Obertan Impressed With Alan Pardew’s Plans for Newcastle

1:21 pm, Tuesday, August 9th, 2011 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 111 Comments

There seems little doubt that 22 year-old Gabriel Obertan is delighted to have joined Newcastle United today.

Gabriel Obertan – impressed with Pardew speech on Newcastle

In his interviews since signing along the dotted line today, what comes across with the French 22 year-old is a great excitement, and whatever Alan told the lad about his plans for the future of Newcastle, it certainly impressed Gabriel.

Obertan says Alan gave him a great speech which pleased him a lot.  We’d like to hear that speech too!

Obertan joins Sylvain Marveaux, Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye and 18 year-old Mehdi Abeid as five French-born and French speaking players who all have lots of skills and will change the way in which Newcastle play, and for the better too.

And when you think that Ben Arfa and Dan Gosling has but five appearance sin total between them last season, then Newcastle have seven new players so far this summer, with a left back and striker likely to still arrive before September 1st rolls around.

And if we can get those last two players through the door, that would be seven new players on Tyneside, and effectively nine new players with Ben Arfa and Gosling included, which is  not too bad at all.

Gabriel spoke to the local Newcastle press corps today:

“I already know Hatem.” “I don’t know Sylvain Marveaux Demba Ba or Yohan Cabaye but I am glad to be part of the same squad as them.”

“It is very exciting to be here.” “These times ahead can be exciting for us as a group.”  “Two of the signings in Marveaux and Cabaye are two of France’s most technical players.”

“I had a chat with the manager about his plans and he gave me a great speech which pleased me a lot.”

“There is a lot of ambition here and it is a great challenge for me.”  “I have heard so much about the atmosphere here, I cannot wait to impress these fans.”

Alan Pardew will now have to decide what he thinks his best team is for the first league game of the season at St. James’ park on Saturday, and w in would be a terrific way to start the new season after all the negativity of the last few weeks.

Howay The Lads!!

Comments welcome.

What a change in mood one decent transfer can make. Its all you have to do Ashley to keep fans happy.

Been excited since the last four signings but glad people are NOW catching on.

Cant wait for saturday gonna be buzzing and arsenal have a lot of injuries could be a classic start

I know its frustrating to see where did the 35million go. But that was before when Pardew and co lied to us, saying the 35million will be reinvested into the squad.

But recently Pardew came out and admitted indirectly that it was a lie. And we are a selling club and that we don’t have much money. Throughtout Ashley rubbish regime i just hated the lies and i just wanted to truth.

Pardew has come clean now and i respect it. Each season we will sell before we can buy. We will always look to buy bargains and hope they can over achieve with us. Its a gamble which i think is the right direction for us.

ilovetoon8788 – all I can say is you are easily pleased mate – Pardew saying we have no cash sets massive alarm bells of for me mate and asks more questions than it answers… thankfully most people aren’t having the wool pulled over their eyes so easily.

  • 14 Andy // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:31 PM

Obertan wants to be a striker one day. Wonder if his favourite player was henry. Glad to have him on board now. Hoefully get pieters in as comp for lb and a striker and i would consider this a good window. HWTL!

  • 15 NUFC_Richyg01 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:32 PM

Pardews patter works again, just hope the wheels dont fall off when they realise the manager, players and fans ambitions are not matched by the owner.

  • 16 Magpietillidie22 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:33 PM

    @10 ilovetoon8788

Not entirely true, he just said we can’t compete with the clubs in europe. We dont have that income or that draw for players.

But we will be self sufficient next year which is a huge plus allowing us to spend more money on players and if we get back into europe we wont need to sell unless we get ridiculous offers.

BTW look at arsenal, struggling to keep fab and nas… its not just NUFC look around, all clubs know every player has a price

  • 17 Andy // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:34 PM

This is obertan at his v best. Let’s hope he can do the business for us!

  • 18 Meeks135 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:35 PM

Positive words from an exciting lad!

Hope he proves to be another steal by the scouting team.

From his vid’s on youtube (extent of my scouting skills) he seems to play all his stuff on the left?? Very strong competition down there now!

  • 19 ToonDownSouth // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:35 PM

But I think most people have accepted that you have two options – either do something about it, or live with it.

No use moaning on blogs all day is there. We should forget the other rubbish, and support our players & coaching staff.

  • 20 Strandy11 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:37 PM

could be a great signing lets hope we can really challenge for top ten again and i would be over the moon with that

  • 21 boater // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:38 PM

magpie – get real. We are GROOMING players for resale – fattening the birds up for Christmas.. Arsenal are bringing youth through to integrate into the first team. They have fought tooth and nail to keep Fibreglass and Nasri – neither of whom have gone – should nasri go they have just spent 10mil on chamberlain as a replacement – GET REAL wake up and smell the bore holes.

