There were reports last night that Wigan had taken a firm interest in Joey Barton.
Joey Barton – Wigan interested in taking the player
And the news from Lee Ryder of the Evening Chronicle is that Rochdale also registered a rather cheeky interest in the player, who is still available on a free transfer from Newcastle.
We’re not sure what Joey is looking for, but if it is European competition and a wage that is near what he’s been getting at Newcastle for the last four years, which is said to be a little north of £60K/week, he will not get that at Wigan.
Everton registered an interest earlier in the week, and we thought the club may appeal to Joey because it’s his home town club, but the Toffees couldn’t match Joey’s wages.
And the other club said to be interested late last week was Stoke City, who also were unlikely to be able to match the Liverpudlian’s wages either.
The Wigan owner Dave Whelan said this last night:
“I would say ‘Roberto, I’m backing you’. He’s the boss and I let him be the boss. If Roberto would like to sign Barton, I’d try to get him.”
“When you watch Joey play, he’s a good player, make no mistake about that.” “I’ve never met the lad but people have told me that he’s a bit difficult to handle, he’s a bit hot-headed.”
“I think a football club should keep itself to itself, especially with the players and the staff.” “I just think Joey should calm down, play football, because he’s a very, very good player, and my advice would be to be quiet, say nothing, and go on the field and do your stuff.”
That’s good advice from Dave, and we only hope that Joey will take it, but that’s also what Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has been telling the lad after he totally disrupted things at the game at Leeds last Sunday.
The clubs that are coming in for Joey should tell the player something, and even though there are constant reports that Manchester United are interested in him, at best he would be a squad player there, and he wouldn’t get too many games.
Not a situation we think Joey would like at all.
Barton will not be involved today in the home game against Fiorentina, and was not involved in the Newcastle Reserves’ 2-1 win at Ashington last night either.
