The move that has been talked about for months, now seems finally ready to go through, as there is news from Merseyside sources that Jose Enrique is on his way to Liverpool to have his medical.
Jose Enrique – on his way to Liverpool
And if the news is to be believed Newcastle will get £5.5M from Liverpool, for another top Newcastle player to join the Merseyside club within the last eight months, after Andy Carroll joined them for £35M in January.
With Carroll, Nolan and Enrique leaving Newcastle this year, and Barton seemingly on his way too, when was the last time Newcastle lost four of their very best players in just eight months, and that includes their captain?
If Newcastle are savvy enough, they will quickly try to bring in a replacement for Enrique, like Dutchman Erik Pieters, but come to think of it who will now play left back on Saturday against Arsenal – I’ll take a look for by boots again.
And the Evening Chronicle is saying that Jose is expected to sign for Liverpool today, after the fee had been agreed between the two clubs.
Enrique didn’t want to stay at Newcastle, because he doesn’t think the club is ambitious enough, and that doubt started after Newcastle sold Andy Carroll in January.
The Spaniard wants to play in the European Champions League, and become a full Spanish International, and he will have a much better chance of achieving those aims at Liverpool, who are still a very ambitious club, backed by big money from America.
So if Joey Barton moves, there is an argument to be made that Newcastle have lost Barton, Enrique and Nolan because they sold Andy Carroll in January, so was the £35M they got from Liverpool for Andy worth it?
That’s especially a good question when the Enrique deal means Newcastle are now £4.5M to the good in the transfer market this summer, and there’s just no way they will get anywhere near to spending that £35M, which is what we were told would happen last February.
It seems to us that Kevin Keegan was close to being accurate, when he said a few months ago that Mike Ashley wouldn’t spend any of that £35M the club got for Carroll, and at the time we thought his comment sounded absolutely ridiculous.
Newcastle should now move very quickly to bring in some new players, because this move by Enrique, even though it has been expected for months, will not be well received by Newcastle fans, as our very best players seem to be seeking pastures anew.