  • 22 Meeks135 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:38 PM

    ToonDownSouth @19

It’s not ideal, but im my opinion it is getting the job done (some what controversially) on a tight budget!

If we play good exciting football, have a good cup run and show we can be a decent force in the PL I am happy to have the “wool pulled over my eyes” as Boater puts it.

  • 23 ross armstrong // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:40 PM

i honestly think obertan is gna be on fire down our right wing this season!!! man utd the idiots didnt give him a chance!! 95% on man utd fans didnt want him 2 leave!!

  • 24 Jail for Ashley // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:41 PM

Why do so manypeople get excited about the club saving money, its not as though the price of a ticket pint or a pie come down is it,its just your hard earned money is going into Ashleys pocket instead of players who arent on pay as you play deals because of long term injuries they’ve got or had in the past

  • 25 boater // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:41 PM

ToonDownSouth – One of the popular myths of this and other blogs is that somehow being critical isn’t supporting, but saying woohoo everything’s great is supporting?!?!? Neither has anything to do with supporting or not. On Saturday I’ll be supporting the team all the way… doesn’t mean I can’t respond to the fantasists and apologists on here – telling me Obertan is a better signing than zog!?!?! for e.g. – who by their very unquestioning, pliable nature allow Ashley to get away with it in the first place.

  • 26 ichrisho // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:43 PM

@Boater – Pi$$ off dude – Talk about Chain around your neck. Go do one and support someone else.

  • 27 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:43 PM

    @boater // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:30 PM

I’m not being easily pleased mate. I’m just accepting the truth which is out now. Which is, 1)we are a selling club. 2)money on transfers may or may NOT be invested back into the squad. 3) we will sell before we can buy. 4) this is a gamble.

This is the truth which i’ve known from last year. But Pardew only admitted this now. Why do you think we are grooming our youngsters? Its for high resale value. So that if players Yven Moyo becomes a world class winger he will go for about 20-30million as well. It sucks but its a gamble and i feel this is the right direction for the club.

We are simply hoping that players over achieve with us. Like Obertan might(i hope). We are raking in more profits and i’m sure in 3 seasons time we will be buying players clubs like Liverpool can’t.

So i’m saying this is a good step forward. Ashley is playing it smart now but it just accept it.

  • 28 boater // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:44 PM

Jail for Ashley – that has bugged me all summer too. This blog is full of would-be accountants totally brain-washed by the club’s bogus model rhetoric.

I would hazard a guess those putting financial prudence above 1st team assets a) isn’t attending matches at all b) spends too much time on Championship Manager

  • 29 DJM TOON // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:45 PM

one thing thats got to be said is that how we conduct ourselves in the transfer market is excellent.

personally i really do feel a decent striker will be coming in this window, and if we get sturridge i might just cum in my pants

  • 30 boater // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:47 PM

  • 31 ichrisho // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:47 PM

  • 33 ichrisho // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:49 PM

  • 38 NUFC_Richyg01 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:52 PM

    I wouldn’t go that far.

There are a lot of fans who love the club but can’t stand Ashley.

I respect what he has done, but I would respect more if the savings were ploughed back into the team.

  • 39 Meeks135 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:53 PM

I agree that it is hugely irritating and frustrating that our club seems to put re-sale value first, but gone are the days of CL football at the club and thus gone are the days of us attracting Europe’s elite.

I do not see another way where we can get, young exciting players that are current internationals, on lower wages than some of our current squad without using a model where value is placed first.

Until we reach the coveted CL lands this is the way we are going to have to conduct our business, with tight shrewd business deals that have a higher element of risk than buying proven quality players – we simply don’t have the pull or financial cout anymore.

  • 40 NUFC_Richyg01 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:53 PM

When could you last say that mate??

  • 41 boater // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:54 PM

“ashley haters are NUFC haters”… I think that might be the most amazing thing I’ve read on here for quite a while. As for the abusive language: it just lacks class all round- don’t do it mate.

  • 42 Jail for Ashley // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:55 PM

Spot on boater.and ilove toon8788 I dont think your easily excited or easily pleased I think you’re f@#@#ing deluded, what on earth makes you think that Ashleys going to hang around for the long term and turn all these profits that he’s making from OUR club into a top force again,if that was his aim he’d at least come out and half say so ,cant you see hes going to gamble on staying in the Premier league long enough to strip us bare and try to claim as much as his money back as he can,so get off your Championship manager and realise this is a REAL club not yours or Ashleys little plaything

    @Meeks135 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:53 PM

Yup its frustrating but maybe just maybe this group of lads can over achieve and bring us to Europe next season. Maybe in 10 years time we will be financially so good we might be competing with the likes of Barcelona and Bayern or Madrid. You never know.

