Jose Enrique is expected to complete his move to Liverpool tomorrow, Friday, when he will sign a four-year contract.
Jose Enrique getting his medical and not looking happy
The Spanish left-back has been itching for a move away from Newcastle ever since Andy Carroll was sold to Liverpool, and it now turns out that Jose will be joining his former colleague at The Reds.
Jose refused a new contract at Newcastle, because he didn’t think owner Mike Ashley was ambitious enough for the Tyneside club.
And that lack of ambition has even been borne out this summer, with Newcastle up around £5M in transfer deals this summer after the Enrique deal, even though the club said they would fully invest the £35M Carroll fee back into the club.
That’s not going to happen, and anybody who says they have done that is hardly being realistic.
The news is that Jose has moved for around £6M, and he was given permission to speak to Liverpool on Thursday, after a fee was agreed between the two clubs, and he travelled to Merseyside for his medical.
This is what Jose said on Thursday:
“I have rejected good offers from other leagues to stay in England. The style of football is perfect for me and I want to improve myself as a player.”
“I always wanted to go to Liverpool and they were always my first choice. One of my ambitions is to play regularly for Spain and it’s more realistic for me to fight for a place with Liverpool rather than Newcastle.”
Enrique will earn about £65K/week a week at The Reds, which is about £20K/week more than what he was getting on Tyneside.
With young Shane Ferguson injured and James Tavernier being loaned out to Carlisle United on Thursday, Newcastle now find themselves without a recognized left back for their home game against Arsenal on Saturday evening.
And Jose is now the third top player to elect to leave Newcastle this year, following Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan out of the door.
