Coloccini – An Honor To Be Newcastle United Captain

11:06 am, Friday, July 8th, 2011 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 63 Comments

Lee Ryder has nabbed the first interview with Newcastle’s new captain Fabricio Coloccini,  in the Evening Chronicle today.

Fab Coloccini – it’s an honor

Coloccini had this to say on the appointment he was handed after training yesterday afternoon by Alan Pardew:

“To receive an honor like this is like getting a gift.“

“I am very proud to be wearing the armband for Newcastle United, and I am looking forward to leading the team into the new season ahead.”

And former captains Bob Moncur and Glenn Roeder, both think it’s an excellent appointment, as do most of our readers as 93% think it’s a good appointment in the poll we put out earlier today.

Bobby Moncur had thought Coloccini would make an excellent captain and he was Bobby’s choice for captain, and the former captain had this to say today:

“I think it’s fantastic news for the fans first and foremost because it would presumably put an end to any talk of him leaving the club.

“I’ve always felt that a defender is the ideal candidate for the role, and it certainly gets the thumbs up from me.

“Colo has proved he can lead by example and there is no doubt he is regarded as one of our marquee players these days.

“It’s great that Alan Pardew has got this sorted out so early because everybody now knows where they stand.”

Well it certainly seems that manager Alan Pardew has made an excellent choice, and we know full well the Argentine will wear the armband with great pride.

Comments welcome.

Don’t think he deserves it unlike Saylor

  • 3 Miserable Now // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:09 AM

    Good choice.
Just needs to use his influence to encourage Jose and Jonas to sign up.

  • 4 TS -77 // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:11 AM

    Great choice! Congratulations Collo!!

  • 5 BiggMarketBoy // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:11 AM

It’s also on the official site now…

  • 6 Miserable Now // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:11 AM

    @ 2-

there were only two candidates really and there’s not much between them.
I suppose there’s a question mark over whether Saylor would displace Williamson when he’s fit.
Saylor seems to be getting back to that early promise after a lull- he’s the next John Terry apparently, so keep him away from you wife!

  • 7 TS -77 // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:12 AM

Or should I say: Una gran oportunidad! Felicidades Collo

  • 8 sammydolan // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:14 AM

What the same Saylor that threw his toys of the pram & tried to get a move to Everton….

    Great appointment.

  • 9 ToonDownSouth // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:15 AM

    Miserable Now

Jonas can’t sign a contract he hasn’t been offered! 😛

Colo is a good choice, but a strange one. He’s on 75k a week, and is 30 (ish?). How long is left on his contract? Surely he will be moved on soon :/

  • 10 ToonDownSouth // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:17 AM

I think Saylor will be captain one day. But he’s not mature enough at the moment. Wait until he’s shown the commitment to the club that other players did first.

I guess the way Colo plays is also a factor here. He’s a ball playing defender, doesn’t hoof it up the pitch, does like to wander forward. It’s how Pardew wants us to play right?

  • 11 TS -77 // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:18 AM

Or maybe we should put in french:

    Excellent choix! Félicitations Collo!

  • 12 Miserable Now // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:19 AM

    @ 9- ToonDownSouth

    Good point well made.

I just hope any contract offered to Jose doesn’t contain a £1m release fee!

  • 13 Nick 69 // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:20 AM

well at least this should put to bed any specualtion of him leaving I guess. Good choice

  • 14 premier // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:20 AM

Can he speak French as good as his English–lol

  • 15 Eastander // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:21 AM

a lot of reports that a 6’3 black player seen at st james’ with agent yesterday, reports linking us to Khouma Babacar (18year old 6’3 no 9 for fiorentina) who we happen to have just arranged a friendly with… hmm

  • 16 Lachu // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:22 AM

Great choice , great player , great fitness , and played alongside some absolute legends like Paolo Maldini

  • 17 Miserable Now // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:22 AM

that thought crossed my mind- but then you would think a local lad being given a bumper contract and the No.9 shirt would’ve hung around a bit longer as well.

Am sure Ashley would like that weekly wage knocked off the balance sheet, so you never know.

  • 18 ToonDownSouth // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:22 AM

Haha. The level of faith in the hierarchy is so unbelievably low, that it’s a genuine concern!

I imagine if he was somehow convinced to sign up, that it would contain a release clause for CL teams.

