Alan Pardew has given his support to Joey Barton today, by giving him the captaincy for Friday’s friendly game at Darlington.
Joey Barton – blow with his Visa
That’s an excellent gesture by Pardew, and very good man management too.
As we found out this morning, Barton will not travel to the United States on Sunday for the American tour, as he didn’t get a Visa, and Joey must be feeling a little down at the moment.
Add to that Joey’s uncertain future at Newcastle, and things don’t loook too good for the Liverpudlian right now.
But it’s an excllent move by the manager, as he lets Joey know he is still an important player to Newcastle – which of course he certainly is.
New Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini will not play at the Darlington Arena, as Pardew will try to give as many players as possible a game in pre-season.
And new signing Sylvain Marveaux is also set to miss out on Friday night, and that will be a worry, given the Frenchman never played for Rennes since last October.
And midfielder Cheick Tiote is also set to miss the game.
This is what Pardew told the local Newcastle press today:
“Joey will play at Darlington and captain the side” “Colo will not play. He does not need to play this early, and Sylvain Marveaux will not play, either. He is not ready.”
“Cheick will not play – he is playing catch-up a little bit with his fitness.” “Joey is still suffering from past misdemeanors.”
“He has put his life back on track, and long may that continue.” “I have no problem with integrating Joey into the team without him coming to the United States.
“There is no problem. He will go to Holland with the development group, and do the work there.”
And as we reported earlier today, Barton has apologised to the Newcastle fans for his lack of involvement, but it was always going to be the case that he would not get his Visa, because of the jail time he served three years ago.
Giving Joey the captaincy on Friday begs the question as to whether Joey will be the Newcastle vice-captain this coming season, as he was under Alan Pardew this year, and captained the side at Aston Villa in Nolan’s absence, as we recall.
And Newcastle will start their tour when the US is going through a heat spell, mostly in the east and south of the country.
And here in Raleigh yesterday, we hit 101 degrees Fahrenheit and today will also be over 100, and we have had several weeks with the temperature every day above 90 degrees F, with the lows around 75 F.
Good job the lads are playing in the evenings, although the heat and humidity is still around at those times.
Comments welcome.

Comment #46Great tactic sending Joey to Holland with the kids. He’s a kind of warning and a role model all at once. Hopefully he can mentor some of the young lads and show them what not to do with all the money and attention being a young pro gets you. Good luck to you Joey.

Comment #61He’s not played for a while Andy and probably just needs to get up to fitness.
Also, we have enough players to get out there for him to not be rushed.

Comment #62True ollieh it’s just a bit a bit of a concern of mine that he’ll be another Ben Arfa in the sense the club will say he’s ready he’s not he’s ready he’s not. He’s training so don’t think we’ll have that problem. Silver lining of barton out of us tour is it gives cabaye the chance to gel with tiote and maybe vuckic to push for first team squad

Comment #64why do apardew’s words fill me with dread
Asked if there had been any more progress in the transfer market, Pardew told the Gazette: “We’re looking at getting one or two more players in before the window closes, but we’ve also got a big squad.
“We need to move one or two on – that’s where we are.

Comment #67Marveaux is just bit behind on his fitness because he was out for the second half of last season he never got back up to speed completely so he’s just taking a bit longer to regain it apparently, or so I’ve been told

Comment #70I get that sometimes. Usually a dodgy kebab sets it off. I may be being completely optimistic here but pardew said in his interview that he was looking to get in 1 or 2 to challenge/be first team on the radio. He also said we were looking at some development players. So if come the end of the window the development players brought in were mcgugan and n.taylor and attacking players were zog (if we are after him) and erding and we got rid of routledge and smith i’d be pretty pleased with the window

Comment #71yes I gathered that its the words big squad that troubles me, on the second of September it will become thin again, just hope we never go down the path of dad’s army again, once we get a good squad we should bring down the age to 18-22 and stay clear of cast offs

Jul 13, 2011 at 3:56 PM
Comment #72i would imagine so, if we can shift xisco and smith somehow thats 110k a week! add to that routledge, perch and ranger and you’re probably looking at 150k a week or 7.8m a year for players who arent even going to play
