Shola Ameobi has just signed an extension to his Newcastle contract, which was to run out next summer.
Alan Pardew congratulates Shola Ameobi on new contract
Shola made his debut for Newcastle way back in 2000, when the great Bobby Robson was managing the club, and he has signed a two year extension, which will keep him at his home town club for three more years, when he will be 32.
There was news that talks had stalled with the Nigerian born striker earlier in the summer, but it seems things got worked out, and the 28 year-old had this to say at the Benton Training grounds today:
“All I’ve ever wanted is to play for Newcastle United, and it is a really happy day for me.”
“Newcastle is, and always will be, my club, and I’m looking forward immensely to the next three years, beginning this Saturday with the new season opener against Arsenal.”
“I would also like to thank the board and the manager for their continued support, which is very much appreciated.”
Alan Pardew sees Shola as a strong presence in the Newcastle dressing room, and of course Shola is a local lad, and Alan wanted to keep him at the club, as he had this to say today:
“We are delighted to have confirmed Shola’s new contract.”
“He has done a terrific job for me since I’ve been at the club and he is also a great character to have around the place. It is important to have continuity, and keeping Shola on board helps us achieve that aim.”
“It is also great for the club that his younger brother Sammy is developing well and we hope he can go on to have a successful career at Newcastle.”
The one thing we’d like to see from Shola next season is that he is available for more games, because in any one season, he seems to miss about half the games with injuries.
But on his game, big Shola is almost unplayable, and we hope he has one of his best ever seasons for the Magpies next season.
Shola has scored 70 goals for Newcastle in his 303 appearances.
Comments welcome.

Comment #86Where has everyone got the idea that we’re going to play one up front from? I can see Ba & Shola in our first 11 unless we sign a new striker.

Comment #87Jayphoto, spot on. I have no idea where all these doubters come from. as a 4th choice striker, he a decent, DECENT back up. 2 yrs only as oppose to 4! look at the positives lads! no doubt fatman and pardew have been screwing us up and think we supporters are dumb but for this piece of business lads, i agree and support. you should too. for 2 friggin years extension only!

Comment #88Eastander – shola not an impact player? Did you miss Wigan at home last season? 2-0 down with 15 min’s left.. enter shola – scores one sets’ up the second. Last season in the crucial nott’s forrest game – game stretched, niggly nae quality – cue shola 20 min’s left – scores one (blinder) and sets up Jose with a back heel..

Comment #89Matt never sais he was another Shearer but who is. I may have on occasion descibed him as having the first touch of a repellamt =magnet. But he does deserve his contract in my opinion and that does not make me an a hole which is how u chose to describe me. This is why your an internet warrior chump. In real life u would choose your words more carefully

spot on. Shola may never have really fulfilled his early potential but he is clearly a difficult striker to play against and gives us options. In the modern game he is a valuable squad member and he’s apparently a gent to boot, which nowadays is nice to see among prem players.

Comment #94Why is anyone moaning anyway? Does anyone actually think he’ll be on more than 20k a week?
It’s not like he’s a drain on the clubs resources. He’s just the old family donkey, who can’t carry much anymore, but it’s nice to have him around.
For me it’ll be a sad day if Shola ever turns out in another teams colours.

Comment #95@Ross – We got Ba!
I see your point though, Im trying to take the length of time as a positive that the club are finding the right man for the job.
That might be blind faith though haha.
Either way we will have a new striker before the end of the window like, no doubt about it.

Comment #103Did you lads know that a ‘Free Transfer’ means that we have to pay a signing on fee equivalent to atleast 75% of the players’ current market value.
So:
Ba – Value £8m – We paid IRO £6m
Marveaux – Value £7.5m – We paid IRO £5.7m
£6m (Ba) + £5.7m (Marv) + £4.5m (Cab) + £4m (Oba) = £20.2m nett spent
£4.5m (Nolan) + £2m (Rout) = £6.5m received
Total Spent (Transfer Fees alone) = £13.7m
I havn’t included Abied coz Im not sure what terms he came in on.

