Two More Top Players And Newcastle Not Too Far Away

1:25 pm, Thursday, July 28th, 2011 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 202 Comments

Pardew praised the performance of Demba Ba against the Columbus Crew, and was pleased the way the lads came back after a poor performance in Orlando on Saturday night.

>Demba Ba – played well on Tuesday night

In fact both Shola Ameobi and Demba Ba looked powerful players for Newcastle on Tuesday,  and they were a more than a  handful for the Crew.

Pardew was really pleased with the excellent performance put in by the lads in Columbus, and he had this to say today:

“The performance against Columbus was there for all to see – Demba Ba did well.” “If we get a couple of new players this team won’t be far away.”

“As I have explained it will take time.” “But in August things will start coming thick and fast,  everybody has been away on tour.”

“I think we could have something resolved in time for the Arsenal game. I hope we will.” “I certainly feel that the motivation from Mike Ashley, Derek and myself is to get the deal done before that game.”

“You can never say never with transfers.” “I think this has been a great period for me.” “When you have a tour like we have had, which gained good, bad and ugly, the character of the group shines through.”

“We were under pressure at times, especially after losing to Orlando.”

Hopefully things will now move to the transfer market and Newcastle can bring in a striker and then a left back to replace Jose Enrique.

It turns out that Pardew has been in regular communication with both owner Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias while he has been stateside, and Lee Charnley, the Newcastle Secretary, has also been in close communication with Alan over the last 10 days or so.

We are hoping Newcastle can get Mevlut Erdinc in within the next few days,  but if that doesn’t happen then Newcastle will have to turn to some other strikers, but who they may be we have absolutely no idea.

Any ideas?

Comments welcome.

    TOON ARMY and all that!

  • 2 Spike // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:27 PM

I hope we don’t have all of our eggs in one basket with Erdinc. It doesn’t sound like he/his agent wants him to come

  • 3 belfastmagpie87 // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:28 PM

Whats going on here, theres about ten articles on the go. :)

  • 4 Andy // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:29 PM

If 2 players and we’re not far away why not get 3 and actually be there?

  • 5 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:29 PM

Dont comment Ed will only get annoyed and put another article up!

  • 6 Dannyo // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:31 PM

Tbh there’s no strikers out there for us off the top of my head.
With that said, i do belive the brothers in the the swedish league has been mentioned, and a few others by peeps here on the website and in newcastle rumours.
I myself know little about any availability with the same type of player as Erdinc is, but im sure Carr has a few on the list… :P

  • 7 belfastmagpie87 // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:37 PM

This erdinc thing is boring me now…..

  • 8 2 AMEOBI'S // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:39 PM

    1 Striker
    1 Right winger

both of good quality (price irrelivant). This without more going out would be minimum for a decent window.

Left back cover would also go down well. Would only sell perch and xisco, smudge, along with barton, may well be vital for team spirt. Alan Smith… Worlds most expensive cheerleader

  • 9 Eastander // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:41 PM

Busy day Ed? I only left for half an hour to get my dinner and theres like 5 new articles!

  • 10 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:47 PM

    More neg bate Ed!

  • 11 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:48 PM

    @8

Will be a striker + Fullback

  • 12 BelfastMagpie87 // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:48 PM

It is hard to keep up like….

  • 13 John // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:49 PM

    Upson or scott dann, bassong.

  • 14 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:52 PM

Upson? No it would be like getting big fat Sol back

Dann or Bassong I would be happy with though

  • 15 Andy // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:53 PM

Would love Dann. He’s a top cb. If it wasn’t for his injury brum would’ve stayed up

  • 16 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:58 PM

    I would have had Bassong.

£4m was the price being touted for him.
Whats the price on Dann’s head?

  • 17 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 1:59 PM

Dann was said to be 10+mill but if Birmingham are as shagged as they seem to be its whatever the bank consider a decent bid for him

  • 18 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:06 PM

Who was the player we turned down 2 bids for btw?

  • 19 Eastander // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:06 PM

    @18 Ranger

  • 20 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:08 PM

Ta Eastander was there any info on what the bids were?

  • 21 Eastander // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:10 PM

Apparently they were both loan bids within the last 24hours, one of them was Birmingham, dont know who the other one was apart from it was a championship team, were supposed to be holding out for a permanent move though

  • 22 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:13 PM

Jason Puncheon’s name has surfaced again I see

  • 23 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:14 PM

We should make an offer to exchange Ranger, Routledge and Perch plus a few million, for Dann. Then all we need shot of, is Smith and bloody Xisco!

  • 24 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:15 PM

Maybe we could use Ranger to get Dann….would very much work for me

  • 25 Eastander // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:17 PM

I dont know what happens if you offer cash for a birmingham player now… cant they accept it because they’re owner has had all his assets frozen?