Its a gamble, but i think we should accept it and get behind the lads. You can’t deny this has been an excellent window except for a striker we desperately need.

  • 45 ochytoon // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:56 PM

    @Jail for Ashley // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:55 PM

I know its frustrating for you. But just get behind the lads this season and see where we end up at the end of the season. This season will tell us if this is the right way or not. If this current group of lads just manage to avoid relegation than this is the wrong way and we need to plough money back into the squad.

If we finish in the top 10, than i’d say you’d be singing Ashley’s praises yourself!

  • 47 GeordieGerman “allez les gars!” // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:58 PM

Welcome Gabriel Obertoon to NUFC!! I for 1 am glad to have you could care less about the negativity on the boards cant ruin my excitement for the season.. Looking forward to see the Lads this season and what type of football we will play hope we have a relatively injury free season since injury free is just not possible, would love to see the squad play to its full potential and that would be a top 8 finish IMO.. Even think we could do better then that world beater some of u make Insomnia out to be and the dirty villains..Haha really dont get the fascination with him and some NUFC supporters?!? Anyhow HWTL!!!!!

  • 49 ToonDownSouth // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:00 PM

Ignore the ridiculous comments about how you can’t hate Ashley without hating NUFC (lol?), and others about how excited we should all be that our accounts are pretty (which they’re still not, I’ve looked).

However, those of us who aren’t brain dead are probably going to have to just deal with it. I just think that to be honest, we’ve heard it all before. We all know how poor our owners is, but the same comments are being written day after day after day in their hundreds.

It would be better to send them all to the national press, and hope they run a few stories on fan discontent, just to try and get it out there.

  • 50 Meeks135 // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:00 PM

    ilovetoon8788 // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:56 PM

I think Europe this season is a bit of a push! I would be happy to prove that this squad is good enough to easily secure PL football, upset some of the bigger teams and play exciting football.

It would also show that Ashley is not here to asset strip as he is buying a team that is capable of exciting football in a strict financial budget. What business man would destroy something he owns, therefore decreasing value!

It’s comments like that that I can’t stand

  • 51 lgnufc // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:00 PM

boater – sorry to dampen your mood with positive comments. You truly are a fool. Im just excited for the game on sat. You sir, can get a life.

  • 53 Durham_Toon // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:00 PM

Supporting the team (as we all do) has nothing at all to do with the whole pro/anti Ashley argument. I hate MA with a passion but I love the club, they are not the same thing. People should make the comments they feel are justified good or bad, supporting the team on Saturday is not related and should be taken as a given.

Anyhow on topic, for me Obertan is a very average player, lots of pace but not much else. Our scouting team have proven they know what they’re doing however so I’ll get behind the lad and hope he proves me wrong!

  • 54 ichrisho // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:01 PM

@37 and 40 – Remind Boater will you? We are looking up – If we get a good striker in – we are looking good. French, Dutch, Argentinian, English… Nice spectrum of internationals in the senior squad..

  • 55 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:01 PM

    @brklyngeordie // Aug 9, 2011 at 1:59 PM

Yes! I can’t wait to see our future Ronaldo(Obertan) and Cabaye and Demba Ba can do for us. Marveaux will add the extra quality down the flanks. Tiote will be magnificent as usual. And Ben Arfa(if he can avoid being in the medical room) will be brilliant as usual. Exciting squad we have. We have such a good attack but our defence is crap.

  • 93 Hebburn Mag // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:30 PM

With all of injuries that Arsenal apparently have I think if we put the strongest squad possible out there not including Ben Afra obviously I think we can and will get a result. Our midfield will over runn theres even if Fabregas plays and should we have two pacey strikers on the wings we will get goals no doubt about that. And to win against Arsenal on the first game of the season can give us a push to do well in the next few games.

I have to admit I am not a fan of Obertan but now he’s signed I will do my bit on Saturday to try to turn him into the quality of player I feel we should be after, but at least he starts with a clean sheet, and the worlds at this kids feet it up to him, to show he’s got the b***’s for it, it seems we have a new buzzword “to over achieve” well our fans have done this for the last 60 years so its time the team and the manager joined the party. lets hope the blob wakes up and realises its still possible for him to over achieve too.

