There was news yesterday that Shane Long was a target of Leicester City.
Shane Long – headed to Premier League
And the news was that their manager Sven Goran Eriksson had even lodged a £7M bid for the player, and promotion rivals West Ham United were also reported to be interested in the Irish International striker.
But today Eriksson believes that Long will end up at a Premier League club, so he obviously is aware of some Premier League clubs that are now after the striker, who hit 25 goals in 50 games for Reading last season.
Newcastle scouts have come back with some glowing reports on the striker, but it’s still not known if Newcastle are really interested, although PL club linked with the player include Newcastle, West Brom, Sunderland (of course), and Everton.
This is what Eriksson said today:
“Long is one on the list but he may end up in the Premier League,”
24 year-old Shane would need to make the step up in class to the Premier League, but his performances for Ireland have been very good, and he is a natural goal poacher, and we even think he would fit in well at Newcastle.
For £7M he could be a good buy for Newcastle, and we need some of them quickly.
What do you think?

Comment #4I would be delighted if we got him in, I’m a big fan. I know most people are going to post that there’s no way we’ll be spending money but until September 1st I’m still hopeful

Comment #6Journal said today that we’re not in the running for him…probably right, £7 millions pretty steep for any championship player, and i’m not convinced he’s much more than a gloryfied work horse.

Comment #8He’ll need time to settle imo and are we prepared for that? We really need a proven goal scorer at this moment and I’m not sure if Long would hit the ground running.

Comment #10Despite all that’s gone on if we can bring in Long, Barnetta and a replacement for Jose i’ll be content (ish) That’s a big IF though unfortunately.
I refuse to be pessimistic until Sept 1st though. I’m managed (just) to keep positive throughout all the crap that’s been hoyed our way this summer from the press, the club and the dreaded rumour mill.

Comment #11Not overly happy. Think Best is better. The only way I can see this happen and it would make sense is if Best is on his way to Bham. Otherwise it’s a waste of money that could be spent on decent LB.

Thats not gonna work.
You would need to offer them £17 million plus them two players. (£7m for Long, £10m compensation for taking on the muppets!)

Comment #30Long is like a horse – just keeps galloping at the goal like Kevin Doyle does… Muckers as we call them… They just get stuck in… Am sure we can do a little better than that – dont you? FORLAN – what about him? He would be ace and would set us back what 7.5m… opinions?

lmao that is just brilliant.
So Owen Coyle would prefer to PAY for a player who has played so little football hes forgotten how to kick a ball than sign “the best english midfielder in the prem” on a free??!!
Im stunned…
Oh wait… maybe Joey just talks out his arse, maybe Joey ISNT that great? Nooooooooooooo, no way, in Joey “ex con, beats young boys up outside macdonalds, cry baby, child” Barton WE ALL TRUST.
You wait, Barcelona will snap him up reeeeal quick ;x
As for Long hes no better than what we have, move on please

Comment #40Not saying he is someone we should be going for but how did Oba Martins do at B’Ham last season on loan?
Dont think he played that much and just wonder has he still got it?
He is only 26, if that can be believed 🙂
If he was cheap would you consider getting him back?
