Newcastle Move For Pieters Independent Of Enrique Status

9:56 am, Thursday, August 11th, 2011 by Ed Harrison · 51 Comments

It seems that Newcastle are not going to be caught short-handed again, as they were when they sold Andy Carroll to Liverpool on the last day of the January transfer window, and didn’t have time to bring in a replacement.

Erik Pieters - would be great buy for Newcastle

The news today is that Newcastle will make a move for the impressive Holland defender Erik Pieters, and that will be independent of whether Jose Enrique has left the club, when they hopefully sign the 23 year-old – shortly.

There has been news the last few days that Enrique will not sign his new contract at Newcastle, and with Liverpool probably waiting to come in for Jose late in August, to get a better deal, Newcastle will move now for their left-back cover.

Erik Pieters is a close friend of Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul, and no doubt Tim will have talked in lyrical terms about Newcastle to his Dutch colleague, and Tim’s  been on Tyneside since he was 17 of course and loves the place.

And as we had talked about a few days ago Newcastle would be willing to have both Pieters and Enrique at Newcastle,  if Jose does not move by September 1st.

Pieters can play anywhere across the back four, and presumably could also play at right back, if Jose stays on Tyneside, and of course the signing could even persuade Jose to stay at Newcastle, but that’s a long shot at this point.

We think Pieters would be an excellent signing by Newcastle, and we would hope the deal happens sooner rather than later.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Yeah news today is that we are puching this one.

Like Ed says, this lad is versatile, and that is something you need in a player these days.

Just to let all of you know the trialist who was at Newcastle and played against boro reserves has not been handed a deal

  • 3 NUFC_Richyg01 // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:06 AM

Good words from Cabaye on Sky Sports

  • 4 NUFC_Richyg01 // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:08 AM

ESPN want two toon fans for interview at 1pm Today. You must have been to the 4-4 draw with Arsenal last season.

  • 5 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:08 AM

Hope he will be a decent solid left back. No way will i expect him to do a Enrique who is easily 1 of the finest left backs on the planet. As long as Pieters is solid and reliable on the back i’m more than happy.

  • 6 Eastander // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:10 AM

i have to say Barton sounds very confident he’s going to play for newcastle… he’s played 2 pre season friendly’s with the first team against darlington and leeds…

    Jonas Cabaye Tiote Marveaux

    With;
    Obertan
    Gosling
    Vuckic

All of whom I would say right now are infront of him…

  • 7 BiffBaffBoff // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:11 AM

How do you know indian magpie? He is a striker and he scored, I would have thought that would have been enough considering he came off the bench too!

Good morning everyone. Ichristo said this morning on another story that this deal was done. Do you have a source for this mate? It’d be fab if we bought this lad imo.

Also another fan said he seen Bendtner in a club and that NUFC had approached AFC though worryingly his post was around 3am – Not good if that’s the time he seen Nicklas as surely he should be trying to keep fit!!!!

Can’t believe Enrique mind – ONE good Premier League season and one good Coke League season and he thinks he’s a world-beater!

  • 10 mjmark1970 // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:12 AM

Whats the club waiting for? Jose isn’t willing to sign a new deal and wants out of the club,I will be disappointed if he joins Liverpool myself as they will not make the champions lge this season!! Hopefully Arsenal will decide to give him a go

  • 11 ichrisho // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:12 AM

@3 – Just read it. I like what he says. We should all think that. I honestly think we have new star of the league in Cabaye. Delighted he is happy here.

  • 12 Eastander // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:14 AM

Wouldnt it be funny if we signed Pieters, nobody came in for Enrique and he couldnt get a game, would serve him right!

On a totally different note, Nottingham Council have warned tenants involved in the riots they may lose their houses haha, class!

  • 13 Neil // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:14 AM

*ichrisho – Sorry on my typo m8!

  • 14 ichrisho // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:15 AM

@Neil – I think this deal will be done tomorrow. I dont think enrique will be playing vs arsenal so we need to have him in. I honestly believe this was done last weekend and formalities as in medical to be done before or after the weekend. I think before.

  • 15 BiffBaffBoff // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:15 AM

Cabaye Tiote Barton in a midfield trio will be so good to watch, all can pass, tackle, run with the ball, work hard for the team… I think we’ll be playing a 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation this season, similar to Chelsea of a 5 years ago when they had Robben and Duff on the wings, except we’ll have Guti/Marveaux/Obertan/Ben Arfa and then Vuckic and Gosling to deputise whenever Tiote gets suspended

  • 16 ichrisho // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:15 AM

@Neil – I like it. ichristo.. sounds almost religious!! :)

  • 17 Selbymag // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:16 AM

Pieters is first choice left back for the 2nd best international side in the world. This would suggest he is no mug.
Obviously will need some time to adfapt to english football but dutch platers do seem to adapt quicker than spanish / latin american.
Fingers crossed this gets over the line quickly

  • 18 ToonZiga // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:16 AM

bring him in and we have more competition for defence, which is good. He can challenge jose and simmo as well. Bring him and another striker and transfer window will be succesful.

