Do Newcastle Really Need Another Striker?

Newcastle have not been successful in bringing either Kevin Gameiro or Mevlut Erdinc to Tyneside this summer.

Leon Best – deserves another season to prove himself?

There may still be a chance to get Erdinc on Tyneside yet, but the chances do not appear to be  too good.

But Newcastle did get free agent Demba Ba  in, and now Newcastle have Ba, Ameobi, Best and Lovenkrands as strikers, assuming that  Nile Ranger is on his way to Blackpool.

Local lad Amble-born Phil Airey is one young striker who may also be in the first team squad this season, if he is not sent out on loan.

With the play of Leon Best this year, in which he scored 6 good goals in 12 appearances for Newcastle, and looked to be improving, we think if Newcastle could keep Best next seaosn at the club, those strikers would be good enough for Newcastle next season.

That’s especially true given that Alan Pardew will play the great Ben Arfa as a withdrawn striker in quite a few of the games, a position that Kevin Nolan played in the last couple of seasons.

Knowing that Pardew was going to play Ben Arfa in that position was probably why captain Kevin Nolan skipped Tyneside last month,  after talking so much about how great things were at Newcastle.

It was a shock that Kevin even moved to a second division side, even though he still had two years left on a £50K/week contract at Newcastle, and he could have become a free agent after those two years at the club.

We think Kevin put two and two together and realized his place in the side was in all likelihood under threat next season, and we probably right about that too.

So while we wouldn’t mind seeing another top striker brought in, if  Leon Best stays at Newcastle, we look to be well equipped in the striker department.

What do you think?

And here’s a poll to see if readers think Leon Best deserves another season at Newcastle.

Does Leon Best Deserve One More Season To Prove Himself At Newcastle?

  • Yes (79%, 2,297 Votes)
  • No (15%, 430 Votes)
  • Not Sure (6%, 167 Votes)

With the news that Swansea have made a bid for Routledge, do you think this means that there will be some sort of player exchange to get Taylor in?

We need another proven goal scorer.

The options we have are not good enough.

At the minute Ba is first choice striker, but he will be off to African Cup of Nations.

Looks like Ranger is off to Blackpool.

Best is a good squad player, but not a starting XI man.

McLoven is a brilliant squad player.

Strolla is just Strolla, and thats not great.

Xisco is prob going back to Spain again.

Airey is a bit green yet, but the future looks bright.

Well, no idea for Best. Nothing new about Erding in France. COncerning Nolan, it was impossible to tell that in public, but i think the staff have pushed him away for technicals reasons.
For he would have been in direct competition with Ben arfa, and considering is charisma and his influence in the dress room, leave him on the bench and Ben arfa on the pitch, would have been impossible to manage.

Ba and Best will be our best front two at the moment (if we play 4-4-2, or another 2 up front formation). Despite what he’s done for the club, Shola needs to be sold, along with Lovenkrands (too old) and Ranger (poor attitude).

3 of our strikers scored 6 goals each,

Loan out Ranger (I just think if he gets weekafterweek starting games he will do great)

Out of the 3 id Keep Best he is a typical Poacher, little bit lazy that he doesnt work enough upfront but we need someone like that sometimes to come off bench and grab a goal.
So atm there would be only Ba upfront, he COULD have knee problems so we need ATLEAST 1 striker, But i would buy 2 tbh one striker like Anthoney Ujah who would be cheap/young and then a player you know who will be a starter like Seydou Doumbia.

Sorry; know that Naylor query was off-topic but it suddenly popped into my head! Re this topic, I think we definitely need at least one more striker in, who won’t be away at the CONCAF (or whatever it is called!) but who also has some history of scoring goals in a very competitive league.

Could do with one that can make chances too, not just expect to be played into positions where he can easily score.

keep best and lovenkrands as back up, have ba and player x as our two main strikers, send airey out on loan, no club needs more than 5 strikers

People on here take a small piece of data – i.e. Ba and Best’s good form over a tiny handful of games and then say ‘clear out the rest’. That’s a fair gamble over a long season. You need to stop fantasising about the goals players will score based on a few games last year, why not keep loven and shola as cover?

Iit sounded like Pardew was going to tell Best he wasn’t wanted,,, which I agree is pretty harsh considering his goals last season – of course he should stay.

we will play 4231 most of the season with hba behind the striker n tiote n cabaye behind him, but for tougher oppostion i think it will b cabaye behind the striker with barton n tiote behind him with hba on the wing, depending on opponents ba or erding say starting with formation changing to 442 with subs ie best

BA will be injured before 10 games are done – I’m convinced of it. Not necessarily his knee.
Shola can stand in – another 3 games max.
Then it’s all down to Airey – who I reckon could be pretty good.

But yes, we need another striker.

  • Ofcourse we need some new strikers, we needed an extra striker in January even before Carroll was sold.
Do this regime not learn from injuries, suspensions, playing cup games etc. that we need options and strength in depth.

its because best n ba scored 6 in 10 n 7 in 12 were as loven n shola scored like 6 in 20, best n ba r more clinical finishes

davybtoon – it’s called preparing for the worst, and he does have an ongoing issue whether you like it or not. No one said don’t sign him, no one said don’t play him,,, but ABSOLUTELY prepare for the possibility he will miss games through injury, and the African Cup.

About your comment on Ben Arfa in the last post, i must add, i think he will be really more regular now.

But indeed he wasn’t in the past. My belief he have changed is based on some technicals observations.

@davybtoon we have tried 4-5-1 with Strolla as a lone striker and it ain’t pretty; put you would rather keep him over Mcloven even though a 4-4-3, 4-2-3-1 or 4-6-0 what ever you called it, suites him better (not to mention his a better player). Best might deserve another chance, but I just don’t se have he fits in a 4-4-3 formation let alone as a striker partner for Ba? We need someone with speed next to Ba. If we sell Best now we might even get £ 3-4 mil.

davybtoon – I think saying ‘you won’t be included in the match day squad is tantamount to being told you’re not wanted’… and exactly you are referring to a tiny bit of data – 12 games each… it’s nowhere near enough to say let’s get rid of the proven cover. Can you not even imagine for a minute that one or both doesn’t continue that goalscoring form?

    @boater

Look this shot against Twente 2 years ago (pay particular attention to his right arm):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voaRTjI2_1s

And now this one against Norway one month before he score against Everton (look his right arm again).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTJz-gTsApY

His technical improvement his obvious. According to some informations, he have begin to work really hard during the winter of his last season with Marseille. Now look the final of “la coupe de la ligue”. Look his shot at 1:10 of the vid. YOu see his arm? He was working on that at the time.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQF1q1na_-s

So from december 2009 to august 2010, in a 9 month span, he have totaly changed his shot’s technic. Which is quiet impressive.
If you link that to report saying he now make 15 to 20 min of shot training each day, it will give you an idea of how he’s working hard now.
