PSV’s Erik Pieters has today talked about a potential move to Newcastle United, but don’t believe all the headlines you read, he has not dismissed the move out of hand at all.
Erik Pieters – in mourning for his grandmother
Pieters is currently the Netherlands first-choice left-back, and has been identified by Newcastle as the full back to replace Jose Enrique, who has got his wish of the last six months to leave Newcastle.
But last week Erik lost his grandmother, and was given compassionate leave by the Dutch side from the England game at Wembley on Wednesday evening, but of course that game was subsequently called off because of the riots ongoing in London.
Let’s see what Erik really said today, as he talked to AD Sportwereld:
“I am not focused on football right now, only my family counts.”
“Moreover, there must first be serious discussions with Newcastle and PSV must be willing to let me go.”
His words seem to back the Newcastle Journal report this morning, that Newcastle still need to overcome some financial difficulties, before they can even talk to the player about terms.
We think that may be referring to the transfer fee, and there are reports that at least two other clubs are already in for the player, and maybe Ashley will not enter into a bidding war for the player.
There were reports that Pieters has a release clause in his contract for £6M, but there is no way to tell whether that’s true or not.
But the Tyneside club still seem confident they can get the Dutch International on board before the Sunderland game next Saturday, although of course Erik has other and more important things on his mind right now, and that’s perfectly understandable.