  • 19 BiffBaffBoff // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:16 AM

Eastender – A few councils have come out and said that, which is a good move. There is also an e-petition to stop benefits of any rioters. If it gets to 100k signatures then parliament will discuss it. Last time I checked it had 94k so it was close.

  • 20 ichrisho // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:18 AM

    Best team?

    KRUL
    SIMO COLLO SAYLOR PIETERS

    CABAYE TIOTE BARTON

    HBA MARVEAUX
    SHEARER (oh no wait.. BA)

  • 21 Neil // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:18 AM

BiffBaffBoff – Do you have a link for that petition please? I know a few who’d definitely sign that including me or should I say moi with our new look team!

  • 22 BiffBaffBoff // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:20 AM

All of you in the UK – Sign this, needs 3k more to get discussed in parliament.

Fair enough you beat me to it!

  • 25 Trini Toon // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:22 AM

have to say, if we get Pieters, I will be pleased. not sure if we will be able to bring in another striker in time… we will beat Arsenal on the weekend… can’t wait!

  • 26 Neil // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:22 AM

Man Citeh are a total joke imo like. How are they gonna fit all of these stars into one team ffs?? They are finalising a deal for Nasri yet have Silva, Milner, Johnson, Barry, de J*ng, Toure, Balotelli, Dzeko, Aguero, Tevez, Adebayor, Bellamy, Santa Cruz all to fit into 6 spaces. There’s some big names who are not gonna be happy there!

  • 27 JimmyToonToon // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:25 AM

More competition in defence will always be a good thing. I really don’t know why we’re waiting for Jose to finalise his deal to Liverpool.

Really don’t have a good feeling about Bendtner, I’ve never rated him, Odemwingie would be a far better signing!

  • 28 NUFC_Richyg01 // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:27 AM

    @26

Not only that, but there are gonna be some big names drop out of their 25 man squad.

  • 29 NUFC_Richyg01 // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:30 AM

    @27

We were issued a ‘Hands Off’ warning from WBA for him according to the Sun

  • 30 Mags // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:32 AM

Our new left back should be in place before we even consider letting Enrique go to the bindippers. We have gone 3 years with no cover. Shameful.

Why no stiker? The club have had 7 months to find an AC replacement. Disgraceful.

  • 31 Neil // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:32 AM

Is it just me or is the site crashing to sign the epetition?

  • 32 thai-mag // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:33 AM

enrique at training ground now saying his goodbyes on way to liverpool

  • 33 ichrisho // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:33 AM

@26 – If we wait a wee little while longer there may be some sassy loans available from eastlands or cheap deals… look at Milner – talk about going down hill as a player since joining them – the worst spirit in the league. How they went down to Utd was so easy…

  • 34 JimmyToonToon // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:34 AM

Well I suppose it’s not like we will attract him with a big money move to lure him away. Still think Bendtner would be a massive mistake, so may other players we could per chaise instead of him like

  • 35 NUFC_Richyg01 // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:34 AM

    @22

Can’t do the petition mate, keeps timing out.

  • 36 sirtoongospel // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:35 AM

Is that a defo Thai-mag? Would have thought we would keep Enrique for the Arsenal game and do the deals early next week so we aren’t short. Unless our replacement signs today ot tomorrow morning.

  • 37 JimmyToonToon // Aug 11, 2011 at 10:35 AM

Yeh it’s crashing, to many people trying to sign that petition!

  • 41 richard // Aug 11, 2011 at 11:11 AM

think pardew may go for 3 at the back with 2 wing backs maybe gosling and jonas. pieters can play center. back as well apparently, do we still get cover left back in as well as striker

  • 42 toon-crazy // Aug 11, 2011 at 11:21 AM

get him in please… and @ everyone , who do u think will be the new striker if we get one ???

  • 43 geoff777 // Aug 11, 2011 at 11:57 AM

    Rubbish story.

    Enrique’s already in Liverpool.

More spin by the club to make it look like they were planning ahead.

Why do they constantly lie to the fans?

  • 44 SincerelySamuel // Aug 11, 2011 at 12:02 PM

i think its now between Bendtner and Derdiyok whoever agrees the cheapest contract considering theyre the same age and price id guess ashley will lowball both and see who bites ..id be well chuffed with either + from what i have seen cabaye is a gem and a steal at £4.8mil kinda like Arteta but not a nob

Been trying to sign the epetition regarding stopping rioters benefits. Page down. I suggest blog readers email their MP’s regarding this as it appears the web site can’t cope with the number of hits.

PSV do nnot want to sell Pieters :( what a cock up our bumbling board are

  • 49 terencelim // Aug 11, 2011 at 3:39 PM

    @43,
Because many fans here enjoy being lied and live in their dream world, and they don’t seem to wake up, though they should have learnt the lesson when we relegated years ago.

  • 50 RobertLeeNo.7 // Aug 11, 2011 at 3:41 PM

“It’s resolved. I made one thing clear – he cannot leave. The same is true for Pieters.”

words from the PSV coach on Bruma and Pieters
