It’s a good day for Newcastle fans in that the club have signed the fifth new player of the transfer window.
Gabriel Obertan – after signing for Newcastle today
22 year-old Gabriel Obertan joined Newcastle today on a five-year deal from Premier League Champions Manchester United.
The French under-21 international Obertan played a total of 28 times for the Red Devils with one goals , and he adds to Newcastle’s growing wing presence, in that the club now have Obertan, Marveaux, Gosling, Gutierrez and ben Arfa who can both play on either wing.
And we shouldn’t forget a certain Joey Barton, who maybe could be used in central midfield next season, and of course Gosling can also play in central midfield, and Ben Arfa can play as a withdrawn striker up front, so Alan pardew seems to have quite a few options for next season.
The 22-year-old winger is a product of the French Football Academy, Clairefontaine, and he started his career at Bordeaux, where he made his debut as a 17 year-old five years ago.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew had this to say to the official Newcastle site after the signing today:
“Gabriel is a player I’ve watched for the last couple of seasons since he arrived at Manchester United.”
“He has great pace and excellent technique and he has improved his power in the last 12 months and is ready now to make a real impact in the Premier League.”
“I contacted Sir Alex about him early at the start of the summer to see if there was an opportunity to bring him to Newcastle, but it wasn’t until Wayne Routledge joined Swansea that we were able to bring him in.”
“His best years are ahead of him, which is exactly what we want at this club, and with the backing of our magnificent fans I’m sure he will prove an excellent signing for us.”
Gabriel will be in the reckoning for a first team place in the side against Arsenal on Saturday evening, and with Joey Barton also now likely to be available for selection, there will be quite some competition for the two wing positions at the Newcastle club next season, and that has to be good.
We wonder if Argentine Jonas Gutierrez will now be available for sale, just a thought, and probably a bad one at that.

Comment #43I get the feeling most of you doubt Demba Ba will score goals for us. Why is this so?

Comment #44@39 – Fair enough but I am not even sure if we have £14m flying around. All strikers nowadays cost too much…. £7m for Shane Long is desperation tactics by Hodgson… how do you convince a player to move to West Brom – they think its a cheese in France 🙂

Comment #48@44 thats the problem when you look at buying players in your own league, people dont want to sell someone to a rival team only for them to come back and haunt you. Pardew needs to look to portugal, brazil and argentina for his striker due to low wages in those leagues and willingness to sell for lower prices.

Comment #49@48 – Good point but bigfatcashley is not going to hand over that money unless AP says he wants him and Carr gives the nod and wink to it. We have about 2 weeks so dont know. I reckon they have a list of players and Erding was top with Gamiero then Gervinho then its Sturridge, Long and Bendtner… (Last one I do hope not)

Comment #53Good signing, although I have serious concerns about us at the back, colo needs to play with a tall comanding CB and taylor aeint it, he for some reason un nervous colo, some of the defending in the forientina game was terrible, continuing on frm WBA game, very sloppy , back to the old days, do that in PL wer guna be slaughterd, Bassong, Upson, Dann, Boyatta, Petiers, Bellamy, up front on a loan, or sturidge if we can get him we should be in good shape

Comment #54@ adam20692. ok, he looks pretty good (although youtube scouting is known to be troublesome(denis wobbly eyes anyone??)) Not sure we’d be first in the queue to get him as bigger euro clubs are always on the lookout for the next brazil mega star.

Comment #57@markaccus, I think big clubs would be willing to let us take a punt at him then come in when his contract is running out, plus cant hurt to take a punt at it lol As for CB why not consider david luguano played for uruaguy in copa america, b perfect for colo

Comment #58why does everyone want Bendtner?? He is crap… I come from Denmark, and even all the Danes say he is crap. We want someone who is fast and agile upfront. We already have Ba, Best and Ameobi who play like Bendtner and they are better than him!

Comment #59Great signing, I think he will do quite well given a decent run in the team. Considering he is only 1million more than Routledge, makes it an excellent deal.
Erik Pieters and Daniel Sturridge on a permanent transfer and I’ll be well happy. Bendtner is also ok but may prove disruptive. His confidence/cockiness may rub the others up the wrong way, decent player though
