Defoe The Target If Newcastle Cannot Get Erdinc

News today in The Sun that Newcastle may go after Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe.

Jermain Defoe – not young at 29

But the news is that Mevlut Erdinc remains the number one choice for the Magpies, and we’ll see in the next week or so whether Newcastle can do a deal with PSG for the 24 year-old Turkish striker.

It seems the fee has already been agreed with PSG, at somewhere around £7M, but it’s Erdinc’s agent, Pierre Frelot, who seems to be the one who has been holding the deal up.

We understand Frelot wants some kind of bonus for doing the transfer, and Newcastle are unwilling to pay it, but it does seem some progress has been made in the last week or so.

And once the squad returns today from America today, we may see some action on the transfer front, with a left back to replace Jose Enrique also high on the agenda.

Defoe seems a bit expensive at £10M, given he’s 29 years old now, and hardly fits into the younger player Newcastle are usually after.

But Newcastle will spend some of that £35M they got for Andy Carroll on another striker, and hopefully Erdinc will come to Tyneside within the next week or so.

Comments welcome.

Dont think MA will pay £10m for a 29 year old do you?
But he really needs to show some ambition in the remainder of this window or Kevin Keegans words will come back to haunt him “NUFC will not spend a penny of the £35m Carrol money”. At first I thought it was just sour grapes, but not now. Total spend so far £0.0m

Theres no way we should be spending 10m on Defoe, there are much younger players who we could get with the same quality for the same price or less.

Would be a great signing for us despite his age – he is at his peak. He brings goals to a team. Two problems what price will dodgy harry actually want (he does not sell cheap) and will ashley pay the money. Bring him in please!

I wouldn’t spend £10M on him, more like £5M tops. Still, a decent player who could do a job for us

Defoe should have 2-3 years in him which he could do the job.
But with Defoe as with Crouch, english players are SOOOO overpriced, it’s never gonna happen.
And if it does happen, it will come off as desperate.
And that won’t bode well for the club.

Cmon Pardew, get those players in!

Get Hugo Rodallega for £9.5m instead of Defoe, massive potential and more sell on value.

If it is an experienced striker we want, go for DJ Campbell.

I see Liverpoo are now interested in Shane Long.

Posted this on the last thread, fits better here.

I see a lot of people saying they’d rather see Harris Vuckic play than sign Defoe.

I’ve seen very little of Vuckic but hope that changes this season and that he, along with some of the other younger lads get more of a chance than last season.

Vuckic at the minute is backup, Defoe in a fully fit team would be first choice alongside Ba when we played 4-4-2.

29 is not old. I’m 33, the way some people go on that must be near pension age. At 29 he should still easily give us 4 good years service.

Signing younger players with big potential makes good business sense. Signing some quality players who are the finished article to play along side them makes good footballing sense

exactly the type of striker we need, even if you lot dont want him because of his age, hes fast, plays off the shoulder and is always in the right place, his goal against algeria in the world cup shows how sharp he is

if ‘arry sells then we’ve another Michael Owen situation . .a striker who is better for pace and finishing .. not good spending that money when they’ve 29 and on top wages .. theres far to many other good strikers to choose from ..Rondon, Rodallega, etc etc would be much better choices..

Defoe’s not worth 10M with his wages on top and no resale value.

He’s not prolific enough and too old.

Really can’t see him being a genuine target.
It’s either a made up story or a smokescreen.

As it’s “The Sun” I’d go for complete bollox as being a 99% cert.

Big Fat NO. We should Defoe stay clear off Defoe. (see what i did there? :P)

    1. He doesnt fit the criteria of player Newcastle are after agewise, and wagewise.

2.Knowing Dirty’Arry in the transfer market he will be expensive.

3.Potential for another Michael Owen Situation.

    4. Strolla scored more goals then him last season in a weaker team

@irish mag; great final paragraph, totally agree.
defoe is quality full stop. proven goalscorer in the EPL which is why we should go for him if available. too many people trying to jigsaw how the 35m is going to be spent by MA, not going to happen people 35m will not go on transfer fees. lets stop thinking erdnic for 7 which leaves 28 left and then we can sign more.
i dont care how much or how little we spend on players as long as they improve what we have and i believe defoe would. seems a bit of a no brainer?

I’ve always wanted us to sign this player as he is very underrated, but with Arry’s logic he will no doubt be overpriced. Still it’s a great move by the club if we can get him for under 10M. At 29 he is at his peak and still desperate to show the world that he is a very talented footballer. Every time he gets a good crack at the first team he scores blinders and gets England recognition. I have watched him closely for years and his style of play will suit us perfectly. I still prefer Sturridge and Erdging but beggars can’t be choosers and Defoe ain’t a bad choice at all.

Defoe will feel loved here at St James’ something he has never had I feel, he he will flourish and still has 3 years in him.

Ps. Great team performance yesterday and as Pardew said we were going to concentrate on the match this time unlike the other pre-season friendlies when it was about fitness. We did what was asked and won comfortably.

We have some great youngsters coming through: Vuckic, Abeid, Sammy Ameobi, Fergurson, Gosling-still young, Travenier.

You state that 35mill will not go on transfer fees. I agree with that point. But what on earth makes you think Mike Ashley will spend atleast 1/3rd of the 35mill on one Ageing Player, who scored less goals then Strolla did last season, with more starts?

he is 28, will be 29 in over two months (which sounds better than calling him 29 which you all are as you start to think his 30th is coming up soon)

    £10m on a 3/4 year contract. Yes please !!!

Ba and Defoe … Big man little man combination

Would be a great addition. Anyone who says overwise is wrong!

The Erdinç saga is a little strange.

I believe he and his agent have a “loyalty payment” from PSG due on August 1st and they are waiting to get that.

These loyalty payments are a bit of a joke and are hindering a few transfers.
I’m sure they are factored into the transfer price by the clubs.
I wish FIFA would do something about agents.

As I said in the last thread, Defoe will almost definitely be being used as a distraction/smokescreen to other clubs.

There is no way that the Cashley Crew would spend this much time, effort and money scouting talent under the age of 27 across Europe, only to go and sign an ageing Jermaine Defoe on top dollar.

Pardew said earlier in the week that Newcastle were well ahead of the game in the transfer market, for me that doesn’t mean stating who you want to buy and for roughly how much. It means knowing who you want, how to get him, and without too many people knowing anything about it.

*Ignore the part about strolla having less starts, he actually had 6 more then defoe.

    Shola Ameobi stats:
    28 League appearences 6 goals.
Total appearences in all competitions (Only took part in two.) 30 with a Total of 9 goals

    Jermain Defoe:
    22 league appearences 2 goals.
Total appearences in all competitions (Only took part in 4.) 30 with a Total of 8 goals

    In conclusion,

Jermain Defoe, is a waste of effort going after. He is too expensive. He is getting old and therefore no resale value, which is key incentive for Ashley to even consider bringing someone to Newcastle.

This transfer wont happen. Thank God. It would be a big mistake.

He would definetly give Simmo competition. Can he play at Left back aswell? Is he any good there? Was just thinking if he could hit it off @ left back, we could potentially replace guttierez and Enrique’s partnership with Ferguson and Tav in a couple years time.