  • 26 JohnnyBrookes // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:17 PM

Can someone put this “negger” tag to bed. It really is stupid as hell. It’s not negative to want to show ambition and move forward, and no-one wants to waste money, clearly.

I just want my club to do well, 2 strikers, and some cover for our full backs, and I’m happy. Is that unrealistic, no? cue the “WHY WOULD YOU SPEND MONEY ON MICHAEL OWEN’s FFS< NEGGERS< WHAT YOU WANNA WASTE MONEY< WE HAVE YOUTH etcccccc"

I just want decent players!! That's it.

  • 27 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:17 PM

    @24

    Straight swap?!?

  • 28 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:19 PM

    @25

Birmingham havnt had their assets frozen, its the owner that has, so the money would go into Brums bank

  • 29 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:20 PM

Eastander I dont know tbh…..surely it would be down to the bank but they are all about cold hard cash rather than players but who knows. Ranger plus 5 mill for Dann

  • 30 Aye Aye How // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:30 PM

Dann would be a good choice but Bassong, no no, dont forget he turned his back on us when we went down!! No way he’ll be liked again , although he is a good young defender sstill!!

  • 31 Felipe // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:32 PM

@johnnybrookes 26: I don’t think it;s aimed at you JB. There are others on here are negative about every last thing about the club and are abusive with it. I think we’d all like to see at least a new striker and some cover at LB, I certainly would.

  • 32 Scottiedog // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:36 PM

Bored of this now!!! Think I will only start reading articles when we have actually signed someone

  • 33 dmac // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:36 PM

Dann would be a good player, however im not sure why people are so against Bassong. He was not one of the ones trying to jump ship he was sold as Tottenham made a good offer.

He was a decent player id take him back.

  • 34 ~Cheik Mate~ // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:37 PM

Two more top players and We arnt too far away.

I agree, But with some of the Doom Monger comments on this blog, you would think we were lightyears away from any sort of improvement.

  • 35 Aye Aye How // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:38 PM

    Scottydog, i totally agree!!

  • 36 Eastander // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:40 PM

This is boring when theres no-one to argue with! :)

  • 37 boater // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:40 PM

    Johnnybrookes – Seconded.

Felipe – with respect, you remain along with davybtoon – an increasingly rare, puzzling Ostrich type. We all know the importance of positive support come August. In the meantime asking to see a portion of a whopping transfer war-chest spent on much needed recruits – is a fair nay perfectly normal stance,

  • 38 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:42 PM

Dann, Izagguire and Erding in. ‘Losing’ Smith, Xisco (does he exist or has he being bunked off?), Perch, Routledge and Ranger. I’d be ecstatic if that were to be the remainder of our window!

I’d hope to keep Enrique at the club for his final year, so hopefully Izagguire could rival and humble him, when the oppurtunity arises.

  • 39 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:43 PM

    …..but that’s in fluffy world.

  • 40 Tyneside // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:45 PM

  • 42 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:47 PM

I actually think Xisco is in the matchday pies.

  • 43 scdoty // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:47 PM

    @95% of people on here

Lads this blog is f**k boring now, really lads you think your going to change a persons side of the pro/neg Ashley regime?

Love this blog normally, but now I dot even read all of the comments, as soon as I see name calling and bitching I just move onto next contructive comment (if there is any).

We support the same team, let’s talk football not shite.

    HWTL

  • 44 Tyneside // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:48 PM

Talk talk bloody talk, shut up and sign players ya muppet

  • 45 boater // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:51 PM

Felipe – you ignore the crucial psychological importance of the club’s mood and atmosphere going into a new season.. nowhere is that more important than at the toon..

When we went down it what largely due to the toxic atmosphere between owner and fans, with management and players caught in the middle somewhere… a bold transfer gesture is important,, it doesn’t have to be Michael friggin Owen but someone to appease the fans who pay hard earned cash to support the team week after week, season after season. They should be spending upwards of 20mil this window.. but suddenly we’ve all lowered our expectations and are desperately hoping to spend £6.5 mil on a striker !! it’s funking unbelievable when you take a step back.

They stuck by the club in their thousands during relegation, have seen Hughton, Carroll, Nolan leave – do they not deserve a splash signing with the Carroll money?? Not just freebies and knock down goods??

Maybe Enrique and Routledge’s attitude is endemic of the other players – maybe it isn’t… don’t know how you can fail to recognise how important being seen to be ambitious and progressive is though I really don’t.

