Alan Pardew will soon have to appoint a new captain to replace the departed Kevin Nolan.
Joey Barton – could he be the new captain
And the three main candidates for the job would seem to be Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini and Joey Barton.
But our new 26 year-old Senegal striker has quickly ruled himself out of the job, as Demba Ba said today:
“I am not here to be a captain or a leader,” “Other people here can do this job – players who have been here a long time.”
“I am not interested in being captain and there are many who should be captain before me.”
Those are good words from Ba, and we wonder if Alan Pardew will go for Joey Barton as captain next season?
Pardew and Barton get on famously, and that would certainly mean that Joey would play a big part in the coming season, and the captain’s job could even help him get a new deal on Tyneside, which he is still very keen to do.
But, come to think of it, if didn’t help Kevin Nolan get the deal he wanted on Tyneside.
There’s no doubt that Barton would be a controversial choice, but if he terminates that Twitter account of his, it may even be possible, and whoever the choice is – it has to be Alan Pardew’s choice and his alone.
But it could be that Joey has already burned his bridges with the club’s hierarchy (Ashley and LLambias), and he could still be on his way out of the club this summer.
Between Fab Coloccini and Steven Taylor, the Argentine has the advantage that he is a regular first teamer, whereas Steven has struggled for his first team place, and Mike Williamson has regularly been preferred in the side.
However, Fabricio’s English is still not too good, so we think it will be a toss up between Steven and Fab for the captain’s job.
We have to think Joey would be too controversial a choice for Alan to make, although it’s possible, and we don’t even know if Joey will be allowed into the US this summer, because of that jail time he served three years ago.
There’s little doubt it will be very interesting to see what Newcatsle squad we end up with on September 1st.
Comments welcome.

Comment #42What winds me up the most is that the club stuck by him during his behaviour/injury problems and as soon as he starts to pay the club back with good performances they’re potentially getting rid of him.
I think the days of having heroes at the club are over. We’ll never see another Shearer because either the players have no loyalty to the club (Carroll) or the club has no loyalty to the players (Nolan). The club’s transfer policy is starting to remind me of a conveyor belt.

You should be a bit more carefull in what you say.
Your comments are a thinly vieled hatchet job on Joey, even bringing up his jail sentance.
As far as who should be captain, there’s only one legitamate choice, only one person who carries the weight required.
Who by example like a Roy keane, drove this (not that great a side) to punch above their weight last season.
Niether Colo or Ta ylor have the character or charisma for the job.
As for him being controversial as you claim and on his way out, plus your suggestion he terminate his twitter account.
Hey! screw you it’s really none of your business, this is not Mao’s China or the Soviet union.
One additional thing, Williamson is nowhere near the player S.Taylor is, if you dont get that, then you obviously have little real undestanding of football.

Comment #44I see the unwashed doon the road are going transfer crazy with O’Shea & Brown about to sign and according to BBC they are also about to sign Vaughan from Blackpool. Apart from Whickham there isn’t one player they’ve signed that I would have at the Toon. I hope they get relegated

Comment #46Give it to Tayls, you can see on the pitch that even when hes not captain he shows that hes a born leader. Hes young, a fantastic defender and can only get better, only a few years ago he was in the running to play for England, giving the captaincy would nly make him better as a player and as an individual off the pitch. Hes english too which means he is able to communicate with the officials effectivly. His shoulders are broad enough for him to take on the responsibility so go on Pardew give it to Tayls.

Comment #49rather have Colo and Saylor as captain and vice captain. Joey has burnt his bridges in my eyes, MA might be a c**t but doesn’t matter who you are, smack talking your boss in public doesn’t help your career one bit.
It brings discord and disharmony to the fans and fellow employees, to reward it would cause more problems.

Comment #58Williamson was not excellent for us last season. It’s just that he only cost 1m and surprised us.
He makes loads of mistakes, hes got no pace and he’s clumsy. Colloccini had a far better season that the relegation one and carried Williamson.
Taylor is a more accomplished defender than Williamson and should start every game he’s fit, no questions.

Comment #64Barton for captain? He’s stupid, he’s talking to much and already he refused new contract back in january… If he playerd whole 4 years in the club like the last season… It’s been okay to me, but first 2 years was miserable… Thanks, but no thanks. Colo is the man.

I just dont think williamson should start if Taylor is fit. No way. My reasoning has little to do with fees. The reason i mentioned it is to do with him not being a flop (as someone who costs 1m is expoected to be)
As far Smith, he is anything but ‘accomplished’ in the premiser league. He was laughable. Tiote looked superb. Genuinely.
Williamson looked decent for 1m so i believe most people got slightly carried away and thought he was a world beater.

Comment #67Going out on a limb here and gonna say
Cabaye Should be Captain (Provided he impresses Pre-Season)
Logically in my opinion he would be the best candidate, due to the fact that he will be in the centre of a 90% french/french speaking Midfield/Attack force next season. Who better to communicate with those around him. On top of that he seems level headed and wont bully the ref everytime a decision goes against us *cough* Manure*cough*
If he can get his English sorted, he could be the new captain imo.
P.S im not a big fan of the Captain being a Defender/Striker. No idea why, just don’t really fancy it.

Comment #71Doubt HBA would be made captain. Need a defensive player who can watch our defensive line and monitor the flow of the game.
Cheick would be a good option as it might rid him of a bit of his recklessness, Cabaye could also be an option.
But still think either Saylor or Colo will get the nod

Comment #72@Chuck it’s all about form as well because Taylor is nowhere near the player he has the potential to be right now. And his last 3 games were only seen as good because he scored in each of the last 3 games. That’s not a bad thing but isn’t what he is primarily on the pitch for.
So is a bit harsh to criticise everyone’s “little real understanding of football” as you so eloquently put it.

Comment #74Every time that a news article is reported about the tour of America they mention that they dont know whether Barton will be let in due to his previous convictions, is everyone forgetting that Joey was over in America for his holidays this year so i am pretty sure they are gonna let him in.
I say see who becomes a leader on the pitch pre season now Nolan is gone and give them a try.

I have said it before and gonna repeat it, Williamson is not a good player.
This is a guy constantly sliding in and ending on his ass.
Why / cause he does,nt read the game well, all the great defenders were positionally astute , never having to slide in, which leaves you out of the play and on your asss .
for someone with his size, poor in the air, tends to ball watch, hey i could go on.
He cost £1m. and thats what he,s worth, at best a backup
player.
Anyone comparing him with Taylor is showung their ignorance.
