With Newcastle’s pursuit of Mevlut Erdinc continuing to stall, Newcastle are starting to look elsewhere for another striker.
Jermaine Beckford – not the answer for Newcastle
The local Newcastle press reported a few weeks ago that Newcastle had identified three strikers on the continent, but not much more has been heard of those targets.
Instead, rather surprisingly, there is a report in today’s Sunday Sun that Newcastle may be after Everton’s Jermaine Beckford.
Newcastle bid for Beckford eighteen months ago, when he was still at Leeds playing in League One, and even offered £1M for the player, but Jermaine elected to stay at Leeds and helped them to get promoted to the Championship.
And then last summer, when Beckford was available as a free agent, Newcastle didn’t go after him and Everton eventually signed him.
But Beckford was hardly a huge success in the Premier League last season for Everton and couldn’t get a starting place, although when he’s in form he looks great, but like Shola Ameobi at Newcastle, there are too many times when Jermaine just disappears in games.
He did that in one game earlier this year, and wouldn’t fall back to help out the team, and Everton manager David Moyes was furious with him, and hauled him off and give him a verbal dressing down too.
In 38 appearances for Everton last season, Jermain scored 10 goals, 8 of those being in the Premier League, and that’s not too bad a return, but we wonder if the 6’2″, 27 year-old striker is the answer for Newcastle?
We don’t think so, although we suppose he wouldn’t cost too much, assuming that Everton would be willing to sell.
Beckford signed a four year deal when he signed for Everton last summer, but in short we just don’t think he would be a good buy for Newcastle.
What do you think?
