The Daily Mail is reporting today that PSV Eindhoven will allow their top Dutch International left-back, Erik Pieters, to join Newcastle United.
Erik Pieters – on his way to Newcastle
The Tyneside club identified Pieters as the man to replace the departed Jose Enrique, who officially signed on at Liverpool yesterday, and Newcastle seemed to have moved quickly to bring in their new target.
PSV manager Fred Rutten is allowing his star player to move only reluctantly, and he had this to say:
“I would lie in the road to stop him leaving but I fear I cannot block his transfer to Newcastle,”
“Pieters has developed into a first-team regular with PSV and is a member of the Holland squad.”
“It would be a shame if he left us, because I know what our team needs.”
‘He is a brilliant defender, but if it is right for him and the club from a financial point of view, I cannot say no.””
The deal is said to go through at £6M, so it’s almost the same fee Newcastle received for Jose Enrique, and we don’t think Newcastle will miss Jose much this season, but we shall see.
We assume there will be no hitches in getting the lad on Tyneside, and of course he is a big pal of goalkeeper Tim Krul, his Dutch International colleague.
However the Newcastle Journal is reporting today there are still some obstacles to overcome, and they are hoping to get the Dutch lad in before the Sunderland game, and Erik is said to be very very keen to join Newcastle.
They are reporting there are still some financial issues to solve before they are even able to talk to the player, so what they are we have no idea.
So the Daily Mail report is positive, but the Journal report is guarded that Newcastle can quickly pull off this deal.
Alan Pardew had said the club would move quickly to replace Enrique, and they seemed to have done exactly that, but it seems the deal will not be an easy one to pull off.
If Pieters can be signed, it will be a nice little boost for Newcastle fans.
