It’s an open question as the whether 25 year-old local lad Steven Taylor can get his first team place back in the Newcastle side.
Steven Taylor – can he regain first team place?
Last season it was Mike Williamson who was preferred buy both Chris Hughton and Alan Pardew, as Mike has played consistently well since he was signed for £1M from Portsmouth a short 18 months ago.
But when Steven got his chance in the last three games of the season, when Mike broke his arm in training no less, he took the chance with both feet and scored in each one of those last three games, and also played very solidly at the back.
And if he cannot get in at center-back maybe he can challenge Danny Simpson for the right back position, as we somehow need Steven’s goal-scoring prowess from set pieces in the side, somehow.
Taylor told the local Newcastle press:
“At Carlisle a year ago was my first game back from a knee injury in the January before.” “I headed the ball for a corner and landed on my shoulder.”
“It was so frustrating, but that’s behind me now, it’s history.” “I’m fit now, and just looking forward to the first game. That’s the main thing.”
Taylor was playing so well and enjoying the game so much that he hardly wanted the season to end, but it did, and now he will have a monumental task to regain his first team place at his local club.
The boy who was was raised by Geordie parents in Whitley Bay continued:
“Last season could have gone on longer – I didn’t want it to end.” “It was good to end the season in the team, but we were disappointed to draw the last game.”
“The main thing is that we’re looking forward to the new season.” “I’ve put my injuries behind me, and I just want to help the team this season.”
“Everyone’s looking forward to getting back out there for the Darlington game.” “There’s a great spirit among the lads, and we just want to get started.”
“When I first started doing pre-seasons, some players would let themselves go over the summer, but that doesn’t happen now.” “Players look after themselves in the summer, and that’s so important.
“They make sure they come back in good condition.” “If you keep yourself in good shape, it doesn’t take you so long to get back to full fitness.”
We would have liked some defensive reinforcements brought in during the summer, but if Tamas Kadar, Shane Ferguson and James Tavernier can press hard for a first team place in the back four, Newcastle should do okay this coming season at the back.
For the record, Steven has played 187 times for Newcastle with 13 goals, since making his first team debut in late March of 2004, when just 18, in the UEFA Cup Fourth Round second leg tie against RCD Mallorca.
What do you think?

Comment #41Nufctv you have to be a member, i just got it for a month to get highlight of the preseason and for the us tour/new signing interviews(hopefully) Its worth the money so far seems decent. Tom_toon… I used to think williamson was better than saylor but i have changed my mind. hes always in the way to block shots (sometimes with his hand lol) his tackling was spot on and when hes playing cb he dosent back off as much as he does when he plays rb, hes very good at scoring aswel (used to be a striker)impressed me last few games was back to his best of a few years ago.

Comment #43If Saylor could keep up his form from last season (3 games 3 goals) then He’ll be our top scorer this season with 38 goals. 🙂

Comment #48Just to add to my earlier post. Not saying that Willo did anything wrong like. He is still one of the best pound for pound signings I’ve ever seen the toon make. Certainly when you compare him to the likes of Boumsong and Marcellino. Just think ST edges it that little bit with ability.

Comment #4909nufc09, I got into contact with nufc.co.uk about 2 months ago about whether I could receive NUFCTV in Germany. I never heard anything from them. I suppose that’s a “no”.

Comment #51Rather keep Tiote than have Sturridge. What exactly has h done to warrant even a £10mil transfer fee. Thr guy had a good 6 months, well done to him. Doesn’t make him worth that money. And he a twat by most accounts, a mercenary who will leave us if he gets a shot at a bigger club.

Comment #53When will Mike Ashley get a decent hearing on this blog. He is the best owner we have has for decades. H e invests the money in the infrastructure of the club and is not interested in star players or paying mega wages. A great owner who is not appreciated because he will not waste his money on stars and crocks.

Comment #56Tom_Toon, I watched Chelsea – Portsmouth today and wasn’t that impressed by Sturridge.
I was thinking about online but I’d be really peed if it’s the same quality as some of the (naughty) links where we watch games now. And then for how much? £40 a month?

Comment #57Mike will not spend 10 million on a player because he thinks its a waste of money. Let the Stokes and Sunderlands of this world go bust. We will overtake them eventually through careful husbandry.

Comment #64Gg… I think you should be able to, you pay i think its £4 a month or cheaper if you buy it for the year. Its good so far loads of interviews and some training stuff and highlights, wastes some time when theres no live football on.
Tom_toon… Best striker i seen at sjp last season and was the only player i seen at sjp to beat jose in a one on one, unbelievable bit of skill, jose had him in his back pocket after that like lol
