Newcastle Move For Defoe Simply A Non-Starter

5:52 pm, Wednesday, July 27th, 2011 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 165 Comments

There were several things that didn’t sound quite right,  when the news came out yesterday that Newcastle could be interested in Spurs’ striker Jermain Defoe.

Jermain Defoe - not interested in moving to Newcastle

One was that at 29 years old Jermain is a bit old, and didn’t fit the profile of players Newcastle are usually after, and the other was that Jermain would not come cheap at around £10M.

And some of the reports yesterday mentioned that Defoe may not want to leave the London area, especially to move too  far north.

Jermain has played only for London clubs, apart from Portsmouth and Bournemouth,  which are both in the South and in fairly close proximity to London.

And news today that the player would not want to move to Newcastle, so there are at least a couple of good reasons why Newcastle will not now pursue the England International.

One is that he is just too expensive to start with, and even if Mike Ashley went against all his natural instincts, and paid £10M for a 29 year-old, Jermain wouldn’t come in any case.

Jermain was going to be the back-up should Newcastle’s £7M bid for Mevlut Erdinc not go through, so the club will now be hoping they can wrap up the deal for the 24 year-old Turkish International within the next week or so.

And in case that deal does not go through – it’s been pending for many weeks now – Newcastle will need to think of who they may go after,  if for some reason Erdinc does not arrive on Tyneside.

And it will not be Peter Crouch, who is 30 years old and would cost about the same as Defoe.

Any ideas?

Comments welcome.

Glad to hear it was all crap talk, didnt want him anywhere near our starting 11

  • 2 Frank pingles come sock // Jul 27, 2011 at 5:56 PM

    2nd !

  • 3 Frank pingles come sock // Jul 27, 2011 at 5:57 PM

I would take him he is 10 times better than Best,Shola,LovenPants,Ranger or Sammy Lee

  • 4 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 5:59 PM

It was never going to happen, Nolan was not offered a contract that was long enough for him because of his age, so why would we pay 10mil for a player of the same age.
Lazy, lazy journo’s having a slow day

  • 5 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:00 PM

WHAT I HAD DEFOE NO 9 PUT ON MY SHIRT!!!! Damnit I will add it to the Gervinho no 9 and N’Zogbia no 10 shirts……what a waste of money

  • 6 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:02 PM

Just as well you haven’t got the keepers tops

  • 7 Starnufc // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:02 PM

yeah my idea is we dont want either one of those pav was tottenham top scorer last we dont need another striker past his prime!!! just erdinc will be who we need/get unless some other cheaper option comes up

  • 8 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:05 PM

What about a cheeky bid for Gyan?

  • 9 pizzicatochan // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:06 PM

@WWJBD, I actually have one saying “45 Pizzicato” on the back.

  • 10 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:06 PM

Erding, if not Lens. Lens made the transition from RW to ST in the second-half of PSVs’ last season – scampering speed, brilliant workrate and a cool finisher, very Bellamy-esque.

That would be my choice anyway.

  • 11 pizzicatochan // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:07 PM

@JackButler, bidding a Mackem? I am not sure if everyone’s okay with this idea.

  • 12 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:08 PM

    pizzicatochan

    Why not?
He’s a class player, and with everything else that Bruce as signed it would be a shame to leave their one good player there
    ;)

  • 13 arfa chance#10 // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:09 PM

Jeremy lens is good but cud he handle the prem ?

  • 14 Toon-tinted-glasses // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:10 PM

A recent Press-Release by the United Club Shop…Mainly for people whom, like WWJBD, have put rumoured names on their shirts before any official confirmation of being signed….

‘We are pleased to announce that we now stock different coloured bottles of Tip-ex so that you can tipex out any names which no longer appl;y to your strips! Colours include White, Black and Orange’

Supposedly the range is the biggest selling in the shop since the transfer window opened!

    :)

  • 15 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:10 PM

Haha ah I bet someone out there really does have all those shirts bless them!

JB Gyan would be amazing but Brucey wouldnt sell

SmS aye Lens was meant to be a top target for us but that disappeared fast didnt it shame really I liked the look of him

  • 16 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:12 PM

    Hahahahaha love it Toon-tinted-glasses

  • 17 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:12 PM

  • 18 toontoon_andyb // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:14 PM

wudnt mind defo but crouch no thank you

  • 19 gonz // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:15 PM

I’ve been wanting Lens playing for Newcastle for a few seasons now. I would love it. I would love it if I could see him in a black & white top! Only problem is that he’s only recently signed a new contract and would cost more than 15-20m and we know that Ashley isn’t going to fork out that kind of money for a player.

