The Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail are reporting that Stoke are in talks with Newcastle’s Joey Barton about a move to the Potters.
Joey Barton – could leave Newcastle
Stoke manager Tony Pulis met with Barton’s agent Willie McKay on Wednesday, and wants to agree a deal with Barton, whom Stoke can get from Newcastle for nothing, at least in transfer fees.
It looks like Stoke think Joey would be a good acquisition for them, and if Barton wants to go and play for Stoke, so be it, since he seems to have done irreparable harm to his relationships inside the Newcastle club.
With new boy Gabriel Obertan, Sylvain Marveaux, Dan Gosling, Ben Arfa and others who can play out on the right wing, Newcastle already have the personnel in place, should Joey decide to leave the club, and yet they may still bring in someone new before September 1st..
Joey’s blotted his copy book in the last week or so big time, and not only at Newcastle, but with the football public in large, and he’s again come across as a trouble-maker.
That’s exactly what his reputation was when he was at his former club Manchester City, and before Newcastle signed him in the summer of 2007.
If he does move it will be a similar move to former captain Kevin Nolan, who got the deal he had wanted at Newcastle, but had to drop down a division and move to a smaller club, West Ham, to get it.
And if Barton does join Stoke, we could well see Newcastle renew their interest in Swiss winger Tranquillo Barnetta, since Alan Pardew has said that any player leaving the club in the next three weeks, will be replaced.
And Pardew also had hinted yesterday that things were still not all well with Joey, and that he had to fully buy into the Newcastle club and their direction, if he wanted to stay on Tyneside, and there would be no more dressing room rantings allowed from the Liverpudlian.
Looks to us that he may not have been willing to do that, and of course his outlook as a free agent next summer would not have been too bright either, with no bigger clubs than Newcastle interested in him.
We also expect Jose Enrique to move out before September 1st, and then at least all the players in the squad will want to be at Newcastle.
