It seems that Newcastle are not going to be caught short-handed again, as they were when they sold Andy Carroll to Liverpool on the last day of the January transfer window, and didn’t have time to bring in a replacement.
Erik Pieters – would be great buy for Newcastle
The news today is that Newcastle will make a move for the impressive Holland defender Erik Pieters, and that will be independent of whether Jose Enrique has left the club, when they hopefully sign the 23 year-old – shortly.
There has been news the last few days that Enrique will not sign his new contract at Newcastle, and with Liverpool probably waiting to come in for Jose late in August, to get a better deal, Newcastle will move now for their left-back cover.
Erik Pieters is a close friend of Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul, and no doubt Tim will have talked in lyrical terms about Newcastle to his Dutch colleague, and Tim’s been on Tyneside since he was 17 of course and loves the place.
And as we had talked about a few days ago Newcastle would be willing to have both Pieters and Enrique at Newcastle, if Jose does not move by September 1st.
Pieters can play anywhere across the back four, and presumably could also play at right back, if Jose stays on Tyneside, and of course the signing could even persuade Jose to stay at Newcastle, but that’s a long shot at this point.
We think Pieters would be an excellent signing by Newcastle, and we would hope the deal happens sooner rather than later.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Yeah news today is that we are puching this one.
Like Ed says, this lad is versatile, and that is something you need in a player these days.

Comment #5Hope he will be a decent solid left back. No way will i expect him to do a Enrique who is easily 1 of the finest left backs on the planet. As long as Pieters is solid and reliable on the back i’m more than happy.

Comment #9Good morning everyone. Ichristo said this morning on another story that this deal was done. Do you have a source for this mate? It’d be fab if we bought this lad imo.
Also another fan said he seen Bendtner in a club and that NUFC had approached AFC though worryingly his post was around 3am – Not good if that’s the time he seen Nicklas as surely he should be trying to keep fit!!!!
Can’t believe Enrique mind – ONE good Premier League season and one good Coke League season and he thinks he’s a world-beater!

Comment #12Wouldnt it be funny if we signed Pieters, nobody came in for Enrique and he couldnt get a game, would serve him right!

Comment #14@Neil – I think this deal will be done tomorrow. I dont think enrique will be playing vs arsenal so we need to have him in. I honestly believe this was done last weekend and formalities as in medical to be done before or after the weekend. I think before.

Comment #15Cabaye Tiote Barton in a midfield trio will be so good to watch, all can pass, tackle, run with the ball, work hard for the team… I think we’ll be playing a 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation this season, similar to Chelsea of a 5 years ago when they had Robben and Duff on the wings, except we’ll have Guti/Marveaux/Obertan/Ben Arfa and then Vuckic and Gosling to deputise whenever Tiote gets suspended

Comment #17Pieters is first choice left back for the 2nd best international side in the world. This would suggest he is no mug.
Obviously will need some time to adfapt to english football but dutch platers do seem to adapt quicker than spanish / latin american.
Fingers crossed this gets over the line quickly

Comment #18bring him in and we have more competition for defence, which is good. He can challenge jose and simmo as well. Bring him and another striker and transfer window will be succesful.

Comment #19Eastender – A few councils have come out and said that, which is a good move. There is also an e-petition to stop benefits of any rioters. If it gets to 100k signatures then parliament will discuss it. Last time I checked it had 94k so it was close.

Comment #26Man Citeh are a total joke imo like. How are they gonna fit all of these stars into one team ffs?? They are finalising a deal for Nasri yet have Silva, Milner, Johnson, Barry, de J*ng, Toure, Balotelli, Dzeko, Aguero, Tevez, Adebayor, Bellamy, Santa Cruz all to fit into 6 spaces. There’s some big names who are not gonna be happy there!

Comment #27More competition in defence will always be a good thing. I really don’t know why we’re waiting for Jose to finalise his deal to Liverpool.
Really don’t have a good feeling about Bendtner, I’ve never rated him, Odemwingie would be a far better signing!

Comment #33@26 – If we wait a wee little while longer there may be some sassy loans available from eastlands or cheap deals… look at Milner – talk about going down hill as a player since joining them – the worst spirit in the league. How they went down to Utd was so easy…