  • 20 toontoon_andyb // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:15 PM

i no its a striker we defo need but wot happened with barnetta?

    JB
Aye mate he would bang in goals left right and centre for us with Cabaye, Barton, HBA and Gosling behind him shame it wont happen :(

  • 25 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:20 PM

arfachance#10 – he could definitely hack it in the Prem, he’s got a fighting spirit, as I say, very much in the same mould as Bellamy, without the foolish, infantile behaviour.

I’d actually like him over Erding, but that’s mainly because of me being oblivious to Erding, before we were linked.

  • 26 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:20 PM

    davybtoon

Remy hasn’t long signed a new deal, and would cost a hell of a lot more than we could pay.
Sorry, would love to see him come here, but won’t happen

  • 56 brklyngeordie // Jul 27, 2011 at 6:33 PM

Congrats to the lads on the win in columbus nice way to end the tour.. Feel that Abeid Gosling and Vukcic benefited most from it but that will be seen when the season starts..time to take care of somethings in house and quickly..1. Bye Bye Jose gotta go get the money dont panic buy and wait for the right man 2 replace..2. No HBA for first 2 games is huge and with the strikeforce in no particular form could be trouble lets get 1 more in before the window..3. who will be the #1 harper or krul?..4. not saying to break the bank cause im not expecting that from the board but come on at least 2 possibly 3 more in before the window shuts and lets get out 3-5 with sales or loans before the season starts..5.Lay the gauntlet down early sets some real goals for the lads but in back of the mind be realistic nice cup runs and a top 10 finish with some of the new faces getting used to the league and squad would be nice and who knows if we r in good position by january maybe we make a splash in the market then.. well all things im hoping for HWTL lets kick on this season!!

We cannot afford any of these players. That is the simple truth. Besides, none of them are crocks and they would cost more than nowt. We will get Oewn Hargreaves. He is right up the owner’s street.

  • 96 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:07 PM

Both Krul and Forster have said they are not prepared to be No2′s, for me Krul is head and shoulder above Forster in terms of Ability and experience in the prem, but, now for cynical view, Krul is worth more in terms of transfer fee, and we all know how Mr Ashley love a good sale
    :(

penalty shoot out on itv4 milan and internacial.

  • 98 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:10 PM

Also a cynical side JB he will get more money in a few years for Krul. So i suppose there’s always a chance he’d like him to progress before selling him. Whatever happens we’re not in a bad place keeper wise though. If it is FF number 1 we’re still better than most teams in that area

  • 99 GeordieTwo // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:10 PM

Whoever starts against Fiorentina will probably be no. 1. I’m betting on Krul with Harper as backup. Forster will probably have to be loaned out again or sold if the right deal comes alone. Forster is huge and can make good reaction saves but not as good overall as Krul.

  • 100 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:11 PM

Watched the boy several times last season when he was Celtic and I would go as far as to say Forster is not in the same class as Krul.
Just as the Celtic fans what they thought of him, not many rated him, plus he has never played in the Premier league

My dad huge celtic nut and he wasn’t best pleased with him. Think maybe another loan would be best option for the club. Maybe to swansea or someone?

  • 105 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:19 PM

@ 100 – Harps was/is still No 1. Simple. But they know he’s gettn on and one of the two: Krul or Forster would have to step up this year. They each took in a fair bit of training, swapping out every three series. Harps did the least (not being disrespectful) as he was being rested/eased. But again, as others have said, read #86.

I just feel after watching FF in training for three days, he’s pissed, he wears it and like others, wants some clarity on his future. Given what Pards has said, Harps will be No. 1 but Krul will be used more. FF is ready, just not for Toon’s No. 1. Yet.

