The Daily Mirror is reporting that Newcastle and Everton will battle it out to sign Reading striker Shane Long for around £7M.
Shane Long – are Newcastle interested?
But there’s never been much evidence that Newcastle are interested in the 24 year-old Irish International striker, so we wonder how much truth is in this report.
However, it does look like Newcastle’s £7.5M bid for PSG Turkish striker Mevlut Erdinc will not ultimately be successful, and presumably Newcastle will now look to other potential strikers, who are available.
The news is that Reading manager Brian McDermott, a good friend of Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, has alerted both clubs that Shane Long will probably be sold to a Premier League club before the season starts on August 13th.
McDermott said that he would have to reluctantly accept the 24-year-old having to leave Reading if a decent deal could be worked out that was good for both the club and the player.
McDermott said:
“Shane is the best striker in the Championship. He could play for anyone in the Premier League,”
Shane is a goal poacher type of striker, and perhaps could play well alongside big Demba Ba, Newcastle’s new signing, and Shane has 21 caps for Ireland with 6 International goals.
Shane has been at Reading since 2005, and last season scored a good 25 goals in 50 appearances for the Royals, but we’re still not sure if Newcastle are really interested in this player.
What do you think?

Comment #1If we’re going after him, we should be offering player+cash, especially if we’re planning to play one up (with HBA in behind).
Ameobi and Lovenkrands are both championship proven and could be counted as about 1-2m each surely?
Ranger is clearly a bad influence and not wanted, could be offered at 1.5-2m?
Even Best might be worth offering, although I’d rather see him stay.

Comment #5We will buy another striker. But patience is the game. Ma doesn’t want to give the impression we need one as the price will then go up. Reckon we will spend 7 mil.

Comment #6I like him. I think he has very good movement and has a great work rate. Think he’d score goals given the chance and i would be happy if we brought him in. Last game he played was for ireland when he played dircetly against giorgio chielleni – one of the best cbs in the world. He gave him the run around and chielleni didn’t know what was going on. Think he could be a top player

Comment #13the problem is that all these toon transfer rumours are based on the supposition that we intend to spend any money, which we don’t.
Don’t get your hopes up for a little fishy on a little dishy anytime soon lads n lasses, the boat isn’t coming in, and to be honest your daddy is out betting the fish he caught at the local casino anyway… if you knaa what I mean.

Comment #14He’s got the same work rate as Kevin Doyle who is another good player imo. To have a guy who just runs himself into the floor for the team is a great thing to have. Especially from the front as it sets the tone for the rest of the team. I like the idea of this. And ToonChris i think a lot of people are feeling the same as you mate

I had to work the other night when we played at Darlo and couldn’t make it down unfortunately. Still haven’t really heard/read anyone who was at the game’s comments on how good our new lads (plus Gosling and Benny) individually performed on the night.
The news rags have just concentrated on the idiots who ran on the pitch and missed the point of commenting on the match as far as I can see.
Any player ratings or stand out things they did worth mentioning? Really interested to get some opinions.
Btw cheers to all the USELESS local media who decided it wasn’t even worth commentating on. Pathetic
7000+ fans made it to the game and u think nobody would be interested enuff? U should be embarrassed.
Cheers in advance 4 any input lads!

Comment #20I’d say long is just behind doyle as it stands as Doyle has ‘PL experience’ that people bang on about but i have no doubt given a run of games in the prem long could prove to be a top player. All irish strikers seem the same don’t they? Keane, Doyle and Long. All v similar. Best doesn’t count as he was born in notts!

Comment #34I don’t rate him v highly FF. Watched a lot of Celtic games last season as they’re my second team and he doesn’t come for anything. He doesn’t command his box and he is very slow to get down to the ball. Think TK and SH are better than him

Comment #40Toonchris – true, harps has earned his playing time these days, but can we expect Krul – with 2 full dutch caps to his name to sit around and wait a year on sentimental grounds for the shirt back?
I feel for harper but krul is the future and it would be stupid to put his face out of joint … just to give harper his day in the sun.. tough one.
