Joey Barton put Newcastle 1-0 up after just three minutes tonight in the friendly game at Darlington.
But then in the second half, when Sammy Ameobi made it 2-0, a pitch invasion delayed the game in tonight’s “friendly” match between Darlington and Newcastle United.
The friendly attracted almost 10,000 fans, with 7000 of them making the trip down from Newcastle.
The visiting fans ran on to the pitch after Ameobi scored, and while the celebrations were initially without trouble, violence then broke out and the referee threatened to abandon the game.
The Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was forced to make an appeal to the Geordie fans to calm down, and the game was then restarted.
More later.

Comment #51I was at the match and I was quite embarrased… I suppose they followed up from us singing “if Sammy scores, we’re on the pitch”… Even pardew came over asking us to back up a bit…. I was also worried at what the new players would think of us!… Ben arfa looked a bit rusty but that’s expected…. Cabayes balls and vision was world class… Also abheid looked very impressive not to mention Sammy ameobi!

Comment #59Hah… The Daily Mail are reporting he was physically attacked and near enough every fan who saw it is kicking off about it. Good times.
According to Scott Wilson, Fergie has been sent for an X-Ray, so he’s definitely out of the US tour – need a new LB.

No it is out nationwide, best potter film yet.
Good to see us getting off to a good start, clean sheet, young players played and a chance for new players to show what they can do. I know it was just against Darlington, but you can only beat what’s in front of you. Let’s hope the USA tour goes well and we are ready for the start of the season.

And to make bad night worse Guthrie and Ferguson both picked up injuries that’ll keep them out of US tour. Ferguson sent for immediate X-ray

Comment #68boater – I know it’s bad of me to bash on Ameobi but I am afraid I can’t help it he’s just soooo bad! He reminds me of Bramble but worse of all we rely on him to score goals for us. He just keeps getting in the way of us signing a proper striker and makes me cringe to see his name make either the bench or another miraculous starting spot! If this upcoming season he makes more appearance than Best, Ba or even Lovenkrands I would be surprised and hugely disappointed.

NUFCThreatLevel is talking about the FA hitting us with a points deduction or something?

Comment #72@Hitman: already been cleared up. He cites The Daily Mail as a source while the Telegraph and near every other fan who saw it explained what happened. He walked into the wrong door (next to the ticket office) and got some abuse. Probably a bit of chanting – that’s all.

Comment #74WWJBD – Thanks m8 awful news for both the youngster and NUFC. He was on most of our play tonight from what I hear, a huge loss to the team. It also shows how we lack in depth on our left side. We need signings and quick!!

Jul 15, 2011 at 11:08 PM
Comment #75Wouldn’t say we lack depth on the left of mid but lb i agree. LM we have jonas marveaux who usually play there and vuckic and hba can also play there if needs be. LB we defo need cover

Comment #76@JP: Depth isn’t the problem, it’s quality. If Jose is injured/is sold and the injury to Fergie is a bad one, we’re basically stuck with Perch at LB to start the season…
