We’ve seen the stories about Newcastle possibly going head to head with Liverpool for Daniel Sturridge.
Daniel Sturridge – £20M or a possible loan deal
But with Newcastle having been quoted a fee of £20M for the player, there’s just no way Newcastle will try to sign Sturridge permanently.
The best and only chance Newcastle have is to get Daniel on Tyneside on a season-long loan deal, and in the Sunday Sun a couple of days ago, there was news that Newcastle are interested in doing just that.
Apparently Alan Pardew is very keen on Sturridge, but the move has not been sanctioned by Mike Ashley and Derek LLambias, because the 21 year-old is just too expensive, as is Charles N’Zogbia too.
The Newcastle philosophy is to bring players in while still young, and develop them into £20M stars, rather than having to pay that amount for the finished product.
It seems that Sturridge has to prove himself on Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia, and the new manager Villas-Boas has given the England U21 international a chance to show what he can do for Chelsea.
This is what the new Chelsea manager told the Sun:
“This is one of the decisions we have to take,” ” Daniel is a very, very interesting player with a tremendous future and is highly regarded by myself.”
“I have 15 days in Asia to make the best decision and I need those four games to continue to assess.”
Since Newcastle haven’t spent any of the Andy Carroll money on transfer fees, you would have thought Newcastle could afford the £20M to buy Daniel outright, but that’s not the news coming from inside the club.
The £35M has been invested in players’ wages over the length of time of their contracts, and according to some at Newcastle, the £35M has already been spent. The wages include the new contract given to Cheick Tiote, and the new players coming into the club thus summer.
We really hate to be the bringer of bad news, but the truth is there’s no way the Newcastle regime will pay out £20M for Sturridge.
Like it or hate it – that’s the way it is at Newcastle.
The only way the Magpies can get the lad on Tyneside, is if they can negotiate a loan deal with the London club.
And it seems that Liverpool could do a deal, if Chelsea are willing to sell, so look for a £25M bid from Liverpool, if the 21 year-old becomes available.
Comments welcome.

He looks better than Long @7M.
As good as Carroll – 35M?
Are a stadium full of the best fans in the world, paying their hard earned cash, going to have to endure Best/Shola & Lovenkrands for another season?
We watched some toothless but brave performances last year. If it wasn’t for the squad’s fight, we’d have been in serious trouble, because our strikers were rubbish.
Get some money spent, cheapskates.
Things could get really ugly fast if they don’t splash the cash.

Comment #82@Boater: Pick up injured and free and hope to survive??? We have added Cabaye, Marveaux, Ba, Abeid and have Ben Arfa and Gosling back from injury to improve last season’s efforts. I would put my house on us signing a striker before the end of the window. Personally I would be very happy with that.
You say we should spend money like every other club. At the moment, other than Man Utd I can’t think of one other team who has spent more than about £5m net up until now. I’m tempted to say grow up and stop wailing!

Comment #83I think we have to get used to the fact that as long as Fat Tw*t & Lamears* are in charge we will no longer be big players in the transfer market (apart from as sellers that is). We will be looking to buy young cheap & probably foreign players and sell them at huge (hopefully) profits. We will not be challenging for any trophies and will have to become content to be mid-table at best. I hate to say this but I thin k the sh*te down the road have better owners than us and are prepared to spend to speculate. I am not looking forward to the start of the season as I think it will be a very frustrating one. I don’t expect us to get relegated but I can see us finishing below the sh*te.

Comment #85Seeing as we are playing with a lone striker, Andy Carroll would have never fit into our system. If you look at the top lone strikers in the league, ie Tevez, Drogba, van Persie, Torress, they have one thing Andy Carroll will never have – technique and the ability to beat a man. Being a target man and holding up the ball and scoring off crosses is not enough in the 4231 formation, and I just dont think Andy Carroll has the basic skill and flair required to do anything more than that. That’s why he needs a pacy strike partner to feed off his knock downs. We need a striker who can drop deep or pull wide to allow our wingers and midfielders to run in towards goal, kinda like what Thierry Henry/Bergkamp did at arsenal.

Well maybe so but there are other top players knocking around. Erding will cost under 10 mill which imo is a joke if thats all we bring in.
If we get him we should still get one of the Bangura’s, a RW, a CB, 1LB, 1 RB and maybe a McGugan/Martin as well
In my eyes there is no excuse for not spending the unforeseen windfall

Comment #87I hate it when clubs with money such as Spurs and Man City stump up millions for players and then when something better comes along they just treat them like crap and dont wanna know about them. Given, Bassong, Adebyor to name a few. At least we have never done that.

Comment #89OttersPocket – Did you read the .org article on how ashley has made 45mil on transfers since he came? The only club in england to be in the black in transfer dealings over the past 2 years.. not bad considering we have the 3rd biggest club and 5th highest revenue in the country, and have still spent less than swansea and West brom on transfers, but no you don’t care do you cos you heard we have fiscal health and oh yeah you seen a 2 minute montage of marveaux before he was out for a year and he looked MINT.