  • 46 davybtoon // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:53 PM

think the erding deal get sorted this weekend since hes in the country anyway for the emiretes cup with psg, psg dont want him havin accepted 6.5m from us, his agent said he wud love to come here, but the bonus payment is whats holding this up if it dont come off jermaine lens would b my next target, but pardew n carr seem to have a real hardon for erding so can see it happening

  • 49 davybtoon // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:57 PM

boater – how can u not see the signings of gosling, hba, tiote, cabaye, marveux, ba, abeid n prob erding in the last season is progress, houghton not a great manager as will b proved with brummies, nolan being replaced with cabaye is jus quality n best thing bout it we will hav got all them for around 22mill

  • 50 Andy // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:57 PM

Boater i agree with most of what you say but i hate it when people are implying the players we have brought in are not up to it. How do you know? I dislike the fact we aren’t going all out for a good striker but to complain about getting freebies and getting players is a bit daft tbh. I think the club has done well on the players coming in but am frustraded we’re not getting a top striker (well within our means) to come here

  • 51 wynsleap // Jul 28, 2011 at 2:58 PM

Must admit this Erding transfer is becoming so boring now.
If the guy doesn’t want to come let him be and move onto another target.
Apart from Sturridge – all the UK based forwards are overpriced so surely there must be some fit, strong running, bustling centre forwards in the African or South American areas or small, more technical, nippy types in the lower reaches of the Spanish, Italian and Dutch leagues.
Surely £10 million could bag us a couple (one of each)and would greatly improve our strikeforce.
For example who’d previously heard much of Demba Ba, Odemwingie, Rodallega etc before they came to prominence here?
Erding? Stop putting all our eggs in one basket and starting searching the rest of the farm.
The thought of Lovenkrands, Stroller and Best starting games again upfront leaves me with a shiver!

us toon fans have a habbit of thinkin we know whats best for he club, all am gonna say is remeber when everyone kicke off with messiah on the stairs of sjp for selling andy cole only to b proved wrong, we dont kno best we jus think we do

  • 58 Tyneside // Jul 28, 2011 at 3:10 PM

    Hahaha

You must be enjoying him talk shit then, is that it?
By the time the window shuts we wouldn’t have spent a penny on transfers. Nolans fee covered Cabaye, and Enriques fee will cover Erdings plus what other player he is supposed to be after.

He’s sucking ashleys cock as we speak

  • 59 Eastander // Jul 28, 2011 at 3:11 PM

theres no guarentee with anyonewhen they join a new club same league or not that they are going to perform no matter how much you spend, look at torres, 50m and he was terrible for chelsea!
I’d love to see the look some of your faces if we spend 25m on a striker and he scored 10goals this season, sharp change ya tune! or if it was us who paid 20m for henderson! or is that good business because you’ve spent lots?

scdoty – We’re on the same page. If we finally manage a quality striker like Erdinç or Sturridge get ready to watch everyone posting positive comments only for it to be short lived and people start bitcin the fact we still need defensive reinforcements and the Ashley out crap. I am no fan of Ashley but we should support the club and eachother and stop taking sides, it makes me sick.

  • 86 Felipe // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:04 PM

@boater 44: You say I ‘ignore the crucial psychological importance of the club’s mood’ which is quite bizarre really when I and a few others have been trying our damndest to stop people like yourselves destroying that mood with all the negative talk. When we came up last year the club had a 5 year plan the first year of which was survival and ending with our competing again for europe. We achived step 1 with plenty to spare and I think with the squad we now have we are about 3 years ahead of step 2. Yes, I think we could be challenging for a europa place this year. We have Cabaye and Gosling to replace Nolan and Ba to replace Carroll. If we can get another striker to add to Ba, Ameobi, Best & Lover and a left back to cover and/or replace Jose then we’re sorted for now and can take another look at what we need in January. I think we are being ambitious, while most of the teams in the league are aiming purely at survival we are pushing to get back into the top 6/7. That is my opinion.

  • 87 Eastander // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:05 PM

NUFC_Richyg01 – Exactly mate, and sure it will haha, everyone on here is football bonkers! we all are.

I am happy now, but if we don’t sign at LEAST a striker and left back, then i will be the first to complain ;)

Moods change all the time, makes it more interesting to read haha

  • 96 Andy // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:12 PM

Blackburn Villa, Bolton, Wigan, Norwich, Wolves, Wigan, , QPR, Swansea,WBA we SHOULD finish above them i think. We should be battling with mackems everton for higher up. Whether it happens is another thing

  • 97 Eastander // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:13 PM

WWJBD – I would be tempted to throw fulham in there, I dont know why but i just cant see them having a very good season

  • 98 dave 1961 // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:13 PM

davybtoon the fans were correct on Andy Cole as he went on to beat us to the title, when his replacements failed.

  • 99 gazza going fishing // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:14 PM

Felipe – Your not that bad mate, you have very good points, as does everyone.

