Shola Ameobi has just signed an extension to his Newcastle contract, which was to run out next summer.
Alan Pardew congratulates Shola Ameobi on new contract
Shola made his debut for Newcastle way back in 2000, when the great Bobby Robson was managing the club, and he has signed a two year extension, which will keep him at his home town club for three more years, when he will be 32.
There was news that talks had stalled with the Nigerian born striker earlier in the summer, but it seems things got worked out, and the 28 year-old had this to say at the Benton Training grounds today:
“All I’ve ever wanted is to play for Newcastle United, and it is a really happy day for me.”
“Newcastle is, and always will be, my club, and I’m looking forward immensely to the next three years, beginning this Saturday with the new season opener against Arsenal.”
“I would also like to thank the board and the manager for their continued support, which is very much appreciated.”
Alan Pardew sees Shola as a strong presence in the Newcastle dressing room, and of course Shola is a local lad, and Alan wanted to keep him at the club, as he had this to say today:
“We are delighted to have confirmed Shola’s new contract.”
“He has done a terrific job for me since I’ve been at the club and he is also a great character to have around the place. It is important to have continuity, and keeping Shola on board helps us achieve that aim.”
“It is also great for the club that his younger brother Sammy is developing well and we hope he can go on to have a successful career at Newcastle.”
The one thing we’d like to see from Shola next season is that he is available for more games, because in any one season, he seems to miss about half the games with injuries.
But on his game, big Shola is almost unplayable, and we hope he has one of his best ever seasons for the Magpies next season.
Shola has scored 70 goals for Newcastle in his 303 appearances.