Also, I do really like Jonas. People talk about a lack of goals and assists, but that’s not all that matters. Modric only got a couple of goals and 6 assists last season, and he’s incredible. Plus Jonas isn’t actually left footed!

I just hope we’re willing to let Jonas’ contract run down, rather than be greedy and take the 2/3m that we can get like we did with Nolan 🙁

  • 19 tiotal football // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:24 AM

instead put in one of these you can talk to any other clubs but can’t actually sign for them clauses?

  • 20 jayphoto // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:25 AM

to be honest this was a bit of a no brainer! Really, the only candidates for it were harper (might not even play), s.taylor (again, not nailed on for starting 11) Joey Barton (might be gone by sept) and tiote (maybe a little too quiet on the pitch). Collo is the only nailed to start when fit candidate! hope that means we’ve got him for at least another season! he’s got 2 years on his deal but heard he’s really settled into the city!

  • 21 Klatoon // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:26 AM

Cant remember the last time Colo missed a game injured, always fit and one of the players who are assured of a start next season. Also he seems to be well liked by the lads. Good choice by Alain Pardeaux

  • 22 Cheick and Bake // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:31 AM

    not a bad choice

  • 23 geoff777 // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:33 AM

Ba & Babacar – got to be some good chants there.

    Sign him up.

  • 24 joppadoni // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:34 AM

great news, im very pleased for him. model professional, argie international ( will be again i suspect ) an ever present and seems a nice chap. my only reservation is he comes across as quiet…

although his hair , ofc, speaks massive volumes

  • 25 Rotonda heights // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:35 AM

    babacar ‘s a beast, hope it’s true

  • 26 shearer 9 // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:38 AM

babacar is way too good for us lol

  • 27 davybtoon // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:39 AM

pardew said still after a few younger players so babacar or sanago fit that bill

on nzogbia i still dont think were after him, id rather get menez n hes cheaper

  • 28 MacToon(Vive le Neuchâtel) // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:40 AM

Agree 100% with Bobby Moncur, good choice and assume he’s staying at the club for atleast this season!

  • 29 davybtoon // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:40 AM

imaging if we signed sanago n babacar now that wud b 2 quality young signings both 6,3 strikers

  • 30 geoff777 // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:42 AM

    @shearer 9

Sign of the times that you would think that.

  • 31 barryvenison // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:43 AM

So glad we have apparently sold Routledge for 2 million. We should now be able to use the funds earned to have the water turned back on at St.James’ and our groundskeeper mow our pitch twice as often. All reinvested into the club. Brilliant news.

  • 32 Eastander // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:45 AM

and didnt people say we were after a striker from italy, fiorentina fit into that and that 3 players were in a hotel, one of which spoke french, babacar is from senagal, where they speak french…

  • 33 davybtoon // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:46 AM

transfer rumours – khouma babacar all but signed according to his agent love that site

on defoe to scum can see this one happening as spurs want gyan swap deal

  • 34 davybtoon // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:47 AM

eastender makes sense like hes young n spks french plus friendly with fiorentina cud of been part of the deal

  • 35 tiotal football // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:49 AM

it’s already on wikipedia about Pardew’s interest:

Babacar is strongly linked with a move to English Premier League side Newcastle United after impressing manager Alan Pardew.

Also, he’s from senegal so that would fit the whole frnech speaking rumour in the hotel.

  • 36 geoff777 // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:51 AM

… and his Wikipage says Pardew likes him …

but how tall is Carlton Cole?

& can Emile Heskey speak French?

  • 37 Rotonda heights // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:52 AM

    Shearer 9

    shut up !!!

  • 38 tiotal football // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:53 AM

his goal scoring record isn’t exactly the best though, 1 goal in 22 league appearances.

yeah he is 18 but not exactly setting serie on fire is he

    still sign him up!

  • 39 geoff777 // Jul 8, 2011 at 11:53 AM

    God, this is exciting.

I was going to walk my donkeys and have a glass of sangria, but I think I’ll stay in and refresh Ed’s blog every 30 seconds instead. 😉

    Babacar and Ba.

    Babcar??? any good???

