The Newcastle squad will fly out on Sunday for their three game American tour.
Alan Pardew – we’ll break even on tour
Newcastle will play MLS sides Sporting Kansas City and Columbus Crew and then third division side Orlando City, who are all in the middle of their season, and should give the lads three good games.
That will get the team ready for the Premier League start against Arsenal on August 13th.
As we all know one of Newcastle’s best players, Joey Barton, will not be on the trip unfortunately, because he was unable to get a Visa.
Alan talked about the US tour:
“It is not a money-making exercise by any stretch of imagination,” said Pardew. “It is purely a break-even tour, which we feel is beneficial for the team.”
“We go there because the facilities will be first class. It is going to be hot, so it will test us.” “My experience tells me that for the first game of the season it will be 90 degrees at St James’ Park, so experiencing similar conditions will be good.”
“The training ground and facilities are top drawer. The competition is mid-season and I think the games are going to be tough, and that is just what we need.”
“And when you say a lot of travelling, I think there are a couple of internal flights of about four hours but, you know, when you look at some of the trips of other Premier League teams, we are dwarfed by the distances they have gone.”
“You know, those Asia trips… God knows where else.”
And on missing Joey Barton on the trip, who seems to be a big favorite of Pardew’s, the manager had this to say:
“Ideally you want to take all your players, but I do not think it is going to be a major problem for Joey to go to Holland and then to integrate with us. No problems.”
Newcastle got off to a good start in pre-season last night, with a 2-0 win tonight, and in the first half the side played extremely well, before Alan made 11 changes after Newcastle went 2-0 up after 55 minutes.
The game then lost momentum and died a bit of a death.