WWJBD – Wigan, Villa, Swansea and Wolves for me ;)

  • 100 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:16 PM

Andy Bolton may struggle with lack of strikers but I can see them getting some loan players in. WBA I reckon will be pretty good next season

Eastanders Fulham, really? I think they will have a good season if they can keep Zamora fit

  • 101 G // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:16 PM

@Post 91. As things stand now, Blackburn dead cert to finish bottom, then it’s between Norwich, Swansea, Wigan, Wolves and WBA. I suspect the suprise of the season will be how well QPR do, once they sack Colin Warnock after about 4 games then appoint an expensive Italian manager, whom they will release January funds for.

  • 102 Andy // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:17 PM

Ah yes Fulham. Paper thin squad and not many players in. Also quite old

  • 103 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:17 PM

gazza no QPR? I cant see them getting more than 25 points

  • 104 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:18 PM

I see our main rivals next season should be Sunderland Everton Fulham and Bolton maybe WBA

  • 105 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:18 PM

I really hope Stoke have a terrible season and are relegated.

But I’ll predict Wigan, QPR and Swansea. Norwich will survive I reckon, good support and we need more food based puns back in the Premiership. Mike to nail Delias’ crusty cob 20/1 – any takers?

  • 106 gazza going fishing // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:20 PM

WWJBD – Orderpends if they decide to invest, they might just be being patient haha

  • 107 Eastander // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:21 PM

WWJBD – I would put stoke in the pot of teams we will be challenging as well

  • 108 Felipe // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:21 PM

I hate to say it but I think Stoke are up there as well…but I think after Man U, Man C, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs we should be in the mix…

  • 109 barryvenison // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:21 PM

Blackburn have Benjani, Roberts, Kalinic up front. Even we have a better strike force than them. Though I did like the look of their new signing Formica who played up front yesterday. Good skill but not too sure if he’ll cut it in the prem.

  • 110 WWJBD // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:21 PM

Haha I cant see QPR investing like from what I have heard (very limited knowledge on QPR I admit) there is huge issues within the board room 2 very different camps

Plus I dont think they have as much money as they say they do

  • 111 ochytoon // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:21 PM

QPR, Blackburn, Aston Villa, Wigan, Wolves, Norwich and Swansea although I don’t think the latter will struggle to badly and I don’t expect them to be relegated

I just find it rediculas that they are spending soo much money on a team and paying their players £250 000 a week, wheres the common sense.

  • 142 Munster Mag // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:38 PM

Some interesting comments there. Much will depend o the fitness of Bden Arfa and Demba Ba in my opinion. Enrique is a gifted player ( dont u just laugh when scaousers say he;s not good enough for them ? Er Konchesky must have gone down well with them….) and his loss on the left could be huge as an attacking force. I agree with a good bit of Ashleys tactics in building the club, even if its to sell it. Its great that we no longer get mugged in the transfer market, but we are all supposing that guys like marveaux abd cabaye are as good as we are told…..they may not be….afdter all , we were told Luque was excellent! Still, i’m optimistic. If we sign a very good left back ( assuming Enrique goes) and pacy striker, i’ll be very happy. Incidentally, what is Erdinc like?? Opinions vary hugely ….is it true his scoring record is poor ???

If anyone thinks it makes one iota difference if we were first choice or not it’s daft. You are questioning the proffesionalism of these players. Do you think just because we maybe weren’t marveaux’s first choice he isn’t going to try hard. Footballers are ambitious and players like marveaux and cabaye have the chance to prove themselves in “the worlds best league”

  • 172 K4Toon // Jul 28, 2011 at 4:59 PM

ST x1, RW x1, LB x1, CB x1 are the least we need, and that’s given we keep Barton and get rid of the two Spaniards. in addition, Smith, Perch, Loven, Routledge can go, and maybe MA shld play half of the wage for Xisco n Smith to help get them out the door. some may think we hv enough midfielders, but in fact apart from Spiderman and maybe Marveaux we hv zero pace in the middle, esp when HBA is out we need someone to provide the spark n creativity out wide (and even so we hv to assume that Cabaye can function as he did in Lille) . with Campbell gone and no apparent successor in the reserve, why didn’t we hijack Woodgate as backup?

  • 173 Smooth moves Shola // Jul 28, 2011 at 5:00 PM

For me, I just think the backing off will never be rectified for Simo, it’s an instinct to him, an in-built reflex that can’t be coached out, in my opinion. From what little I’ve seen of Tav, he has a better attacking mind and oodles of pace. In the tackle they’re probs even (ooer), but Simo does cover his CBs well, I’ll give him that.

Seems Simo gets the nod though.
