Newcastle have been linked with Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok, since he played in the European Championships back in the summer of 2008.
Eren Derdiyok – Newcastle interested back in 2008
That was when Kevin Keegan was still the Newcastle manager, and Derdivok was still at FC Basel, and Newcastle were reported to be after the then 19 year-old, who was rated at around £3M.
And Derdivok looked useful against England in the 2-2 draw in June in that European Championships qualifier, and reports today are linking Newcastle with a new move for the 22 year-old 6’3″ striker, who is now at Bayer Leverkusen.
Here’s a report I wrote on August 2nd, 2008 and I seem to be keen on the youngster – that’s a surprise!
😀
It seems that Chief Scout Graham Carr has watched the striker play for Switzerland against Liechenstein, and the youngster scored the first goal after just 15 minutes.
And it’s hardly surprising that Carr has been watching him play for Bayer Leverkusen, as another potential Newcastle target, Tranquillo Barnetta also plays at the same German club.
Alan Pardew is now desperately searching the continent for another striker, as moves for Gameiro and Erdinc were not successful, and Tottenham strikers Crouch, Defoe and Pavyluchenko are too old and way over-priced.
But the Swiss striker is now worth an estimated at £8.5M, which seems a bit high for somebody who is not proven at the top level, but he does fit the Newcastle profile of younger players who can improve, and has been on the Newcastle radar screen for at least three years.
The youngster played 63 times for FC Basel with 17 goals, and has played 65 times for Bayer Leverkusen with 18 goals, and he has played 33 times for Switzerland with 3 goals.
He would be a decent buy for Newcastle, but would still be a bit of a risk.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Barnetta and him – youre right. Get Pieters and then Barnetta (When Barton Leaves) and then DirDeyok… Nice window in deed… and with Nasri and Fab not playing – I can see a win!!! 🙂

Comment #3If we can get him and a decent LB with the others we have bought it will have been a decent transfer window. Get rid of Barton & Enrique. All the press are predicting that we will struggle this season and 1 or 2 are saying we’ll go down. I don’t think so think we’ll finish around 10th

Have they? We must have touched base then, I think he’d jump to join Toon, and he would be a very good signing in our team

Comment #21People keep saying we should buy Sturridge like you just go into a shop! It seems to me that he’s not desperate to leave Chelsea and that they are keen to keep him, especially after his pre-season goals. They could well slap a £20 million plus fee on him – that’s IF he chose to leave. So I just can’t see how this could happen. Best hope would be a loan deal – but my first 2 points still apply.

Comment #23Remember he’s only 22, strikers tend to start proper flourishing at his age in the upcoming season.
I reckon he could pump in a good few goals tbh. He’s still getting better.

Comment #37Guys, remember that with the scouts looking at them they are not JUST looking at their goal scoring record…
Effectively, until last season Gervinho and Gameiro wouldn’t have been seen as great goal scorers.
We’re clearly looking at players with high work rate and flexibility, (Erding, Gameiro, Gervinho ALL Right Attacking Midfield/Right sided strikers.)
This is why the Sturridge type players will be looked at by the club I think.
We have Shola and Ba and Best that are decent in the air, we need more ball playing teams so we’re not playing hoof ball come the start of the season.
If he’s being looked at, he’ll fit the bill for the new Carr/Pardew plan.

Exactly, for a striker, especially his age, still learning his trade, they are looking more at his skills than his history.

Comment #40I hope we have a new striker for the Fulham match. Im coming all the way from Sydney Australia to see it….
There are some real positives in the signings we have made, pace is the real key. I know some are unhappy with those that have been sold or will be booted but Nolan was just way too slow for my liking and Joey albeit ok last season has not got the overall game awareness and control that I believe Cabaye/Arfa will provide.
