Our poll is showing that the majority of Newcastle fans are satisfied with Newcastle’s transfer business so far.
The poll was published back on July 5th, and if you haven’t voted yet the above poll will show up asking for your vote – and for those who have voted the results will be shown.
The poll shows that 54% of the votes – and one reader had one vote – were satisfied, 33% were not satisfied, and 13% were unsure, which is not surprising since there is still over 7 weeks to go before the transfer window closes.
For the record, here is the business that has been done so far, and at the time the poll was published last week, and all incoming deals were completed by June 18th.
Sol Campbell – released
Shefki Kuqi – released
Kevin Nolan – £4.5M – West Ham
Yohan Cabaye – £4.5M – Lille
Demba Ba – free agent – West Ham
Sylvain Marveaux – free agent – Rennes
Mehdi Abeid – free agent – Lens
Basically, one way to looks at it is that Newcastle have a net zero transfer fee outlay in the transfer market so far, and have brought in Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux and 18 year-old Mehdi Abeid.
It’s very clear that Mike Ashley likes a good deal, and every summer we will see some free agents coming to the club.
But we have yet to see a player come to Newcastle this summer for a sizable fee – something approaching double figures – although Newcastle were reported to have bid £10M for top target Kevin Gameiro of Lorient, who ended up at PSG.
It looks like Newcastle have missed out on Turkish striker target Mevlut Erdinc, and it seems that players who could still come in are Neil Taylor of Swansea, and there is an outside chance Newcastle could bring back former winger Charles N’Zogbia.
But Newcastle are not linked with too many players at the moment, although there has been a link with St. Etienne defensive midfielder Blaise Matuidi, but his release clause is set at £14M – which seems a little high.
Players who could still leave Newcastle this summer include Wayne Routledge, who is linked with both top Welsh clubs Swansea and Cardiff today, after being linked with Nottingham Forest last Friday.
Nile Ranger is today linked with Blackpool, and Alan Smith may leave, but his wages (£60K/week), may be a problem for him ending up at Leeds United.
Jose Enrique, who’s part of that long running soap opera could still leave, and there is a chance Newcastle will try to unload Joey Barton this summer too.
If there is any way Newcastle can unload Xisco to his former Spanish club Deportivo – they will jump at the chance – since the lad is still getting an amazing £50K/week from Newcastle.
We’ll leave the poll open – so if you haven’t yet voted – now’s your chance.
