Newcastle Make Offer For Top Championship Central Midfielder

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Newcastle have made a £1.5M bid for Nottingham Forest 22 year-old midfielder Lewis McGugan.

Lewis McGugan – top young Championship central midfielder

Last season,  McGugan  appeared 45 times with 13 goals and 16 assists for Forest, and came through big time,  and is now one of the most highly-rated youngsters in the Championship.

McGugan was also Forest’s top scorer in the Championship last season.

Lewis plays as a central midfielder, and he has represented England at both U17 and U19 level, and is known for his ability to score goals from long-range and from free kicks.

The Nottingham-born player joined his home town way club back in 2004 as a 15 year-old, and came through the Forest Academy, and has now played 157 times for Nottingham Forest with  31 goals and 26 assists.

Alan Pardew said he was going to being in some top young players from the lower leagues, so this is not all that surprising.

On the other hand, it’s hard to know whether these youngsters will be able to make the step up to the huge demands of the Premier League – something that James Perch was not able to do last season.

But from what we can tell, this could even be a decent signing by Newcastle, and Lewis probably fits in with the prosed Neil Taylor transfer from Swansea- young players who are expected to come through in the next year or so on Tyneside.

Comments welcome.

He’s a good player. We should swap Gurthie/Routledge for him as he is better than them and could learn a lot from the players we have. Don’t think £1.5m would get him though.

No way, pull out another Perch?

By the way, someone editing the NUFC wiki page… has given Ranger the number 9 shirt. Is there anything we don’t know?

By the way, Cabaye was “assigned” number 4, and Xisco was “assigned number 13.

great stats for last season on this lad, dont really know much about him but seems like he would be a good back up for cabaye. anyone know if he can tackle or what his work rate is like.

pizzic you can not argue with his stats. Are people never going to forget about Perch? Everytime we are linked with a lower league player it’s he’s another perch yada yada yada. This lad is actually a very good footballer.

@ochytoon, oh yea. I understand that totally. For whoever giving Ranger the number 9 shirt, he must be mentally disordered.

@Andy, I agree with you, but I would like to see some proof in front of me. You know, Perch was great when he was with the Forest.

My bottom line is that he must show us what he can do when he becomes our player. That’s what I am asking for only.

Same applies to Cabaya, Ba, etc. There’s no super player in EPL until someone proves himself to be one.

Willing to take a risk on him, could pay off and I’m sure a straight swap for Routledge could be on the cards

He won’t be another Perch. He’s a good young player with a lot of ability. He’ll be a squad player if we sign him.

Why have we bid £1.5m for him though when Forrest have offered us £1.25m for Routledge? Just offer 250k and do a player swap deal.

Thought you’d be back daffy. None of the signings you made would make our starting 11. O’shea has been torn a new one every time he’s played against jonas. Anyways can’t wait for 2nd game of the season it should be a belter!

    daffy ;

I’d rather sign a hungry young talented player than average players who are past their best on massive wages. Well done on offering O’Shea and Brown 5 year contracts. That means you will be paying them 40k a week each when they’re 35 years old.

After seeing him in a few games last year I’d say he’s worth a punt. He’d provide some good competition and has a lot of potential!

strengthened squad i said first 11. Have we not strengthened? Ba is better than any other Cabaye is better than Nolan Marveaux is better as a winger than Barton and HBA is back. Quantity over quality is what you’ve went for. We’ll see which is best

Everytime i watch this lad he either blazes a 25 yarder top corner or smashes a 35 yarder off the bar. Dont know what his all round play is like but is very explosive. And whoever said another perch try watching players before you judge them.

Ah some sense on here. Not every forest signing will be another perch. But then not every big signing is a Michael Owen, and not every Carr signing is a Tiote.
