Strange news today that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is considering a move for Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan.
Gabriel Obertan – loan deal for next season?
But the immediate question is why?
While Gabriel is the type of youngster Newcastle want to bring to the club, he’s hardly had an outstanding time at the Red Devils over the last two seasons.
The 22 year-old joined Manchester United in 2009, and has so far played only 28 times for on of the world’s top clubs, with one goal.
The Pantin, France born youngster played for all of the French U21 sides, including 11 times for the U21 side. and he certainly has talent, but has been inconsistent in his time at United.
News is the 22-year-old is not happy at Old Trafford, and still has two years left on his current deal, and would be happy to seek pastures anew.
One question would be how much the youngster would cost, and he is said to have signed for the Red Devils from Bordeaux for about £3M in July of 2009.
Obertan joined Bordeaux back in 2005 but has made only 14 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils in the last two years, and he certainly would get a lot more playing time at Newcastle, and of course there’s little doubt he’s a skillful player.
One possibility would be a loan move with an option of buying the player outright next summer, for a pre-arranged fee, and that would seem to work for both clubs.
Having looked at Obertan’s record while writing this piece, he may not be too bad of a signing after all, if Newcastle brought him on loan for a season, and it would then be up to the young Frenchman to show what he has to offer Newcastle.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Tiote is back at Newcastle. Arrived last night. So, he’ll be in for the Fiorentina game. I’m sure Pardew will mention it during the interview.

Well a complex question my friend, the 1940’s defeat was not so clear than that.
The fact is 100,000 of french soldiers were killed in six weeks defending vaillantly the country. So there’s many reason for this defeat, but cowardice isn’t one of them.

I never said it was, your troops fought bravely in WW2 but the Germans were so modern, well equipped and numbered in a storng force. However, I’m quite sure they pulled the same trick on you that they did in WW1 in which they used Belgium as a pass through whilst distracting you at the border. I’ve seen a few documentaries on the French at the beginning of WW2 and while the Germans had Jeeps to transport them around, the French soldiers were using bikes. Goes to show how defeat was inevitable

Don’t waste time and effort (and money) looking for a midfield which is shaping up nicely. Cabaye has both Barton and Nolan’s best qualities, we know Tiote’s worth and the two wingers are better than the other names being touted about. Plus the six or so backups looking tasty in pre season.
Once Enrique is gone though.. LB anyone? Some players can play there at a stretch. Jonas most likely as he does it for Argentina, but that’s the biggest concern for us at the mo.
Doubt we’ll buy another striker when we have Ranger, Ameobi, Lovencrandz, Best and Ba. Think about it.. with one more you’ll be paying the wages of at least three players who won’t be making the bench each week. One will need to be shipped out in order to bring another in. Maybe that’s the issue.

He sounds talented but hasn’t been a regular at Man Utd.

Again it’s more complicated. The french army was as well motorized and equiped than the germans. It was even more tanks on our side.
The weakness was in the utilisation of this equipments. The fast movement german’s tactic (Blitzkrieg) was far superior to the french static defensive doctrine.
And theres a lot of other things, but well this indeed not a blog about military history…

Comment #66He can play a bit, but is very incosistent. If we can add consistency to his game, I would sign him. Cheap, young, and possibly a future star (With the right coaching?). Just to add to the French fighting spirit argument, the French do indeed have a good fighting spirit. Just google Eric Cantona / Palace fan and you will see what I mean.

Comment #67Theres no chance of this happening, just because we sign a few French players doesnt mean we want more. Im not saying hes not good and thats because tbh Ive never seen him play but I dont think we’d go for him tbh. I remember when we signed Rossi on loan from Man Utd and look at him not such a shame we never signed him. I honestly think our midfield is sorted for this season and we should just be looking at bringing in atleast 1 striker hopfully 2 and a LB to cover Jose whether he goes or not.

Comment #77Players like this guy come along every now and again for a snip their demed not good enuf for the big clubs and they go on and prove everyone wrong and become big assets to their clubs, Lassana Diara left chelsea for arsenal for 2mill then went to portsmouth for 5 and a year later went to Real for 20million, Adel tarabtt went to QPR for 1mill frm spurs and they value him at 15mill now, i read recently wign cud have signed De Hea for 2mill 18 months ago and he just moved to utd for 18mill.
