Whelan Wants £20M For N’Zogbia – What’s He Smoking?

Wigan and former Newcastle left winger Charles N’Zogbia has one year left on his contract, and could leave next summer for nothing. as a free agent.

Charles N’Zogbia – £20 or £30M for this player?

So would you think Wigan Chairman and owner, Dave Whelan, who initially slapped a fee of £9M on the player, which scared away both Newcastle and Sunderland, would even increase the fee?

Well, that seems to be exactly what he has done, with his comments to The Sun today.

This is what Dave said:

“I see some players being sold for £20m or £30m and Zoggy’s better.

“We’ve had bids but they’re nowhere near our valuation.”

The reason the bids are low is that Charles may well stay put, and see out his last year at Wigan, and then arrange a bumper deal as a free agent next summer.

And if  Whelan continues wanting a daft fee for Charles, then N’Zogbia may well do just that and Wigan will get nothing for him.

Liverpool and Aston Villa are the latest clubs to be interested in the French International, but they are not silly enough to pay way over the odds for the player – well we don’t think they are.

If Wigan do keep up this behavior, Charles could definitely stay, and then some clubs would try to get him in the January transfer window for a further reduced fee.

But of course the longer he stays at the Latics, the less Wigan will get for him, which is why Whelan will probably come to his sense before or on August 31st, when the transfer window slams shut.

But at the moment think of this as simply Dave trying to drive up the transfer price of Charles, just as high as he can.

Comments always welcome.

i can see Whelan’s point about players being sold for 20M Henderson and nzog is a far better player but he has 1 year left and he must be of his head thinking he is going to get that sort of money for him

Whelan is probably trying to maximise profits given the inflated transfer market. Thankfully though, Newcastle United is no longer the silly club it once was.

These days our transfer business makes more economical sense.

The highest price tag for N’zogbia is approx 12mil I reckon.

Wait until next year, unless we can get him at a reasonable price, 7 or 8 million.

Aye it was funny. It wouldnt surprise me if Whelan had been on holiday at the time…

“Dave Whelan takes time out from his holiday in Amsterdam to talk exculsively to the Sun newspaper and demands 20m for Charles Nzogbia”

  • And is there any solid evidence PSG want Anelka, or just rumour?

From what I’ve read, Erdinc and his agent are due “loyalty” (aha) payments if Melvut is still at the club in January.

I would therefore assume that his agent would like any buying club to compensate them for these fees.

Obviously it would be ridiculous to do so. And I’m sure in a short while those demands will be dropped. It doesn’t seem that there is too much interest from any clubs above our level.

Also, Whelan isn’t asking 20-30m for N’Zogbia haha.

But what he is doing, is stating the truth. Carroll, Henderson, Jones… 3 England caps between them, a total of 3 decent seasons between them.

The FA needs to be looking at this, as it’s no wonder we have a lack of exciting young talent. The home grown rules mean the prices for English players are hugely inflated – completely conflicting with what they are actually trying to achieve.

at not one point in that did Whelan say he wanted £20 or £30 million. He said players are going for £20-30million and N’Zogbia’s is better than them. And no bids so far have matched there vaulation, which is £9 million.

Dave Whelan is doing this as a bluff in my opinion to get as much money as possible for hus best player. Not even man city will be stupid enough to fall for this, think he will go this window for a much much lower price.

Whelans wheeze, and we thought MA was bad. This is Whelan’s attempt to make £9 mil look cheap by talking about £20 million or more. It won’t work, Zog is a free agent in Dec’ 11 and can sign pre-contract with anybody and Wigan get Zip. Either take £4 or £5 million now or get nowt . Same as Enrique with us, except we are supposed to have made him a ‘good offer ‘ according to Pards. Wigan obviously need transfer cash – they should have took our knee jerk £12 mil offer in January.

Not really fair to call someone studying at University an arm chair fan 😉

At least Swansea are up this year, which should only take an hour to get to, unlike the usual trips to London :/

Also, anybody know when are Fiorentina tickets available. Seeing as it’s between terms I think I’m going to come up to Newcastle for a couple of days.
