Newcastle United Interested In French U21 Defender

Sky Sports is reporting today that Newcastle may be interested in Standard Liege youngster, Eliaquim Mangala.

Eliaquim Mangala – 20 year old French U21 International;

Mangala is of Congolese descent and the lad is a French Youth international and currently plays for the under-21 team,  having made his debut in November, 2009 against Tunisia.

Mangala also holds a Belgian passport having lived in the country since he was five, and he has played 98 times with 4 goals for Standard Liege,  since he made his debut back in 2008, when he was just 17 years old.

It turns out that Spanish club Valencia are very interested in the player, but so far no deal has been done for the left sided defender, who has played 12 times for the French U21 side.

Benfica and Porto have also been linked with the highly rated player, but today his agent Fabrizio Ferrari had said his client would like to move Spain or England.

This is what Ferrari told the Portuguese press today:

“His future is in Spain or England,”  “Currently this is where he has received the most attractive offers, but nothing is signed yet.

“The dream was always was to find Mangala a competitive league like the Spanish or English.”

Sources in Belgium are reporting  that two English clubs, Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers are interested in the 6’2″ Paris-born defender.

We have no idea if this report is true, but the lad looks more than a decent prospect, and after yesterday’s performance of the back four, surely we need one or two defenders in before September 1st.

Comments welcome.

    Barton for n’zogbia obviously! just been watching yesterdays highlights on nufc tv, cabaye and ba looked pretty handy even though cabaye couldnt use his passing to the full extent cos he was in the holding role. Williamson and Forster… erm yeah

    My response from the last thread, Richyg.

    Aye, but given recent events, many are on tenterhooks and will assume that it is (rightly or wrongly). He knows it, so he shouldn’t insinuate and leave decent folk hanging.

    Same with the Tweet yesterday, either put up or shut up, he didn’t reveal anything new, just stirred already murky waters

    I think it’s either, in order –

    1) Something innocuous and unrelated to footy or;
    2) He’s closing down his Twitter account or;
    3) He’s been given a mutual termination of his contract.

    lost all my optimism!! we need more than 2 new players and quick especially if barton wants out. its frustrating as we have a quality midfield and are just missing one or two key position but ashley wont pay!! we love ashley to prove me wrong but i wouldnt bet on it

    Barton will cause some serious damage if he is to leave, unless he has received a golden ‘silence’ handshake.

    I’m sick to death of this, every year i get stick from my mates for supporting NUFC, but i ALWAYS defended this great, magnificent club, and was a proud loyal supporter, but to be honest, I have reached my limit, i can’t just sit here and watch this, for the first time in my life, i WILL NOT watch football this season, i mean whats the fekking point, think i’m going to support AFC Wimbeldon or Oxford ( My FIFA 11 Team…now in the Premier league)

    If it’s football related it’s not going to be good news.

    After the great season Joey had, a new contract should have been automatic.

    Not very good business by Ashley/Llambias making this personal.

    GG i know! Did you watch them yesterday? David Silva is still my favourite prem player that doesn’t play for us (for pure footballing reasons.) Mario rocket head balotelli is up there as welll. Today he said on italian tv he doesn’t like manchester as well. What is wrong with manchester?
