Alan Pardew has reiterated that he is still after at least one new striker for Newcastle this summer.
Alan Pardew – who’s he after now?
Newcastle have already signed free agent Demba Ba, who looked a good striker when he played at West Ham earlier this year, and scored an impressive 7 goals in 13 appearances for the Hammers.
But Newcastle want to add to their fire-power, and this is what Alan told the local Newcastle press corps:
“We are still looking hard for a striker, and we have got our eyes on every striker who is available at the moment.”
“But they have to be the right fit for this club.” “There is a certain genre they have to fit into.”
“And we will be striving for them to fit into that category.”
Well it’s hard to read much into that statement, other than Pardew will be bringing in at least one additional striker this summer.
Newcastle have lost their two top goal-scorers from last season, in Andy Caroll (11 goals) and top scorer Kevin Nolan (12 goals).
But they have already brought in Demba Ba, who could be a big hit on Tyneside, if he can remain fit, and play like he did at West Ham earlier this year.
And Leon Best scored 6 times in 12 appearances earlier this year, and if he is kept on Tyenside, we think he could score quite a few goals for Newcastle next season, although Leon is surprisingly up for sale for around £4M.
At that price he will probably be snapped up by a top Championship side, but in our poll we put up earlier today, 75% believe Best deserves at least one more season at Newcastle to prove himself, and there are already over 1800 readers who have cast their vote.
Newcastle will also have the great Ben Arfa available, and he can score goals too, and Pardew has said he will use him as the second striker, behind Demba Ba.
Yohan Cabaye could become an important player for Newcastle next season, and while at Lille he scored 39 goals in 253 appearances for the French Champions, and also had 35 assists.
The 25 year-old French International could also get some goals next season for the side, hopefully, and he is excellent on free kicks.
Sylvain Marveaux has also been acquired and he scored 20 goals in 118 appearances for Rennes, and will be looking to take the left wing starting position from Argentine International Jonas Gutierrez.
Newcastle have probably missed out on 24 year-old Mevlut Erdinc of PSG, and we assume he will not now be arriving on Tyneside.
And the striker we would like to come to Newcastle is 21 year-old Daniel Sturridge, but it doesn’t seem that Newcastle are keen on him.
Or maybe the Magpies are not too keen on how much he would cost – that may be a more accurate way of putting it.
But to be honest, we have no idea who Newcastle may now be looking at in terms of strikers, but we understand their top target is again from the continent.
Any ideas who he (they) might be?
Comments welcome.

Comment #83@gonz: Agreed. I think it’d be daft to flog Besty off now. I’ve always had faith in the lad and he proved last season that the faith wasn’t misplaced. (Although he does like to be offside a lot.) Given a lucky season without injuries, I reckon he could bag double digits for sure.

Comment #88Pardew could well be looking at Zoggy . Would be great as an out and out striker up front with Ba.
Ashley could well be looking to delay signing Zoggy until the end of August when his price will drop to £6m ; (or down to £2m next Jan).
We brought in Ben Arfa and Tiote at the end of August last year – the best are worth waiting for!

Comment #90@WWJBD Ha! We all know Pardew can talk for England. In regards to the players position – look at who we have been confirmed to have gone for. Gervinho – Gamiero – Erdinc all play as a second striker / RW.

Comment #91Also, contrary to what SSN are saying, I don’t think we are selling Ranger, I think we are loaning him to them for a minimal fee what could be agreed at the end of season. It’s not worth selling Ranger for just 1m. Surely, Ashley isn’t that dumb??? Hahaha, of course he is, but even he’d be an idiot letting him go for that. That kid was a destroyer coming on in the last 15-20 mins and I think he changes the game when he’s on, if he can go down a league and add goals than he could be that number 9 type of player we are desperately after. He’s similar to Judas in the way he plays.

Comment #96Would like to see Papiss Cisse too WWJBD wonder if Ba knows him? I know Carr looked at the Bangura’s but it seems to have gone quiet.
Someone else just posted we’re after M Diouf on twitter, hope not he couldn’t get a game for Blackburn last season.

Comment #97Skysports.com understands that Blackpool have made a bid for Newcastle striker Nile Ranger.
It appears that Blackpool are set to lose DJ Campbell this summer, with QPR thought to want the forward for their return to the Premier League in the forthcoming season.
Ian Holloway is consequently looking for replacements and Ranger, who has played 58 matches for Newcastle, mainly as a substitute, has become a target.
A number of clubs are thought to be tracking the 20-year-old and St James’ Park boss Alan Pardew is ready to sell.
Blackpool are leading the race and have made an offer to their former Premier League rivals ahead of the new season.

Comment #98@joppadoni: I went to the Darlo friendly last season. Be prepared with the old ’empty seats’ chant! Canny atmosphere like, the Toon fans basically lit up the stadium. There was a group of us who couldn’t get in the North Stand sitting with the supporters which was a good laugh. Something about watching two or three toon shirts dancing in a sea of Darlo fans 😀

Comment #99@Thump think that’s why the blog has been quiet lately – the negs are out in full force shouting everyone down together in unison. It was like if the russians had teamed up with the nazi’s in WW2 so it was! (maybe an exageration but it was not a good place to debate as they wouldn’t have a reasones rational debate)

that is the only way we’ll have Sturridge here, big money offer plus Sturridge as part of the deal, then we’ll get Matuidi on his 14m release clause.
Hope that doesn’t happen as I’d rather have Tiote!

Comment #102@Colo2 Reckon we can rule out another African striker – Ba’s going ACN and if Nigeria get a couple of injuries so will Strolla. We’d be screwed in Jan.

Comment #115Van Wolfswinkel went for less than 5m? surprised Carr didnt spot that one!!!!
I know people may scoff at this, but what about Gary Hooper from Celtic??? In his last 3 seasons, admittedly in SPL and Championship, he has scored 72 goals in 131 games. That is a fantastic scoring record, and he’s only 23. Make a bid of £4m, worth a risk.
Knowing Ashley and his love of cheap buys, anyone want to bet against Craig Thomson arriving lol

Comment #119and dickinsonjunior – one of the local papers said that we are not going for Sow. Can’t remember who. Also, about Neil Taylor, admittedly I have not seen the bloke play, but we are talking about signing a guy who cost £150,000 a year ago and has played 30 matches in the Championship? I am not sure whether 1m is a good deal; admittedly we need a left back though.

Comment #120Andy – yeh, the guy who was caught on the internet with two girls aged 12 and 14. Signing him wouldnt be half awkward! Then again, we had Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate, Andy Carroll, Joey Barton… the list is endless really 🙂