  • 44 alex84 // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:04 PM

  • 45 StuW // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:05 PM

I knew he would get it. Over the past two seasons, he has, along with Jose, been our standout player. TBH, I thought he may have offered it to Jose to keep him here, but I always wanted Fab as ‘El Capitan’. Well deserved/.

  • 46 sweendog // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:07 PM

sanago and babacar … sounds like sanago has much more potential .. still fits the bill of what somebody said on newcastlerumours about a 6’3 french speaker .. babacar looks the most likely

  • 47 geoff777 // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:10 PM

Manchester City have confirmed the City of Manchester Stadium will be renamed the Etihad Stadium after signing a 10-year deal with the airline.

  • 48 Andy // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:11 PM

Yep because newcastle rumours is reliable. The fact it has the word RUMOURS should be a hint. Also the guy who reckons he works at jesmond dene house hotel can’t even spend the thing! It’s all bollocks

  • 49 RedMissionBells // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:12 PM

Coloccini is a great choice for club captain.
Coloccini is at the heart of our defence and has put in some very good performances for us. He is consistent and hardly gets injured.

I do not understand why are some of the readers so keen on Steven Taylor being our captain.
Taylor has hardly done anything last season, other than a few cameo appearances at the end of the season. Taylor, at times, have been a clown for us.

I am not even sure if Taylor is a starter for us since Williamson has shown he CAN hold his own in the top league.

Those of you who want Steven Taylor to be captain, wake up your idea.

  • 50 Eastander // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:13 PM

andy… spend the thing? the timing of that typo, rather good if you meant it :p

  • 51 sweendog // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:14 PM

Andy .. chill .. its all rumours unless you are in with Carr, Pardew, Ashley and know different ..

  • 52 Andy // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:14 PM

I know haha i was just sitting there reading it back hitting myself in the face! *facepalm*

  • 53 JP...from The Rock // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:14 PM

Good choice! It was between him and Saylor for me. With Saylor struggling with injuries and not making the team regularly this decision makes sense as Colo is an ever present in the side and a model professional. I bet that he’ll be over ythe moon to be our Captain and good luck to him, he’s earned it.

    Saylor for Vice Captain though.

PS. Didn’t Pardew say he was going to name the Captain in the last week of August ??????????????????????????????????????????

    I guess he couldn’t wait.

  • 54 tiotal football // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:20 PM

I know it’s a big ask but why can’t one of the lads on here just take one for the team and start dating Alan Carr.

That way we’ll be privvy to all the goings on.

Not asking too much am I..?

(Or if a lady fancies a challenge then please go ahead as well)

  • 55 geoff777 // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:21 PM

It was funny because 3 really dubious facts & rumours seem to merge into one Babacar rumour.

    @JP…from The Rock

He did say that … either his short-term memory is completely shot … (keep of the weed Pards!) or an order came down from the puppet master.

  • 56 davybtoon // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:22 PM

gosling n hba to get 45mins at darlo nice one

  • 57 geoff777 // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:25 PM

Spent the first 29 years of my life in Darlo.

45 minutes is a better option.

  • 58 Obafan // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:37 PM

Perfect choice; great player and character…

    – Barton: not the correct attitude to lead a team. And will he be here in September???
    – Saylor: an average defender at best. Still don’t know how most on here think he will be international one day. It is not because he made 3 goals that he is a good defender.

Tioté should be vice captain. Very good player, and he is a real fighter. Only negative thing about him is the way he keeps getting yellow cards…

  • 59 styla // Jul 8, 2011 at 12:39 PM

something for you guys to take notice of if your all still interested in Mevlut Erding.,,11095_7027928,00.html

A source close to me says that a good sum of the 35mill is being spent on French Lessons for the non french speaking players, the staff, the groundsman and the lunch lady.

    4 lessons a week.

  • 61 Shearer9nufc // Jul 9, 2011 at 4:30 AM

Im happy. He’s like the Carles Puyol of Newcastle (both with the long curly hair)!

  • 62 pedro // Jul 9, 2011 at 5:30 AM

Could be coinicidence but its funny that Babacar and Sanogo are two of the best young strikers to buy on football manager and now people are saying we should sign them. Has anyone actually watched either one of them play?!

  • 63 pedro // Jul 9, 2011 at 5:33 AM

It appears from the wiki pages that neither has played too much for the respective clubs. Sanogo has 1 appearance for Auxerre!
