There were several things that didn’t sound quite right, when the news came out yesterday that Newcastle could be interested in Spurs’ striker Jermain Defoe.
Jermain Defoe - not interested in moving to Newcastle
One was that at 29 years old Jermain is a bit old, and didn’t fit the profile of players Newcastle are usually after, and the other was that Jermain would not come cheap at around £10M.
And some of the reports yesterday mentioned that Defoe may not want to leave the London area, especially to move too far north.
Jermain has played only for London clubs, apart from Portsmouth and Bournemouth, which are both in the South and in fairly close proximity to London.
And news today that the player would not want to move to Newcastle, so there are at least a couple of good reasons why Newcastle will not now pursue the England International.
One is that he is just too expensive to start with, and even if Mike Ashley went against all his natural instincts, and paid £10M for a 29 year-old, Jermain wouldn’t come in any case.
Jermain was going to be the back-up should Newcastle’s £7M bid for Mevlut Erdinc not go through, so the club will now be hoping they can wrap up the deal for the 24 year-old Turkish International within the next week or so.
And in case that deal does not go through – it’s been pending for many weeks now – Newcastle will need to think of who they may go after, if for some reason Erdinc does not arrive on Tyneside.
And it will not be Peter Crouch, who is 30 years old and would cost about the same as Defoe.
