Newcastle United’s Reserve team were 2-0 down after 75 minutes, but showed good spirit in coming back to win the game against FC Utrect by 3-2, and all 5 goals were scored in the last 31 minutes of the game.
Joey Barton – hits Newcastle’s first goal after 75 minutes
This was the second friendly of the Reserves Dutch pre-season tour, and Joey Barton and local lad Michael Richardson scored for Newcastle before another local lad, Ryan Donaldson scored the winner on 85 minutes.
FC Utrecht played their Reserve side against Newcastle for the game that was played at their training ground, and the hosts missed a good chance in the 12th minute and Newcastle’s Swedish goalkeeper Ole Soderberg then made two excellent saves in a minute to keep his clean sheet.
The game was still 0-0 at the interval.
On 59 minutes Utrect took the lead, and it was against the run of play, when Van Kippeszins crossed from the left wing and the ball sneaked through to the far post and Elroy Pappot put the ball past Soderberg.
Peter Beardsley then brought on Joey Barton after 60 minutes for Greg McDermott, and striker Nile Ranger came on five minutes later for Sammy Ameobi.
Newcastle came fighting back, but then Utrecht made it 2-0 on 74 minutes, when Barton sent a wayward ball back to his defense, and Boldewijn raced through and hit the ball home first time to make it 2-0 – but it was a poor goal to give away.
Joey was obviously annoyed at his error, and within a minute Joey had a terrific shot on goal, and the ball hit the post, and then the rebound was only parried by the goalkeeper, but Joey hit the ball home in fine style when he got to the loose ball, and it was 2-1.
And then on 81 minutes Newcastle scored their second, and it was Michael Richardson, who was playing at full back, who scored following a terrific move by Newcastle that involved Edmundsson, Barton and Airey, and Michael easily side-footed the ball home to make it 2-2.
And then to put the icing on the cake, Ryan Donaldson scored the winner on 85 minutes with a nice effort, and it was his second goal of the tour.