  • 106 davybtoon // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:20 PM

  • 107 davybtoon // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:22 PM

if we go into the season with harper as no1 keeper were asking for trouble, krul is a mile better n now looks like dutch no1

  • 108 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:22 PM

@ 101- good points, especially the last bit about exp. But to me, head and shoulders means comparing Messi to Marcelino, not these guys. Oddly enough the two Scots who were at training though he was the second coming… And one was a Gers fan…

  • 109 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:23 PM

    davybtoon

would agree about Tavernier, the kid has looked very settled, composed and sure of his positioning, with Gosling, Vukic, Abied and young Fergie, we’ve got a great young core coming through

  • 110 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:23 PM

@davy he isn’t number 1. He’s probably number 3. Steklenburg ahead of him. He is a top keeper! And the 2nd man was injured which is why krul was in for brazil game i think? He could be in 3-4 years i guess

  • 111 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:25 PM

@Nufcfan76 there are quite a few lads on here who support either rangers or celtic and all of those have said he’s not up to scratch. I’m bemused by the fact a rangers fan thought that! Considering he was at fault twice for goals in an oldfirm game and got sent off in 1

  • 112 davybtoon // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:25 PM

aint seen much of forster couple times at celtic n v orlando, but i kno norwich fans n paul lambert said he was gonna b england no1 they thought he was outstanding, n ive gotta say after i watched the orlando game he flapped at a couple corners but was outstanding the rest of the game

  • 113 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:25 PM

    NUFCFAN76

I would be honestly worried if FF was in goal for the game against Arsenal, but I trust Krul and would be happy for him to have the No1 shirt.

  • 114 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:25 PM

105 – For me, training and hte SKC were opposites: players who did well were absent in the match. Ba and Best still looked the best in training. But I’d say Tav, Abeid, Gosling and Colo were the most solid overall after watching the other games.

  • 115 shamsoftabriz // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:26 PM

Neither Defoe nor Crouch are acceptable purchases for 9 or 10M pounds. I prefer Erdinc and N’Zogbia to both of them. Let’s outbid Villa and get N’Zogbia back on Tyneside. If that doesn’t happen, up the bid for Erdinc to 8M. We cannot settle for second rate players on the downside of their careers…and that’s all we get from Crouch or Defoe.

krul was brilliant against brazil n uraguay n is in the squad for dutch next international now hes got international call up he wont settle for no2

  • 117 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:28 PM

I think Krul’s exp takes him over the line. But FF athleticism is better. Again, neither will start in goal. Its Harps.

  • 118 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:28 PM

Aguero is officially a PL player….excited to see him have a impact on our fair land of football

Man City to win the title this season

  • 119 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:29 PM

Cant see Harper being sold, as i think he’s one for a future coaching role

  • 120 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:29 PM

    WWJBD

Dread to think how much they are paying him

  • 121 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:30 PM

@ 115 – Agreed. That’s why Pards has some tough choices; which has been mentioned a lot. Like I said, at this point there all “Big ‘uns.”

  • 122 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:31 PM

    JB

Oh I would guess atleast 150k/wk but when you have the money cant blame them…personally I quite like Man City

  • 123 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:34 PM

    wwjbd

would have thought a hell of a lot more than that like!

  • 124 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:34 PM

I can’t wait for Aguero to play! Loved him ever since FM2006 because he was playing when he was 16 and was mint! haha

  • 125 pizzicatochan // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:35 PM

@NUFCFAN76, Krul and Forster are going to form a duo, equivalent to Given and Harper the next 10 years (if no one comes for them).

  • 126 JackButler // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:35 PM

    right i’m off,
    have a good night lads

  • 127 pizzicatochan // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:36 PM

And we still have Solderberg, Alnwick and Grant.

  • 128 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:36 PM

    JB
Really? I just put him on par with Balotelli (am sure I read somewhere he is on 150k/wk) tbh haha with Man City though the sky is literally the limit

  • 129 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:36 PM

    Night JB

  • 130 nufc90 // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:38 PM

i thought he was on 180,000€ a week at atletico.. can’t wait to see him play though he’s one of my favourite strikers ever since his independiente days. i worry though whether he’ll have as much impact as he could with mancini’s negative tactics at times.
lets hope he has an off day against us :)

  • 131 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:38 PM

Did anybody else think gosling looked like a mobile nolan at times last night? Got a fair few chances in and around the box. His little flick for Ba’s chance was class as well

  • 132 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:41 PM

I can see Mancini going all attack next season I really think they will be fighting for the PL title

If they keep Tevez then they are arguably the strongest team in the league

  • 133 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:44 PM

Tevez (if he stays) and Aguero up top. Silva left johnson right yaya am dejong dm. That is an absolute quality M/F. Beasts ManU’s midfield

  • 134 Special K // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:44 PM

I’d go with Harper purely for experience, Krul still seems shaky at times on crosses, however I’d give him and FF the chance to fight it out next year with Harps No.2.

