The Daily Mirror is reporting that Newcastle may be interested in Israeli winger Yossi Benayoun.
Yossi Benayoun – while at Liverpool
With Joey Barton likely to be leaving Newcastle maybe for Stoke City, if the Potters can meet Joey’s huge wages, then Newcastle will very likely bring in a replacement.
And while Benayoun would have been a great signing for Newcastle a few years ago, he seems a little old now at 31.
Of course Alan Pardew knows all about Yossi, since he signed him when he was manager at West Ham, and while Yossi is still a very good player who could do well on Tyneside, we’d still be a little surprised if Newcastle do this deal, simply because of Yossi’s age.
But the player seems surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge now, and the London club want to use him in a player exchange with Tottenham, in their efforts to get former Newcastle target, Luka Modric.
And the news is that the Israeli has told his friends he must now decide between Newcastle and Tottenham.
Benayoun moved to Chelsea from Liverpool only last year in a £5.5M deal, but had a bad time of it last season with a serious Achilles tendon injury, from which he has now recovered.
It really seems to depend on whether Tottenham want Yossi plus cash for Luka Modric, and if they refuse the deal, Newcastle could be in with a good chance, assuming this story is true.
Newcastle would not want to pay too much for Benayoun – what’s new? – and they would want to get a deal for around £2M to £3M, and wages could also be a stumbling block.
We’d be surprised if this deal goes through at Newcastle.
