There is news in The Guardian and The Sun today that Newcastle are after Tottenham striker Peter Crouch.
Peter Crouch – £9M for a 30 year-old?
But the price Spurs are asking for the 30 year old 6’7″ striker is rather high at £9M.
Newcastle have already signed Demba Ba from West Ham on a free transfer, and have been pursuing PSG striker Mevlut Erdinc with no success as yet.
But it would appear that Crouch does not fit the profile of young, improving players Newcastle are looking for.
Newcastle want to buy young players rather cheaply, who can then improve in value as they mature, and this deal would be almost the exact opposite of that.
There are also reports in The Sun that Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has told Newcastle he wants to get back the fee he paid for Crouch two years ago when Peter was signed him from Portsmouth.
But Peter is now two years older and probably not quite as good as he was a couple of years ago.
There is no way Mike Ashley will shell out £9M for a 30 year-old, since he wouldn’t even pay that kind of money for former Newcastle winger Charles N’Zogbia, who’s only just turned 25.
We’re not sure how much truth is in these reports today, but if Crouch will cost £9M, then forget it.
For the record, Peter Crouch turns 31 in January and has played 456 club games with 143 goals, and has played 42 times for England with 22 goals, and he’s a very decent striker.