For this year I’d send whoever doesn’t feature between Forester and Krul to the Championship, preferably a title contender. See how they fare

  • 135 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:45 PM

Lads, for your viewing pleasure. Much more to come.

  • 136 Dannyo // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:45 PM

Who else is putting money on Sammy getting more starters than Shola upcoming season?? :P

  • 137 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:49 PM

Kompany Lescott Richards and Clichy with Hart behind them

I am really looking forward to seeing Man City play next season

  • 138 Felipe // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:52 PM

I see we’re definitely improving on last year. I’ve just looked at the league table and we’re 11th :-)

  • 139 Geordie-Jake // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:56 PM

    bayern vs barca itv4 :)

  • 140 pizzicatochan // Jul 27, 2011 at 7:57 PM

@WWJBD, have you seen the tactic used around 40 years or 50 years ago called 2-3-5? I learned that when I played EA’s FIFA World Cup 200x (or even 199x) a long time ago with some legend England/Brazil team.

Man City can do this with Aguero, Dzeko, Balotelli, Tevez and Adebayor.

  • 141 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:00 PM

pizzicatochan I can honestly say I havent heard of that formation but equally I would FREAKING LOVE to see City play it haha what about if they just didnt bother with a GK!

  • 142 belfastmagpie87 // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:06 PM

    evening all,any news??? :)

  • 143 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:10 PM

    See above Bel.

  • 144 boater // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:14 PM

If we were ever to spend some friggin cash of course – adebayor would be good.

  • 145 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:17 PM

Barca fringe players are pretty good cant we stick in some bids

  • 146 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:18 PM

All this does is push A Johnson down the list at Citeh. Ask for a loan or splash the cash Ash! Ideal for what we need and the style we want to play. That lad knows where the net is and he is THE “bum off/on seat” type.

  • 147 belfastmagpie87 // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:18 PM

im gona stick a few quid on man city to win the league next year. :)

man utd fans who complain about man city buying the league are a joke.haha

man utd bought the league year after year ffs.

  • 148 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:20 PM

man u bought the bloody whole FA never mind the league!

  • 149 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:22 PM

@146 – Agreed Bel. Yeah, it’s alway sour grapes with each new limitless check book regime, isn’t it? It’s what makes it all a soap opera. Also why I keep coming back.

  • 150 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:23 PM

Anyone watching the Bayern vs Barca game? That Asian lad Bayern are playing is (to steal a phrase from Barton) decent

  • 151 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:24 PM

Na mate watching wolves Celtic! Some PROPER football haha!

  • 152 belfastmagpie87 // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:25 PM

I hate when man utd fans complain, city are trying to buy there own history.

Like man utd didn’t buy there own history ffs…lol

  • 153 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:26 PM

Haha Wolves Celtic hope the ref didnt forget his yellow card because he will be using it a lot ;)

  • 154 NUFCFAN76 // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:27 PM

  • 155 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:34 PM

if it wasn’t a friendly there’d of been 2 or 3 yellows so far like haha!

  • 156 Geordie-Jake // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:36 PM

i hate it wen people say man city r buyin the league yet wot do all big rich teams do, BUY PLAYERS TO STRENGHEN THEIR SQUADS TO TRY AND WIN THE LEAGUE, its just man city bought most of their mint players in one clump

  • 157 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:36 PM

Right Jose to Barca and in return we get Thiago and Fontas hahaha I reckon thats fair

  • 158 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:42 PM

Sure in thiago’s new contract he had a new release clause but in which was about 50m euros!

  • 159 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:44 PM

Andy you always have to ruin my best plans!

  • 160 GeordieToon89 // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:44 PM

a think we should be trying to get Jeffren hes available for £5million thats a steal!!

  • 161 Andy // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:46 PM

Haha maybe there’s still a chance. Really good little player though

  • 162 WWJBD // Jul 27, 2011 at 8:51 PM

Haha aye he is very classy the commentators seem to think he will be offered to Arsenal as part exchange for Cesc

  • 163 JP...from The Rock // Jul 27, 2011 at 10:08 PM

Erding or Sturridge and I am happy :)

  • 164 branunited // Jul 27, 2011 at 10:20 PM

just heard from a farily reliable source that we will announce the signing of Loic remy in the next week or so for a fee believed to be in the region of £10 million. Defoe/crouch rumours just a smoke screen and the board have got tired of waiting for erdinc to make his mind up You heard it here first.

not really there for sure, but I hope it’s true