  • 95 Hebburn Mag // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:32 PM

two pacey wingers on the wings even 🙂

  • 96 v FrA NuFc 8 // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:32 PM

@Hebburn Mag- Agreed, 4 days and counting can’t wait 😀

  • 97 Felipe // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:33 PM

You really have to try very hard to be negative about the team now. But come on boater you can try harder its fun to watch… 🙂

  • 98 Hebburn Mag // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:42 PM

Ive just watched that Gavriel Obertan Tour 2011 video and he looks the real deal, hes got pace, hes got skills, he can cross and he should get us a few goals, we havent really had many winger as of late that possess all of them and if he does well he can/will be one for the future. From what I saw of Marvaux on Saturday he looked like he has a bit of pace too which can only be a good thing for the team. Onwards and Upwards from now on!

  • 99 Felipe // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:45 PM

@Hebburn Mag 57: Yeah, I watched that video too but Durham Toon says he got pace and not much else so we’re probably mistaken… 🙂

  • 100 Hebburn Mag // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:54 PM

Yeah maybe I really hope not though coz I know videos dont show the whole picture but he looks like the type of player we need. Already having a lot of french speaking players in the team can hopfully help him to settle in quickly and help him to grown and fullfill his potential. Its really hard to pick what our best midfield would be now with soo many great midfields in our squad that includes the likes of Vuckic too.

  • 101 17irmy23 // Aug 9, 2011 at 2:57 PM

He has pace to burn but is possibly going to be used to solve our problems up top, gives flexibility to operate in a 433 i would say. He lacks technique from what Ive seen but is quick to spot a pass and run onto them

  • 102 ichrisho // Aug 9, 2011 at 3:12 PM

I think we have now a TOP 10 side. Finally 🙂 With a good striker who can help BA we might even nick 8th with some good results.

  • 103 jesperfuglsang // Aug 9, 2011 at 3:51 PM

@Jail for Ashley of cause he’s going to take profit out of the club; I think that is obvious by now. He has poured allot of his own money into the club – guess he wants them back.

By in the end I think Ashley is a businessman and when the day comes, I think he wants as much money for the club as he can. So I don’t think he’s go to strip us naked.

He will upgrade St. James Park and our facilities to make the club more attractive. He will build upon the squard and he will sell any player as long as some one comes along and pay ridiculous money.

That’s how it is; I just hope the gamble pays of be cause it’s a 50/50 as I see it. Hopefully one day he will sell NUFC, and we can all just hope it’s not to one of those foreigner millionaires who just sees NUFC as another playground..

good piece with a good video

Boater, stop being so miserable. With this midfield we wont miss Nolan. I am annoyed with how we had the wool pulled over our eyes by MA, and i would imagine Feliope and Co are aswell – it was a lie after all – but I’m tired of people getting on Pardews back. The man has one arm tied, but front up to the media and does the talking that Llambias should do. He is tacytically more astute than Hughton, and very much a student of the game. We hated Allardyce for his football, at the least this guy is changing all that – very quickly – and at a very low cost. I want a good striker brought on like you, and if that costs 10 mill, then so be it. But if we spot a player with huge potential abroad at 5K, then i would strongly consider it. However, i’d like to see us flash the cash if its what the team needs, and that has to override conservative financial policies of MA. But isnt is great not to get shafted any more by the likes of Deportivo???

From now on, Newcastle United will be known as “Chateau-Nouveau-Unifiée”.

Nickname “The Magpies” will henceforth be referred to “Les Pies Bavardes”

And the Toon Army will be called “L’Armée de la Ville”.

Also, Mike Ashley can be called “Le Bâtard Graisses Cocknée”.

    That is all.

“I have heard so much about the atmosphere here, I cannot wait to impress these fans.”

Ok lads lets prove it on Saturday! So much is said about the poor atmosphere at Prem home games (us included) and when compared to years ago the critics do have a point! However lets show these lads who we are and really make a hell of a noise!!! Can’t wait to be part of the Gallowgate ROAR again!

  • 108 MikeAshleyDie // Aug 9, 2011 at 6:52 PM

Just watched his first interview for us, seems like a genuine lad who enjoys his football. Really looking forward to seeing him in action. I think he’ll be a huge success!

  • 109 MikeAshleyDie // Aug 9, 2011 at 6:53 PM

Can’t wait for Saturday, south east corner and gallowgate?

  • 110 Real Toon Army Fan // Aug 10, 2011 at 3:52 AM

May i remind everyone that whilst im so chuffed with the midfield, everyone is forgetting to mention a certain player amongst it. Someone who looks amazing, another check tiote, was our best player with gosling on loan, Mehdi Albeid. Looks like this boy is going to be a pure class act. We have a cup team now and i think this cup team could go a long long way. For me cabaye and tiote only need play and worry now about getting us in europe, vuckic, gosling, albeid have gotta get games to wanna stay and develop. Bring the cups and europe home boys!!!!!
