It’s a good day for Newcastle fans in that the club have signed the fifth new player of the transfer window.
Gabriel Obertan – after signing for Newcastle today
22 year-old Gabriel Obertan joined Newcastle today on a five-year deal from Premier League Champions Manchester United.
The French under-21 international Obertan played a total of 28 times for the Red Devils with one goals , and he adds to Newcastle’s growing wing presence, in that the club now have Obertan, Marveaux, Gosling, Gutierrez and ben Arfa who can both play on either wing.
And we shouldn’t forget a certain Joey Barton, who maybe could be used in central midfield next season, and of course Gosling can also play in central midfield, and Ben Arfa can play as a withdrawn striker up front, so Alan pardew seems to have quite a few options for next season.
The 22-year-old winger is a product of the French Football Academy, Clairefontaine, and he started his career at Bordeaux, where he made his debut as a 17 year-old five years ago.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew had this to say to the official Newcastle site after the signing today:
“Gabriel is a player I’ve watched for the last couple of seasons since he arrived at Manchester United.”
“He has great pace and excellent technique and he has improved his power in the last 12 months and is ready now to make a real impact in the Premier League.”
“I contacted Sir Alex about him early at the start of the summer to see if there was an opportunity to bring him to Newcastle, but it wasn’t until Wayne Routledge joined Swansea that we were able to bring him in.”
“His best years are ahead of him, which is exactly what we want at this club, and with the backing of our magnificent fans I’m sure he will prove an excellent signing for us.”
Gabriel will be in the reckoning for a first team place in the side against Arsenal on Saturday evening, and with Joey Barton also now likely to be available for selection, there will be quite some competition for the two wing positions at the Newcastle club next season, and that has to be good.
We wonder if Argentine Jonas Gutierrez will now be available for sale, just a thought, and probably a bad one at that.
Howay The Lads!!

Comment #9Good job. If we can atleast sell Enrique for 7-8million. We can replace him with Pieters. And then sign another striker for 4-5million. Total net spend could be just 1 million. Fantastic business so far. Have to applaud Ashley for that.

Comment #13We certainly appear to have huge options in midfield and out wide. All we need now is a STRIKER who can score the goals from the chances that our midfield and wide players will undoubtedly create.
Its not bloody rocket science is it!!!! With a Shearer type number 9 he would score for fun with the creative players we now have – We have only had SEVEN MONTHS to get him in, the season starts in FOUR DAYS and we are still waiting to find out where our Number NINE is?????

Comment #14Roshan – i read Ed’s stories everyday and your usual comment is “We need a stricker”, can you please explain to me what a stricker is as i have been following footy for 20 years and have never heard that term…

Comment #15ilovetoon8778 – yes you do have to applaud him for having a net spend so low, but six weeks ago we were all told that the £35 mill from Carroll would go back into the club, so why are we spending pittance?

Comment #19I’m really confused as to why we haven’t gone for Shane Long. Exactly what we need – pace up front! – and looks like he’ll go to WBA for only £6 million.
Seems silly really, I’m quite confused…

Comment #23Just been having a look on youtube at the lad, from the videos I’ve seen, he seems pretty composed on the ball, and has good strength.
On another note, been talking to my mates about transfers, most of them are big club supporters (Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea) and they seem quite jealous about us signing Cabaye, for the money we got him for.

Comment #26Good work Pardew, Ashley and Co. We have replaced a guy who was making no impression on the league, with a guy who has real potential to do so, for small bucks. We may have our issues about Ashley, but no more Luque’s, Michael Bastard Owens etc for us….

Im confused how you put pace and long together? Am i missing something? I dont think he could out run Sol Campbell lol
There are so many better options than Long who before last season couldnt get into double digits in the championship
Long has been avoided for a reason and i for one am glad.
If we sign a top striker I may wet myself

I know its frustrating to see where did the 35million go. But that was before when Pardew and co lied to us, saying the 35million will be reinvested into the squad.
But recently Pardew came out and admitted indirectly that it was a lie. And we are a selling club and that we don’t have much money. Throughtout Ashley rubbish regime i just hated the lies and i just wanted to truth.
Pardew has come clean now and i respect it. Each season we will sell before we can buy. We will always look to buy bargains and hope they can over achieve with us. Its a gamble which i think is the right direction for us.

To me, it would be ridiculous to let Nolan go because we wouldn’t pay his wages, only to pay Routlege, Xisco, Smith, Perch, and all the other rubbish a combined 200k a week to sit in the reserves 😛
I think Ashley really wants to get rid of those players. Ideally they’d probably like to have a tiny squad and rely on youngsters for depth.

Comment #39@35 Surely that just proves the point that it would be a good idea, sounds as if he was good or did he leave on sour terms? also even so we buy him for 14 mill then move him in 2 years for 20 isnt that what ashley is all about?

Comment #40@ichrisho, is that you Derek? Haha, the only way you will get me back to SJP is the day the fans are treated with respect. Wor lass got me a Toon top but I took it back. My son now supports Man U so he wont have to put up with what I have had to.
