Strange news today that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is considering a move for Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan.
Gabriel Obertan – loan deal for next season?
But the immediate question is why?
While Gabriel is the type of youngster Newcastle want to bring to the club, he’s hardly had an outstanding time at the Red Devils over the last two seasons.
The 22 year-old joined Manchester United in 2009, and has so far played only 28 times for on of the world’s top clubs, with one goal.
The Pantin, France born youngster played for all of the French U21 sides, including 11 times for the U21 side. and he certainly has talent, but has been inconsistent in his time at United.
News is the 22-year-old is not happy at Old Trafford, and still has two years left on his current deal, and would be happy to seek pastures anew.
One question would be how much the youngster would cost, and he is said to have signed for the Red Devils from Bordeaux for about £3M in July of 2009.
Obertan joined Bordeaux back in 2005 but has made only 14 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils in the last two years, and he certainly would get a lot more playing time at Newcastle, and of course there’s little doubt he’s a skillful player.
One possibility would be a loan move with an option of buying the player outright next summer, for a pre-arranged fee, and that would seem to work for both clubs.
Having looked at Obertan’s record while writing this piece, he may not be too bad of a signing after all, if Newcastle brought him on loan for a season, and it would then be up to the young Frenchman to show what he has to offer Newcastle.
What do you think?

Comment #9He is talented and pacey with a decent cross on him.
ManUre only bought him for £3m so I would think we could broker a deal around that figure.
He just needs time on the pitch this lad, he cant get that with ManUre.
Ed, he has only scored one goal, think it was in Europe, but he is a winger not a striker.

Comment #12dont know much about him, but to have played 11 times for french under 21’s and to have been signed by Man utd wouldnt suggest he is crap. Could be wrong however but I would trust our scouts know more about talent and have seen him play more than most people on here.

Why stop at Tiote if we offer them all of our players over 20 then play a team of youngsters, we will be making so much money and then our young players can be sold for further profit

being serious, we have Fergie so there’s no need for this guy unless Pardew is going to play Fergie as a full back and if thats the case Pardew needs shooting
