Newcastle fans could see a good start to the week, as Gabriel Obertan is already on Tyneside and at the Benton Training grounds right now, having his medical.
Gabriel Obertan – expected to sign today for the Magpies
We hope that news comes through shortly that the fast, skillful and direct winger has signed a five year deal for Newcastle, and that will be a good start to this week, after an absolutely terrible week last week for the Newcastle club and its fans.
Certainly the more we look at what Obertan can do, even though he did not get too many games in his two years at Manchester United, the boy has tremendous speed and skill, and could well become a favorite with Newcastle fans.
The next step for Gabriel is to use the skills he has to provide consistent displays week in and week out, like true professionals do.
Alan Pardew talked about the 22 year-old today:
“I said I wanted to bring pace into the team.” “It was lacking last year and Gabriel will definitely bring that to the team.”
“He will be at the training ground today and having his medical.”
Obertan started his career at Bordeuax back in 2006, and he eventually played 79 times with six goals for the French side, before signing on at Manchester United for £3M in July of 2009.
Gabriel has played 28 times with one goal for the Red Devils, and as long as everything goes well with his medical today, he is expected to become a Newcastle player, and the fee is said to be around £3M.
That would be a good start, so who’s next in this week?

Comment #7Burni, I’ve seen him play for man U and never really a player I would have rated highly.
He does seem to come with a lot of recommendations so hopefully he’ll settle, relax and play well for us if he does sign.

Comment #8so where does Marveaux fit? havent seen much of him yet. Will Obertan be a starter or slot into the ranks of midfielders that wont see much playing time this season?

Comment #9I have to say I’ve seen Obertan a couple of times and he’s never impressed me greatly, the best thing i have to go off in his favour is that the man u fans dont seem very happy about him leaving

Comment #10Hope Obertan fulfiils his massive potential at our club. Seems to be really good in Manchester United preseason. Looks a really improved player. Hope he gets the games and scores some goals as well. And i pray he becomes 1 of the best right winger in the league next season. Good luck!

I think obertan could be used in two roles either RW or ST, i have a feeling its the latter if JB stays… dont ask why but i just get the feeling thats the case, through balls from midfield and his pace??? hes bound to score a couple

Comment #13@BelfastMagpie87: No I don’t think he’s any better than Ameobi or Lovenkrands. Nor does Carr or Pardew so moot point.

Erm Yes! Are you seriously debating that??
Lovenkrands scored 13 in 29 appearances in the champ and long got 23 in 45 games last season and the years before that you may ask? didnt get out of single digits!
He is in no way better than what we have end of story, if you think otherwise you havent seen him play enough because honestly he is a GOOD (not great) champ player

Comment #19Obertan is a clown most of the man u youtube videos are taking the p*** out of him, I have not seen a single video that make him look good, just hope we don’t pay him that much we cant get rid of him when we actually hire a competent manager.

Comment #29No matter what anyone says, our central midfield whether it beTiote, Cabaye, Vuckic, Gosling Barton, is probably one of the strongest in the Premier league and next season we will see how we will run the game from them players, and they will be soo vital to us winning games next season.

Comment #31a lot of guys were on about the financial fair play rules being bent by the big clubs. The rules are not meant to prevent clubs from spending but to ensure that the clubs spend within their means. The other aspect is the owners of clubs cannot mortgage the future of their clubs to aid their spending spree and if they want to pump money into the club they can do it as equity and not loans so even when the owners want to bail the clubs will not be in a position like leeds or pompey 🙂 What it means is other than the few clubs with sugardaddy owners can’t take out huge loans to fund their spending and there will be a level playing field outside those few.

Comment #40Ed why was last week “absolutely terrible” no one died did they? As for signing Obertan he may be fast but his end product is very, very poor. We have better players in the reserves than this kid.
