will come today – we hope so – and we hope Newcastle are successful.

Comments welcome.

Actually we have nothing to worry about. We wont sign Long, he’s not a free transfer. And by free i mean really secretly expensive.

Long is probably not better than Leon Best. So no thanks. If we send Lovenkrands and Shola in return for him in a straight swap deal I’m positive though.

    Yeah right… 10 mill for a unproven player in a highest level… We’re not 5under1and.

not the clubs accountant so personally don’t care how much we pay for players! Long is a good player! He runs all day, chases every ball, works hard etc, with Ben Arfa, Marveaux, Cabaye etc not having the most amazing work rate off the ball, someone like shane long, pressing from the front might be a good way to go! I remember a while back hearing that we would sign 2 more strikers after Ba, if those 2 strikers are Erdinc and Long, I will be ecstatic!

This guy is a 25 goal scorer, an Irish international, the asking price is £10m., probably go for around £8m.
He could team up with his Irish team-mate Best and who knows could be a good partnership.
Fact is Best could have been on his way to a very good season and you dont get 25 goals in whatever league through luck .
Obvious that Erdinc has no intention of comming here
and niether Bentner or Sow either so i say get the kid,
A 24 yr old , ticks all the boxes and could be a fan favorite, hell they went to £7m for Erdinc, no where near as prolific a scorer.
If it,s as suggested Carr who is against the deal he better get an appointment with spec savers.

I for one think we should be keeping Best, think he can keep progressing, however Long would be very good for keeping the strikers sharp and performing as he can also do a decent job!!! Erding and Ba obviously first 2 with HBA behind….and Please Please lets get Shola and Loven into the Championship which is clearly there level!!!!

Fancy that team to do very well indeed……not sure Enrique will be the left back though might be Neil Taylor who I also think will do a good job for the team. Enrique wants Champ League football so he’s away 99.9%…..still with 00.01% chance he might stay we can but hope!!!

im not sure about the money , but Long is one of these kids just seems to be in the right place at the right time , dont matter what league that your in having that knack isnt going to harm your chances and tbh looking at the midfield we gonna have i reckon even Shola could get goals with that kinda service

I really like Long, think he has cracking potential. People sound more optimistic about a Ligue 1 striker with an unimpressive GS record, or two random Sierre Leone strikers who we have never seen than this guy. The only fear i have about signing Long is the amount of clowns who will claim he is not good enough and is just another Leon Best or James Perch when in fact he has potential to be a top PL striker and would be a fantastic foil for Demba Ba.

    Long>Erdinc

    My team for next year:

    Harper
    Simpson, Taylor, Colocinni, Enrique/Naylor

    Barton, Tiote, Cabaye, Jonas/Marvaux

    Ben Arfa
    Ba/Long

    Subs:
    Krul,
    Williamson,
    Gosling
    Marvaux/Jonas,
    Guthrie,
    Long/Ba – depending on form
    Ferguson

DanToon, I agree with that selection 100%. Lovenkrands can be put on the bench from time to time as well. As for long, he’s no better than Best imo. He should at least be given a chance.

So you think Carr is infalable is it ?
Actually Ed . mentioned a rumor that “perhaps” Carr and Ashley were against the idea of signing him.
Look for those on here who obviously have no clue who he is.
The kid is not unproven in the PL, he played there with his international partners, Kevin Doyle (now at Wolves and a big money target for Arry at Spurs) , (and Steven Hunt, also at Wolves) when he was 19 yr. old, partnering Doyle and has been a regular in the Irish side for five years.
No one gets 25 goals through luck regardless of what league you are in and at 24 with all that experience, i would forget Erdinc and get this kid before we lose out entirely.

It would be sensible to KEEP BEST! For god sake. Give them Lovenkrands + Ranger + 3 mil, and it will be OK. If we still have problems with strikers, buy one in Jan. We still have Airey, who has pace and is really good finisher, and with good set up could score around 8-9 goals next season even if coming from the bench.

Long is a much better player than Best but he isn’t worth £10m if we can get him for £5m then I would buy him if Erdinc isn’t coming.

Long could be class at Newcastle. He and Best are so underrated, they are both internationals, young and will only improve. Look how much Best has improved over the year (and he could have done more if hadn’t picked the injury). Shola is good on his day, but we have to wait for that day to long, on the other hand he showed his contribution to the club, playing through pain, and maybe if he could stay fit all season he could convert his contibution to goals. We will have a good midfield next season, so strikers will score more goals this season. Looking forward to it. 🙂

I live not far from Reading and a lot of my friends are Reading fans. The general consensus is that he’s a good little striker and he was in the form of his life last season, but none of them are 100% convinced that he’d make the step up.

I think it’s a non-starter, given Reading’s valuation (which will have to come down if he’s to move). If we were prepared to splash £10m on a player, I doubt it would be someone unproven from a lower league.

Not sure how he can be compared to Best. The big lad did nowt for us in the Championship and Long got 25 goals last season. When Best got his chance in the EPL he banged in a hatrick and got himself a ratio of a goal every two games. Swings and roundabouts, I suppose, but I think we’re probably aiming a little higher than Long.

Wouldn’t mind if he was cheap and bought in as back up, mind.

chuck, i just trust that Carr is a good judge of player as he is our head scout and meant to be 1 of the best in the business. If he feels Long isn’t good enough to cut it after watching him, thats enough for me! Not saying he’s infallable, just saying he’s 1 of the top authorities on scouting players, to go against his advice wouldn’t be the best idea, especially at the price being quoted! Personally I like Long, hes hardworking and has a great attitude!

I posted this on a previous post and im willing to put my neck on the line because i believed the guy who told me, this is a done deal for 7.8 million. The guy that told me said he was on the board at reading, might sound a bit strange but I asked around after he had left and it turns out he is.

I dont know how we started talking about football but after he said he was on the board (me being Irish and a toon fan) asked about long – a done deal but he’s not convinced he will make the step up, but he said he’s a lovely guy and will fit in nicely to the squad.

    Believe what you will

    Why the long face evcryone???!!!!!!

Joking aside, not good enough for the premier league. No better than what we have already in my view. We need 2 top quality strikers and we are not going to get it as we are going nowhere with this owner. Sick to death of hearing about this 35 million. Rather than buying shops with the 35 million you fat cockney you need to plough some money into the football team. If you not going to do that, then just feck off and sell up you and take all your muppets and puppets with you. The sooner the better. Might be alright financially but no good having that if we go down, back to square 1. But its like talking to a brick wall!!!
