There were a lot of positives that Alan Pardew will have taken from the game last night in Columbus.
James Tavernier – solid game in defense
Newcastle were superior throughout the game, and of course it helped when goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum handled outside the box just before the interval, and left little alternative for the referee other to send him off.
But Newcastle were already 1-0 up with a good opportunist goal from Shola Ameobi after 8 minutes, and then on 51 minutes captain Coloccini scored a lovely goal with his left foot, and Newcastle became even more dominant.
Youngsters Tavernier and Dummett, who was introduced in place of the superb Coloccini after Fabricio’s goal, were both solid in defense, and young Dam Gosling was energetic in the Newcastle midfield throughout.
And Slovenian Haris Vuckic again showed why he seems to be in big demand by some big clubs, with a terrific goal just before the end.
And this could be the season for the 18 year-old to come through big time on Tyneside, and we hope he does just that.
It was just one pre-season win, but it seems to have done a lot for the Newcastle fans, who were upbeat about the much improved display after the rather lethargic performance on Saturday night in Orlando.
Now to get Mevlut Erdinc and a left back in over the next week or so, and we’ll be on our way again.
