No Time To Rest On Your Laurels At Big Club Like Newcastle

We are still hoping a miracle can still happen, and Joey Barton gets offered a new contract at Newcastle either this summer, in January,  or even next summer, when he could become a free agent.

A pop star? – no it’s Joey Barton with his new haircut

But there’s no doubt about it, this could be 28 year-old Joey Barton’s fifth and final season on Tyneside.

Joey, quite rightly, has said he fully intends to see out his final year of his five year contract, and certainly that’s what manager Alan Pardew is banking on as well, as he still sees Joey as a big player for Newcastle next season. So do we.

Joey will try to get Newcastle as high up that Premier League table as possible, and it’s quite possible Newcastle could even make the top six next season – that would be fantastic.

And one reason we could finish that high in the league is that  if the lads hadn’t conceded 3 goals in the last 30 minutes, and the third goal in the very last minute of the season, Newcastle would have finished in 9th place last season.

This is what Joey told The Sun today:

“Every season’s a big season and at a club like Newcastle there’s no time to rest on your laurels.”

“You’ve got to keep pushing on and we have invested in a few players who all look to be good additions to the squad.”

“It’s all about kicking on and building on what we did last season.”

At the minimum we’d love to see another stellar season from Joey next term, and who knows –  if he does that then the  Newcastle hierarchy may give him that contract extension.

That’s what we are hoping for.

Comments welcome.

He’s gotten an extension Ed, he didn’t sign it cause he wasn’t paid “a penny more” as was said. Both him and Pardew has said so… Well, Pardew has atleast.

Barton loses the plot. Thinks we have invested in players who are good additions to the squad. What has he been drinking. Doesn’t he know we have a paper thin squad?

That’s some Daily Star style paraphrasing there Ed. Headline isn’t what Joey said at all, and you go on to back that up by quoting him yourself.

Joey Barton is the best footballing mind at our club, and by rights he would be captain if it weren’t for this idiotic situation that will result in him leaving the club for free, or worse, leaving before this season get’s under way.

Nolan was a no go this year, due to the fact we need midfield player who can actually run/trap a ball, but Barton should be a no-brainer when it comes to getting a contract sorted.

Have you conformed to the pessimistic view or are you mocking them, you sly fox?

Don’t you know all of our players are injury prone, we only buy cheap crocks, Pardew is a puppet, the mackems are gonna smash use and we are doomed…….drone……sob….etc

I was looking forward to the new season and going to the cathedral to watch us take on the gooners till I heard the yelping and bitching on here….

    can we be positive, please?

Think we should be having a Bitch Free Day sometime soon.

Bloggers on here can be so depressing to the point that Ed gets pelters for his headlines.

Lets lighten up people. The weekend should start now.

Joey Barton will not be offered a new contract. He is too outspoken, has too much sway in the dressing room and has baggage that the hierarchy want to get rid of. Unfortunately no-one will pay him what he wants yet, and no bids have been made, so he will be a mag next year which I for one will be happy about as he appears to have found some form.

In terms of incomings I hope to see what is left of the Carroll money invested in this Mevlut Erdinc. The 3 signings for the first team (Cabaye, Marveaux and Ba) have all signed long contracts in the 4/5year bracket. Now lets say on average they are on £30,000 a week, then the outlay for these three is £23.4m. Couple this with renovations at the training ground, pitch relaying and the new contracts being offered to the young players, the club is getting onto a sounder financial footing. At the time Carroll was sold both Llambias and Pardew said the money would stay within the club – this has been the case, though we all thought the £35m would have been used in a similar way to the lads down the A19 – though I believe they’ve thrown too much brass at average signings.

It is my understanding that our Academy is the main interest to Mr Ashley in terms of cultivating local talent, seeing it through to the first team and selling on for profit (sadly). Hence the arrival of the guy from Blackburn who has overseen the progress of players like Martin Olsson, David “junior” Hoilett and Phil Jones.

I’m looking forward to next season, and i see there being progress being made as a club both on and off the pitch. Financially we will be one of 4 Premier League clubs without any debt (aside from the loans owed to Mr Ashley). Now after the travesties of the Boumsongs/Luque’s s/Owens/Relegation etc – did any of us think this would’ve been possible?!

Now let’s bring on Arsenal and fight from the off this time – I’d take a 4-4 draw now!

    Ol

Shola looks massive, shame he cannot put his size to better use, as he would/should terrify defenders. Pity he is lazy as he could have been a boon to the Toon!

    @Felipe

Here’s an example of our paper thin squad. Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be the most likely to finish around 6th this year which is a European spot (which is what Newcastle should be aiming to step up to this year) and this is their defensive cover.

    Defender:
2 Alan Hutton 4 Younes Kaboul 13 William Gallas 15 Adam Smith 16 Kyle Naughton 19 Sébastien Bassong 20 Michael Dawson 22 Vedran Corluka 26 Ledley King 28 Kyle Walker 32 Benoit Assou-Ekotto 36 Bongani Khumalo.

    http://www.skysports.com/football/teams/tottenhamhotspur/

Now apart from Adam Smith, Kyle Naughton and Bongani Khumalo. The other 9 defenders are proven Premiership defenders. In comparison to:

Fabricio Coloccini 3 Jose Enrique 5 Mike Williamson 12 Danny Simpson 14 James Perch 16 Ryan Taylor 27 Steven Taylor 28 Tamas Kadar 34 James Tavernier 48 Matthew Grieve

    http://www.skysports.com/football/teams/newcastleunited/

Take out James Perch, Tamas Kadar, James Tavernier and Matthew Grieve, and we have 6 proven Premiership defenders.

And the most frightening thing of all is, this is a position we haven’t really been strongly linked with bulking up.

If/When we sell Enrique we will supposedly be able to bring in a replacement and a RW. On top of that we’ve supposedly set some money aside for a new striker. Trouble is that’s what Pardew said which makes it a lie and our owner will continue his trend of not reinvesting funds made from player sales. But no need to worry cause everyone on here will be happy with 17th place. Guess everyone prefers mediocrity to ambition. If only Ashley would part with some dosh we could challenge for the europa league spots but eh, why bother???

I agree mate Erdinc would allow us the option of two strikers up front or BHA just behind a striker (floating like a butterfly stinging like b@stad).

If people are questioning us about whether our squad is stronger or weaker have a look at our challengers for mid table. How many are stronger as it stands? I can only think of sunderland who have strengthened and quite a few have weakened – Villa, Bolton
And i’ll go find the link then 🙂
