It seems to have been a slow weekend as far as any interesting news on Newcastle is concerned.
Dave Whelan – ready to sell Charles N’Zogbia
But there is some news on Charles N’Zogbia today from his Chairman at Wigan, Dave Whelan, and Wigan seem ready to let Charles go, but whether Newcastle will now be in for him we have no idea, but we have our doubts.
This is what Dave told the Daily Mail:
“We have to sell Charles N’Zogbia because he’s on the last year of his contract,”
“We can’t keep him if a big club comes for him and he does deserve a big club because he’s that kind of quality player.”
There’s been lots of speculation about where the French International will end up, and Newcastle, Sunderland, Liverpool and lately Aston Villa have all been linked with the winger.
And only today there is news that Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is keen to take him to the Stadium of Light, and certainly Bruce is getting lots of new players into Sunderland over the last couple of weeks.
Charles has one year left on his contract and there’s always a chance he could elect to stay at Wigan and see out his contract and then set up a bumper deal next summer as a free agent.
That would not be good for Wigan of course, which is why we think Wigan will try to sell him this summer.
“We’ve got a lot of good players and it is understandable people are looking at them.”
“There’s been a lot of media speculation – that is part of being in the transfer window – but I am more focused on trying to reach the targets we set.”
“The players are under contract.’‘We would love to keep him and pay him what he wants to stay with us but it’s a very difficult situation.”
‘”He’s such a great player and we are such a small club sometimes we don’t go together,’
Newcastle sold N’Zogbia in January of 2009 for £6M plus Ryan Taylor, so say that’s £7M.
Why Newcastle are now balking at the reported £9M price tag is a little disconcerting, but we suppose it’s because that’s a high fee for a player who has just one year left on his contract.
But if Newcastle want to bring in some additional good players this summer, there are times when a good player costs a decent fee, and you can only bring in so many free agents.
We think that’s the case with N’Zogbia, but the chances of Newcastle getting Charles back on Tyneside appear to be dimming, even though Charles is said to want a return back to the Magpies.
What do you think?
Comments always welcome.