Comment #104@91- Agreed, I do think were after a striker but probably want Ranger off the books first, seems to be our current practice judging by Pardew’s recent comments.
“I contacted Sir Alex (Ferguson) about him early at the start of the summer to see if there was an opportunity to bring him to Newcastle, but it wasn’t until Wayne Routledge joined Swansea City that we were able to bring him in.” (In reference to Obertan)

Comment #105@ 101 – the signing on fee is usually at most 15-20% of the players market value which includes 10% for the agent and 10% for the player or his family. I think thats the case. 75% seems rather high to me…

Comment #106if we sign a decent striker i wont mind this news so much i suppose, then he’ll have a smaller chance of getting a game, i just don’t understand the logic behind giving him a new contract, he is terrible and no one can deny that, i focused on him during several games last season and he done absolutely nothing, such an annoying player. anyway my rant’s over, sorry for upsetting tequila, lets just be optimistic about it and hope we get another striker in soon

Comment #109Just a point to the negs here Shola’s the one going round the club in the build up the mackem game geeing everyone up and making sure they’re aware just how important the game is + he always bloody scores against them!! Our dressing room is all the better for having him in it……sometimes people forget just what the guy has done for us.
Best penalty taker in the world. Hail King Shola

Comment #111From Talk Sport EPL Predictions:
NEWCASTLE UNITED
PARD LUCK FOR LOW-SPENDING TOON
Strengths
Going on the display against Arsenal where the team fought back from 4-0 down at half-time to salvage a draw, the Newcastle squad have a sense of togetherness that isn’t always evident when the focus tends to be on disgruntlement at the club. In fact, midfielder Joey Barton has repeatedly expressed a desire to stay in the north east despite being made available for transfer. Add to that the Newcastle faithful and St James’ Park represents a club with real heart and soul, capable of so much more than has been achieved on the pitch in recent seasons.
Weaknesses
Having sold key players like Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan and spent virtually nothing since, Newcastle don’t appear to be a club intent on moving forward – at least not at a cost – and the blame is laid squarely at the door of owner Mike Ashley. The uncertain futures of Jose Enrique and Joey Barton have not helped manager Alan Pardew prepare for the Premier League season and the feeling remains that Newcastle are a big club with small ambitions.
One to watch
On his full debut in September 2010, then 23-year-old Hatem Ben Arfa scored an absolute screamer against Everton after signing on loan. In October, however, he broke his leg ending his season and leaving Toon fans to dwell on the early promise shown. In January the Frenchman signed for the Magpies permanently and despite an injury setback in pre-season, is raring to go. Hopefully Alan ‘We don’t really know much about French international and Champions League player Hatem Ben Arfa’ Shearer will be a bit more clued up on Newcastle’s talented forward this season.
Key man
Free transfer Demba Ba had a brilliant spell at West Ham between January and May, scoring seven goals in 10 league starts. Toon fans should be happy with this because, while the team scored just 15 goals away from home last season (the joint lowest with Stoke), five of Ba’s came on the road for the Hammers.
Big signing
The club spent £4.3m bringing Yohan Cabaye to St James’ Park from Lille. He was part of the side that won the league and cup double in France. Technically excellent, during last season’s Ligue 1 success he popped up with nine assists and two goals.
Fact
There were more goals at St James’ Park than at any other league ground during the 2010/11 campaign.
Odds
3000/1 (Ladbrokes).
Prediction
15th place.

Comment #117good 2 see the makem mauler get an extension. Deserves it after the great service hes given the club. Granted he isn’t the best striker the world has ever seen, but he is nowhere near as bad as half the people on blog’s make out. People seem to make a mountain out of a mole hill in regard to his faults. Always good to see local lads like Saylor in the team aswell.

Why do you think players hold out for a free transfer, not coz they want to stay for the extra yearm, but coz they get to pocket a HUGE sum of money.