We already have BA and Ben Arfa to play those roles in the new formation, and they have said time and time again another striker will come in so the likes of Best/Shola/Lov will be 3rd choice at best.
Things get ugly? Only if they keep selling tickets to the morons who showed us up on Friday.

Comment #95When players return from long injuries they always pick up further injuries so to expect HBA,SM and DG to play a full season is very unreasonable. They will all have to be looked after during the season so to place this high pressure on HBA is unfair.

Comment #96Felipe – as if to prove my point – you run out a list of injured and free- with the exception of Cabaye – a direct replacement for nolan.
there’s nowt we can do about ashley’s transfer – or lack of- dealings, but reading the apologists on here trying to make out everything’s wonderful and no need to touch the 35mil, based on a fantasy impression of player’s suitability, ability and fitness is wishful thinking of the perilous kind.

Comment #99Very interesting reading on here today lads! Constructive without insults flying about too! ha ha
I can see both sides of the argument, Id love nothing more than spending big on a Sturridge type player, but as rightly as been pointed out, He is raw and in the current market, at 20m, massively inflated!
People seem to judge our new signings as not marquee signings as they simply havent seen them play. Very easy to do.
The fact is we have been spoilt by huge money signings over the past 15 years or so and have come to expect it. With the economic climate and the fact we havent competed at any level for any trophies, it would be silly to spend a huge fee on a player who represents a gamble. All signings represent a gamble.
The truth is, not one of us here knows how bad our finances were prior to Ashley taking over. What has let him down is misleading comments from Llambias and Pardew on how the money will be spent.
Personally, I feel Sturridge would be an excellent signing and has that arrogance and potential ability to wear the number 9. But not at the 20m price tag.
Season long loan with a view to a 10-12m fee would be my suggestion.

Comment #100What i keep thinking is this;
MA AP say money reinvested to cover fees wages of contracts etc – so is that for year 1 of their contract or for the duration of the contract?
If duration of contract what will be happening to the income from the next 4 seasons i.e. Sky monet, season tkts, merchandise, sponsorships etc??
if the £35m is swallowed up in wages then all this known future income is going where exactly, as no according to AP none will then be needed for the new signings made so far!!! winge over – get out MA – your a disease!!

Again, the amount spent/received does not bother me, I dont base my opinions on that. We now (in my opinion) have a better team than what we had 2/3/4 years ago, the fact in that time we have received more money than we have spent makes no relevance.
I have not seen much of Marveaux, I will judge him when I see him from what I have read he seems to be a decent prospect, but I dont judge players on You Tube clips.

I am pretty sure Ba will score 15+ next season if he doesnt got that knee injury. But I think Best can score around 10 goals next season if gets some playing time, he looked class last season. Lovenkrands can score around 5 goals from the bench and is a good squad player. But Ameobi is crap and I hope he will be sold! If Ranger get a well pre-season and scores some goals I think he can be aviable to score some goals too in the next season. But we should replace Ameobi with some real power, and at the moment I think DJ Campbell is the best who we can clicnh a deal with, cause we will never get some like Sturridge under MA belt!

Comment #107@boater: A quick look at the nufc.com website tells me that not counting the Carroll sale he has spent £3m more than he’s taken in. That, even considering we got relegated and had to drastically cut the running costs (I assume you understand that to be true!). Ok, so now we are sitting on about £30m (not taking into account that we have lost money after a season in the championship) and we still have nearly 7 weeks to go to spend whatever it is we have budgeted out of what is left. What’s so terrible about that. Can I assume that your wage packet doesn’t last you to the end of the week/month? If you’d just gone through bad times and suddenly came into some money would you blow it all before you’d earned your first interest payment?

Comment #109here is a question for people.
Sturridge and say, Erding, both available. Both regarded as pacy players with eye for goal. Who would you sign??
Sturridge at 20m or Erding at 7m? you know for a fact people will say sturridge cos they have seen him play! Scouts are paid huge sums of money to judge a players value and if Graeme Carr thinks erding or anyone else is better value than Sturridge, ill trust him.
This isnt football manager for those saying lets sign “Bangura” – really? how many folk watch the swedish premier league or wherever he plays?!

I have not specifically said I dont want Sturridge, what im saying is, If Graeme Carr feels another striker suits us better than I will trust his judgement.
If we bring Sturridge in then thats fine by me, he will do a decent job, however I dont feel he is the 15/20 goal a season striker many feel he is.

Comment #118@boater88: I don’t care what they cost as long as they improve on what we had last year. I happen to trust Graham Carr’s opinion of a footballer more than yours mate, no offence. I therefore assume that Marveaux, Cabaye and Abeid have done that until proven otherwise. From what I’ve seen of Ba he improves the squad. I don’t expect us to qualify for the CL this season whether we throw £20m+ away on a marquee signing or not so long as we improve on last season and push for a Europa spot and/or a cup then I’ll be very happy.

The Bangura’s are both very highly rated and imo I would want one of them as a back up player not a full started yet.
Also the same could be said of Tiote who was mainly a bench warmer in a fairly low quality league
