There are reports in Ireland today that Newcastle may be after Reading striker Shane Long.
Shane Long – is this lad worth £10M?
We’d be just a little bit surprised if there is any truth in these reports, since the number one target at Newcastle is still PSG’s Mevlut Erdinc, and we are awaiting news if that deal has been successful.
The report in Ireland suggests Newcastle could make a player plus cash deal, and maybe Newcastle will offer 24 year-old Leon Best in part exchange, that could be a possibility.
The Newcastle Journal is reporting this morning that while Alan Pardew is keen on Long, other Newcastle management may not be so keen – so we assume that is Mike Ashley and Derek LLambias, although it may also be Chief Scout Graham Carr.
Wolves, Everton and Sunderland (of course), are also said to be interested in the Irish International striker, who scored 25 goals last season for Reading, and looks a natural goalscorer.
Reading are said to want £10M for the striker, but in our poll on that fee, 79% of our readers think he is not worth £10M, with almost 900 votes in – but maybe he’s worth Best plus say £2M.
That’s because if Shane is worth £10M then Best is probably worth £8M – how about that for some decent logic?.
At least Leon Best has shown he can score goals in the Premier League, with 6 goals in 12 appearances this year, and we think he looked very good, and we’re not sure why the club are selling the lad.
If Newcastle do not get Mevlut Erdinc through the door, they may go after Shane Long or even Daniel Sturridge of Chelsea, but first of all we await news on whether the club have been able to get Erdinc.
Maybe that news will come today – we hope so – and we hope Newcastle are successful.
